Those red lines on Machoke are stretch marks... Stretch marks are soft tissue (skin in this case), where the soft tissue expands too quickly (due to muscle growth, fat gain, pregnancy, etc…), and then tightens again after stretching out.
An example to visualize the concept of stretch marking; imagine blowing a balloon to a really large size, but before popping it, you let all the air out. The air filling up the balloon stretches the rubber, and if you observe the deflated balloon, it has ripples in it after trying to mimic its original shape prior to stretching out, which are essentially “stretch marks” resembling the scars in skin after pregnancy, weight loss, or rapid muscle growth.
In the case of Machoke; Machop, it’s pre-evolution, has small muscles. Machoke gains a lot of muscle quickly when it evolves (since evolution happens at an instant) which gives the Pokémon stretch marks as this muscle hypothetically grows at the time it levels up and evolves, and then by the time Machoke eventually evolves in a trade, the stretch marks heal and fade when it evolves into Machamp.
Another story all together, but the energy it takes to evolve probably is what heals the, now, Machamp’s scars. As it only heals once it evolves. Much like how Caterpie “evolves” into a cocoon Pokémon, Metapod, and then blossoms into a butterfly, Butterfree, but changes physically or molts said cocoon during evolution only in the same way a Pokémon could heal from its “design” injuries during evolution.

i can see how a plastic pokeball can get stuck over a baby's mouth and nose if the baby started trying to suck on it (bc that's what infants do with unfamiliar objects), but you'd think that someone would've gone "hey, maybe we shouldn't give this small hard plastic object to the baby because it could suffocate itself" before it actually happens. like, it's common damn sense. don't give babies choking hazards, and especially don't leave them alone with them.
also i looked it up and this even happened three times. first being the one referred to where the pokeball was in an unattended baby's playpen, second where a parent was there to stop their toddler from dying when it happened, and the third when someone had the genius idea of putting half a pokeball in a 4-month-old's crib

I think that sort of debunks the kangaskhan theory, because kangaskhan was one of the first pokemon created, it's index #2 in the files of red + blue. So it seems extremely likely to me that Kangaskhan and the Marowak evolution co-existed during development

Glitch pokemon evolving into normal pokemon doesn't mean anything. Glitch pokemon are the game reading different unrelated code as if they're pokemon, which is why the sprites, stats and movepools seem so random, but at the same time you notice a lot of recurring moves in the movepools, because some instructions and pieces of data are a lot more common in programming than others. The fact that there's a glitch pokemon that's very similar to Gengar but with access to Spore certainly does not mean Gengar was ever planned to have Spore. I'm not sure what rhyhorn has to do with anything either. I guess it does make sense that they could have made kanga as a marowak evolution, scrapped that and made kanga standalone, then scrapped the marowak evolution

30:50 the idea of normal animals existing in the pokemon universe is more of an early idea in the series that ended up being retconned. In gen 1 and 2 (especially gen 1) it is heavily implied that pokemon are a new discovery and turns out theyve existed for a long time. In gen 2 the idea of normal animals existing still exists, its just a tad more downplayed. Gen 3, in more ways then one, was considered a soft reboot of sorts for the setting, and by gen 3 its pretty much confirmed that animals dont exist in the pokemon world. The idea of animals existing in the pokemon world is also illustrated in the early seasons of the pokemon anime and trading cards. Again, it isnt till around gen 3 is it confirmed pokemon are the animals of this universe.

In Japanese Red/Green you trade Raichu for Electrode, but in Japanese Blue you trade away a Kadabra (which is a trade evolution.) In the US release of the game, they keep the Red/Green trade requirement, but use the Blue version text that reads "Your (Pokemon) went and evolved."

