- I headed off to a new area of North Canterbury, New Zealand, to explore it and see if there are any fossils to be found.
It started off really slowly in a Cretaceous area where I didn't find much, so I decided to move lower down the river to a Miocene era deposits where I managed to find a bit more.
There were 2 weird occurrences on the hunt, the first one was when some rocks got kicked off the top of the cliff onto me. I checked up top but couldn't see an animal that could have caused it. The second one was when I found a creepy doll, something large made a very strange noise in a bush I had just walked past - I can't make out what the noise was. It sounded like a very large crunch. Let me know if you have any theories!

When you first showed the petrified wood I thought it was just drift wood, but when taking a closer look you could tell it was petrified, great finds!
I honestly thought it was actual wood, it is so well preserved and definitely petrified 😄
That was a neat video. I actually jumped when the debris cut loose from the over hang. That was strange. But not nearly so much as the grassy zip! It puzzled me as well. Can't wait for the next. Have a great week ahead!

Yeah, when the stones fell, almost thought it was Orson Welles, then the grassy tree dweller, was hoping you'd make it to the car before the sunset! Great finds!

Love the bone with the barnicals on it. Careful of disturbing teddy bear corpses. Their ghosts are notorious for haunting poor unsuspecting fossil hunters😁

The petrified wood is a fantastic example, are the shells florescent under different lights (to show their pattern). Hard walk in 20-30 degree temps!

15:18 Neverita, or "shark eye"/ "Moon snail" is something that looks similar to your fossilized find there.

Lucky a black fantail, very special! Even a spotty eel, the teddy is out the gate. Noises just nope nope run lol.

That was a nice, productive day! Beautiful piece of marine reptile bone, another chunk of whale bone, even a wonderful chunk of petrified wood. Oh and @7:45, that's some kind of animal burrow--I'm not familiar with New Zealand wildlife, but it looks about right size for a wolverine or badger. A bit large for a skunk or possum? At any rate, I even liked your slide-show of your subscribers' finds, some really nice fossils there. Fun day!

in southern Utah there is a famous area called Moab which is a huge sandstone desert area. there is an atv trail called Onion Creek which smells like a huge sulfur fart for miles because of the sulphur deposits lol. This reminded me of that.
Hahaha I've seen footage of the Moab, it looks really desolate and spooky!
Those rocks falling must have been caused by a marsupial chupacabra. XD

Beautiful country sir. I'm thinking that piece of whale bone with the barnacles was possibly dropped by another collector, perhaps they decided they still had a long way to go and could no longer bear the weight. Excellent video, I love seeing the countryside. Are there any snakes in NZ?
No snakes, and I don't think there would have been other collectors in that area - I was pretty far off the beaten path! 😊 I love that piece though!
I feel something is up with that place. Like as soon as you turned the teddy back to see the face the sound started to get louder. Its really wierd and the place looks creepy but cool content mr fossil hunter

Yeah, I watched this video again....i was hoping I would see a glance of whatever it was. I really wish it was a thylacyine, I want them to come back. they where or may be one of the most interesting creatures. I cant get over the stuffed gorilla in the middle of no where.
I wouldn't mind it being a thylacine, they were over in Tasmania but maybe a couple got washed over here 😁

LOL the rocks falling were most likely a small eq that you didn't feel cos of moving, the doll, is a kids stuffed duck pyjama pillow. My daughter had one when she was little. It's the beak that gave it away.. as for the creepy noises.. giant mouse hunting chicken? LOL

The first small rock fall could just have been "it's time". The creepy doll and tingle at the back of your neck--trust your instincts. My advice since you are out alone --get yourself a personal locator beacon.

Hi Rod! I'll check out sea snails from our region 😁 I ordered the paleobond directly from their site. Starbond also works well. I have a thick one and very thin one, the thick one is great for gluing bigger things.
I was expecting a twist where you'd get home in the car and that creepy stuffed animal would be in the back seat.

I really like your channel by the way, when you turned the doll, i think it was originally a teddy bear and the original owner of it was the one that made the noise, i think he or she was glad you found it since i think that a child was taken to that location and killed there, probably the killer dumped the doll close to the road when he was transporting the body and he may have either buried or concealed it under a brush or small tree, the child must have loved that doll so much and when you moved it, the emotion was too much and you heard the noise but then again that it may just be a fignewton of my imagination,
12:10 I think someone was observing you. First they looked over the edge of the escarpment and those stones rattled down, then they stood amongst the trees and walked on when you turned the stuffed animal over. Or it was a ghost. Whichever seems less creepy to you.

Some types of barnacles can attach while they are in there larval or plankton stage of life floating freely in the ocean some times you will see them on whales or turtles.
When you get a chance the 2 travel go to Canada to Alberta Mountain wonderful finds

Hey Mamlambo, that one looks a bit like a moon shell or sharkeye or mabe a small volute (its kind of pointy). Im no expert but i also like watching shell collectors n thats what the tip looks to me.
The shell you are talking about at around 15:10 looks like one of the species belonging to Neverita. I'm not a conchology expert, though.

Very interesting deposits........I prospect for fossils in Canada, Alberta. One area that we prospect has layers very similar to what you look to be in. The key indicator is a marine layer with ( anywhere from a foot thick to 20 feet or 6 meters thick) that is mostly comprised of marine soils with lots and lots of broken up shells. Above and below are layers that are terrestrial Dinosaur bearing anywhere from 75 million years old to 70 million years old........the conundrum is that within the marine layer we find lots and lots of Carnivorous Dinosaur teeth......but rarely do we find dinosaur bone? If I were to close my eyes the layers you are prospecting in appear almost identical. I suspect that some of the bone you may be finding is Dinosaur related.......marine bone here in Alberta is much more dense and darkly colored.......just wondering if you have had a similar experience?
For some reason, New Zealand has very little dinosaur bones. Only about 8 or so from memory. There are a few theories as to why that is, perhaps the forests were too acidic for example. Or perhaps it is because New Zealand has been underwater for the majority of time? So in short, we don't find dinosaur bones over here, all marine reptiles from my experience. Keep well!
Some very nice finds. How much weight were you carrying there? Didn't you save the petrified wood piece?
About 20kg (45lbs) I think, I usually carry more when I go looking for concretions! I did bring the wood back and put it outside to dry after washing it and forgot to bring it back in 😊 I'll have to do it in the wrap up next time!

Thinking of the split Plesiosaur bone fossil you found in this video; do you ever flatten/polish a section like that, to better show the crystalline structure in the fossil (so it shows up better in a photo or under a microscope)?

Could be what we commonly call a shark eye or a moon shell , it is difficult to say cause we can’t see the aperture 🤔 😎 👍

You do get fossil pearls as well, very rare though

@@MamlamboFossils OK the reason I suggest it is because I have an urchin much smaller but it has the same shape of lobes. I had it xrayed at my local vetinarys clinic and it clearly shows an urchin with side lobes. Good lucj with it and please let me know, Im as curious as youreslf

There is! The pearl material gets replaced by some kind of mineral like calcite.
These different layers of soil and rocks and shells match perfectly to the story of noah and the flood in the Bible
That's not an oyster it's around 50 million years. Old. And called a trilobite. I've found alot lately washed up on the beach.
Trilobites are a bit older than 50m, they are found in New Zealand but in one specific area.