Yeah, I've always found the theory goofy because why in the WORLD would he be so playfully competitive if you KILLED HIS POKEMON? Also, i've played countless Romhacks of FireRed at this point because it's the most common base used for ROMhacks and many of these don't change the dialog. Maybe it's different in the originals, but at least in the remakes, he never asks if your Pokémon is dead or if you've ever lost a Pokémon. He says "Hey, what are you doing here? Your Pokémon don't look dead! I can make them faint at least!"
Your theory also would fit for the actual reason. I mean, at the end of the game, Oak admonishes him for not loving his Pokémon enough. I always thought that was kinda weird since other than saying "I picked the wrong one!" when he loses the first battle, he doesn't really SEEM to have any dialog implying he's mean to or doesn't love his Pokémon. If we assume he's ditching Pokémon because they aren't good enough to beat you, then that viewpoint makes more sense.

There's actually another connection between the Eeveelutions and the gen 2 legendary trio that probably solidified the theory for a good number of fans. Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon's normal abilities are Water Absorb, Volt Absorb, and Flash Fire respectively. In Gen 5 and 6, Suicune, Raikou, and Entei respectively had these same abilities as their Hidden Abilities in the game's code.
However, these Hidden Abilities were never made available for the legendary trio, and when the trio did gain access to Hidden Abilities in Gen 7 they were retconned to all have Inner Focus.
It really feels as if GameFreak often includes deeper lore implications only to snuff them out later, as they adamantly denied the Ditto/Mew connection a few years ago despite the enormous number of similarities between the two that are too many to be coincidental. The Gen 2 legendary trio having their hidden abilities retconned feels like another Ditto/Mew denial from the devs, given that.

A few theories that weren't on the iceberg but stood out to me:
Mossdeep Space Center rocket launches: In the Mossdeep Space Center in R/S/E, there's a scientist that states the number of successful launches they've had. Apparently, this is just the number of real-life weeks since you started the game. However, I heard a lot of rumors that these were actually counting the number of your victories against the Elite Four, and that once the number of launches got to 100, you could ride a rocket into space and fight Deoxys. Coincidentally, this is also pretty much the same concept behind the Delta Episode in OR/AS (just replace the rocket with Rayquaza), so I wonder if the developers were aware of this rumor like with the Mew truck thing.
Akala Island golf course: This one is mostly notable to me because it's a theory for the one of the newer games, which aren't quite as common. In Sun and Moon, there are multiple Golfer NPCs, and Kahili of the Elite Four is a golfer. There's also a golf course on Akala Island displayed on the in-game minimap and the official illustration, but you never get to go there. This, plus some unused content in the game files, has some people wondering if the golf course was planned to be an accessible area during development, but got scrapped for whatever reason.

Not sure if I missed them during the video, but here are two gems from Pokémon Stadium:
    1. If you use a Pokémon with a nickname (usually a variation of their name, i.e. AlAkAzAM, Pikachoo, etc.) they’ll appear with different sprites that differ from even their own shiny forms.
    2. Similar to the Yoshi one - there was a popular “Tips/Cheat Codes” magazine that stated that in Stadium 2, if you defeat the Gym Leaders + Elite Four/Champion using only Typhlosion and Lugia, you would then be able to battle + capture Mew.

This tidbit is probably Iceberg worthy if it wasn't common knowledge now (like Pikablu = Marill). I remember reading in an old gaming magazine under a "secrets/tips" like section where it explained in Victory Road in Gold/Silver there was a "silver" or a light colored Rhyhorn wandering in the area. I read this back then and booted up my Silver copy and spent an hour or so going all over Victory Road and saw nothing, just ordinary Rhyhorn.
Many years later, I would remember that article and thought how maybe what it was referring to was probably a shiny Rhyhorn the writer must've encountered during their playthrough. However, I have since then lost the magazine so I wasn't able to recall if it was referring to a Rhyhorn or Rhydon, because I know Rhydon's are light colored when shiny while Rhyhorns are reddish/copper colored. It could've also been in Crystal as Rhydon don't appear in G/S in Victory Road, but they do in Crystal.
Hazy memory aside, I do remember that article and how it was very most likely about a shiny Rhydon encounter and how the writers thought it was some scripted rare encounter like Raikou or Suicune. Little info like that, while incorrect, was just so fun back then.

I thought I remembered reading in a magazine as a kid that, in Crystal, you could only catch Suicune without a Master Ball if your character was a girl, and you could only catch Entei (or maybe Raikou?) if you were a boy. That obviously isn't true, but I remember believing it back in the day because I was playing as a boy and could never catch Suicune, despite catching the other legendaries, and I could've sworn I read that somewhere.

Quick correction for 26:18, the Pokemon listed were likely never meant for Gen 1 at all. MissingNo only turns into those Gen 2 Pokemon because Gen 2 reuses part of Gen 1's indexing format, and to save space, those MissingNo slots were replaced with actual Pokemon. Gen 1 however did actually cut a few Pokemon out which made it into early builds of Gen 2 (Including the Spaceworld demo), such as a line of electric tigers meant to be a counterpart to Rapidash and Seaking's lines, and a Vulpix pre-evolution. However, any cut Pokemon from Gen 1 that was transferred to Gen 2 also was unfortunately cut there. The farthest some of them ever got, that we know of at least, were early 1999 prototypes.
(EDIT): Back in 2019, Gen 1's original index, along with tons of other early assets dating back to 1990 were leaked by an anonymous collector, and given to a team of Pokemon archivists called Helix Chamber. (This collector may or may not have also been behind the gigaleak last year, which leaked tons of N64 and SNES assets.) Basically, we have a pretty good understanding of what was cut from Gen 1.

About the Cubone/Kangaskhan theory... There's many Pokemon who evolve into different Mons using alternative methods. Bellossom, Gallade, the Eevee line, Rhyperior, and Politoed for example, use different objects and stones to evolve, so why wouldn't the skull from the grieving baby Kangaskhan's mother influence it's evolution? Its mother's skull becomes a part of its identity, thus turning it into a Cubone, and further into a Marowak.
I dunno, this is mostly just speculation on top of already proven evolution criteria, but I wouldn't completely sweep it under the rug.

Another very obscure fact that could have its place in the bottom section of the iceberg concerns some trainers’ names in the French versions of gen 5 and 7 (mostly) games. It seems that a member of the localisation team is a big fan of the parodic soap opera « Le Coeur A Ses Raisons », and named NPCs after characters of said soap. The most blatant example is that rich family from Undella Town, featuring a Brenda, a Clifford, a Crystale and a Flatsy, which are all names you can find in the series.Crystale even quotes a line from her counterpart in thes games. Still in Gen 5, there’s a guy named Brett in the French version, whose trainer class is « Doctor », just like Brett Montgomery, the main character of « Le Coeur A Ses Raisons. A pair of swimmers named Crystale and Criquette can be found in Sun and Moon as well.

Two theories I'd like to address:
    - Gary's Raticate: I believe this Raticate did not die due to injuries but because someone at Gamefreak knew that rats have an insanely short lifespan, with some species barely averaging 1 year. Considering it already evolved into a raticate it must not have been a young pokemon to begin with. We don't really get a frame of reference for how much time passes between each event but I can imagine the trip to Lavender Town for a 10 year old while training an army of critters takes some time.
    - Machoke's red lines: I believe these are either veins (like the Timbur line also has) or simply stretch marks from bulking up so much after evolving from a Machop (which kind of has pencil arms compared to its evolutions). I guess those would somehow have healed when Machoke evolves again (he sprouts two new frigging arms, healing a stretch mark wouldn't be that much of a stretch, pun very much intended)

like he had a heart problem that needed remedying. I only point this out because the obvious reading of that line is that he used pokemon to fight in a war, but if we take what he said and put it in a new context, we can imagine another situation wherein only humans fought in some war, without pokmon.
another theory that came to mind while writing this out, what if humans using pokemon at all was a recent development? not like yesterday or two days ago, but like a thousand years?

It's worth noting that the "white hand" NPC shows up in the Pokemon Origins anime short when Red visits the Lavender Town pokemon center. What's even more interesting about it is that there actually IS a faint white hand resting on Red's shoulder as he responds to their comment. Easy enough to see if you're looking for it, but something most are likely to miss the first time around if they aren't aware it's there.

I'm around the same age as you, and I can remember VIVIDLY when pokémon blew up. I was in either 2nd or 3rd grade, and like the rest of my classmates I was smitten. My sister and I both were, she's only a year younger than me. I remember my mom taking us to this little hardware shop that also randomly sold pokémon cards (unrelated but beanie babies as well) and we'd each get a new package every other week. We started the initial first day of school after pokémon blew up with pokémon bookbags, lunch boxes, and thermoses. And then there was the first Christmas after pokémon blew up. It was literally the BEST. We got all sorts of pokémon related presents. I can still remember most of what we got in detail:
    - a complete pokedex book, which was a must have in a predominantly pre-internet era
    - pokémon apparel including long sleeve and short sleeve shirts, sweatpants, pajamas, hoodies/jackets and socks (I wish my mom would have saved those as much would likely still fit)
    - several packs of cards
    - gameboys with red and blue games
    - and both of our favorite, extra large and super soft plushes-Pikachu for her, Charmander for me.
It wasn't long after the popularity exploded that our elementary school official banned bringing the cards to school. The hype was so all-encompassing that teachers constantly struggled with trying to get us all to focus. It was that big. And it happened seemingly overnight. It's still so crazy to me even now how insanely fast it happened, and without any form of social media to help the hype spread. It was organic and wild and I giggle when I think about how it must have looked to all the teachers and staff. We all definitely snuck our cards in our pockets and brought them to school anyways, lol. Super young to be so sneaky 😂

Ah yes, the mother's skull turning Cubone into a different Pokemon is a completely ridiculous idea, but the logic that every single Cubone is somehow genetically predisposed to have a dead mother and wear her skull on its head totally makes sense, flawless logic

    • @kaih6560
      @kaih6560 3 года назад +7

      No it could make sense
      1) it wears it's mother's hat. If the head has no room fir growthit could be stunted. Yes the mothers head is bigger but worn the right way it can still sit tight. For examples of altering bone growtj see Weston a prices book. He had a section of a people who hat babies sleep on a board. Result was a slightly flatter back of the head or see mewing.
      2) the mother wears it in the bag ( not sure if the word is correct on a biological level) like a kangaroo would. I guess the mother will feed it. Maybe it even gets energy or nutrients from the connection. If the mother is dead this could alter the growth amd even stunt it. Maybe this is the reason why it wears the head/skull. Maybe this way it can at least get some nutrients. Furthermore maybe in the bones it gets different ones. More calcium and less other stuff, energy for instance. What mainly determines growth( at least for humans but I guess many mammals too) is how much protein you get during growth. So this little fella cannot hunt or anything and his mother will not be able to provide. Which means shorter im height. Licking and chewing those bones will npurish his bones nontheless. Which will certainly give a different body type.

1:38:58 Might be a stretch but FLAME type might be a reference to MOERU, which means Burning but also in the sense of Burning Passion or Enthusiasm, especially in the heroic sense. This MIGHT be one reason the fire/fighting type is popular with designers; it often implies the pokemon has a "heroic" personality. Especially contrasting with Dark type, which is straight up "Evil" in Japan.
IMHO a fun twist on this is Incineroar, who has aspects of fire, fighting, AND dark, since he represents a "heel" wrestler who isn't actually mean.

The full event is still implemented in the game and can be access through hacking, and Arceus can be caught within it. Even more crazy is if that same Arceus is transferred to the subsequent HGSS games and brought to the Ruins, you can trigger ANOTHER unused event which eventually leads to Arceus granting you a level 1 of one of his three children. It's probably on this iceberg because nobody really knows why they made these events inaccessible when they're so damn cool.

And once they die, their skull becomes a Cubone mask once again. You could say each Cubone skull has its own maternal lineage, while male male Marowak skulls go abandoned.
