- One of the most common things I hear about the Mediterranean Diet is how expensive it is. So today, I’m going to see if I can make a Mediterranean meal for less money than a meal from Mcdonald’s.

Thanks for this video! I have a dear friend who prefers to eat lunch out rather than prepare her own at home. Me? I make my lunch every day. Why? Mainly because (let's be honest here) I'm too cheap to spend the extra money on eating out. Number 2, the food I prepare for myself at home is wholesome....I know what I'm putting into my body! I think a lot of people eat out for the convenience of it. Eating the way I do definitely takes planning (menu & grocery list) and some time (preparation). It's something to consider. I make my lunch because, to me, it's inconvenient to carry around the extra pounds I tend to tack on when I eat out and it's definitely inconvenient to my bank balance to spend the extra moolah for the "convenience" of eating out. I do enjoy eating out and from time to time, I do so without any guilt. I just do it sparingly. Sixteen pounds lost with more to go, I feel great and my checking account is also feeling great! When I heard the grand total of McDonald's Big Mac meal, I was shocked. Inflation has definitely hit hard there! Used to be, you could really eat "on the cheap" at McDonalds. I guess the long and short of it is where a person's priorities are and that's OK. We have that freedom to choose what works best for us.
Thanks for the comments. I have a hard time eating out these days not just because of spending the extra money, but also it is hard to find food at a restaurant that is as tasty as what I can make at home.
@@Mediterraneanliving Agreed and at least you know what's in the food you prepare at home. 😁
I've been doing the Mediterranean diet off and on since last summer and have lost 20 pounds..I stood up from my couch the other day and my pants fell to my knees..thank goodness I was at home..lol
That's funny! Congratulations on the weight loss.
Get a belt, no one wants to see that.
Great job though!
@@tilasole3252 I know right😀
Organic does not mean no pesticides, it just means no synthetic pesticides (in theory). They are still most likely spraying the crops, which is unfortunate. Also there is the Clean 15 and the Dirty Dozen that has the least and most crops sprayed with pesticides. The lists helps those on a budget decide if they truly need organic or can get away with regular produce and which ones to really stay away from.
The Big Mac and fries were already prepared for you (pun or no pun intended), where as you had to spend all that time cooking your own meal. Your meal is better for you of course. Some may say even taste better. But I've had three course meals in Catalan and it was, at the time from a few years ago, basically $10 or Euro I suppose. Came with an appetizer, a drink, a main course and a dessert.
I work at Trader Joe’s and it’s a great place for Mediterranean pantry staples and then obviously a good place for Whole Foods as well. The only thing about the produce is that it doesn’t last as long as some others. But honestly, it’s because it doesn’t have as many preservatives. Wash your produce well with water and a l it the vinegar, let it dry out completely and store it in the fridge sealed up and it will last a bit longer.
Your videos keep me focused on the med diet! No cheating on fast food!!! Thank you so much!
You are very welcome!
I love that spacially everything going over budget everywhere
What?! I can’t imagine a Trader Joe’s without wine!! That’s where we go for our wine!
I loved the way this was filmed and done! Wow. I am really inspired to try the Mediterranean diet. Thank you! :)
Four servings of pasta! Yum!
Just as a quick note: Organic Crops can absolutely use pesticides, they're just "naturally derived pesticides".
Unfortunately, these pesticides can often cause similar problems to folk who are sensitive to such things (in the form of gut dysbiosis and other issues).
Better than buying organic is buying farm direct from farms using sustainable, soil building practices, specifically those who are working with living soil. Living soil tends to invite a web of creatures that naturally keep food crops from being overrun by pests, significantly reducing the need for integrated pest management in the form of sprays.
Thank you for the comment!
I really love this video I hope you can make some more of these types soon❤️ thank you it really helps😊
Could you do a Mediterranean Diet On The Road? When you’re traveling, it’s tough for us to find the right stuff. We stay away from McDonalds except for a bathroom break and coffee/unsweetened tea.
I just want to say… organic does NOT mean pesticide free. Organic farming practices still use pesticides, often less effective, which results in much more fresh water usage and food waste. For foods which you’re not consuming the skin or which can be peeled using organic is even higher in total co2 to produce.
I think it’s great to have this image in our heads of some local guy with a little garden in his backyard but that is not the case.
A genuine question and not snark: How many meals can you get out of the $73 grocery bill? So it would be 7 Big Mac meals to how many Mediterranean organic meals?
Respect from France !!! I will do similar !!!
I just made the pasta after watching the video. Delicious!!! Better than any pasta I’ve had in a fancy Italian restaurant. I was easily able to cook the sauce in the time it took to boil the pasta. I will be making this many times in the future. Thank you!
You are welcome. One of my favorites as well!
Fantastic video! Basic cooking skills with real food will win every time. It doesn't have to involve difficult techniques to be healthy and delicious, as you demonstrated. Once you start, you have so many of the basics like olive oil, whole garlic, onions, etc.
LOL I love the jingle!!
That meal looks absolutely delicious.
Thanks for doing this comparison.
I would be interested in the amount of calorie comparison on this meal as well.
I realize the calories from the Mac Donald meal is a lot of saturated fat and empty calories. Not near the same nutritional value.
I made this tonight. It's very good. We really enjoyed it. Will make again. Thanks
And a comparison of the sodium content!
I just found you and find your content very helpful. Thank you for putting these videos together!
Glad you like them!
Love, love, love this relevant, informative, interesting video! Very helpful for me.
Thank you. Glad it was helpful.
I am so glad you actually made this one!!! I can't wait for the next one! Can you make a Facebook group?? I'd love to talk to like minded individuals that are following the real mediterranean diet!
We do have a number of scorebook groups including one that you can join without being part of one of our programs: facebook.com/groups/666534130486806
Like to know the calorie count on both of those!
I love right near a TJ and WF so want to replicate this!
Will be making this.thanks
You are welcome. Enjoy!
Just found your channel. Yay! SUBSCRIBED
Thank you!
A fair price comparison would have been a homemade burger and fries, but I see the point of showing the lifestyle choice and the prices. Your pasta and salad looked fab!!
Haha, you are awesome. I can't wait to make this!
Hope you enjoy it. It is one of our favorite meals.
What is your dijon vinaigrette dressing recipe? Love your videos!!!
looking forward to the next video! Hard to live on a single income these days with kids, and I have severe arthritis in a previously injured joint, so I was encouraged to switch to an antiinflammatory diet like this one.
Good for you! Keep at it! My arthritis has improved greatly eating the Mediterranean way! It may take some time, but hang in there. Also, move those joints as much as you can. I'm told movement is lubrication to those achy & pesky pains you feel.
It is more difficult with food prices increasing. I will do more budget videos with ideas to save money. Also, the Mediterranean Diet has been shown to be helpful for arthritis.
Interesting, thanks.
You're welcome
You know what would be helpful in these comparisons is the time factor. So how long does it take to gather the ingredients for the Mediterranean meal vs a drive to the drive thru. A lot of time we’ve got many of the ingredients for a meal already in house. So what’s the time difference between preparing what’s already on hand vs. getting in the car and going for fast food. Think that would really drive (no pun intended) the point home. Thanks for the video.
Good point. This meal can be made in the time it takes to cook the pasta. About 20 minutes.
@@Mediterraneanliving Cooking is something humans should be doing. I have colleagues who say they don't have time to cook yet they find time to sit and watch trashy tv, gossip on their phone for an hour and shop for trinkets online.
Preparing food and cooking is one of the fundamentals. It's good for the soul.
Interesting ❤
I made the pasta dish and it was fantastic!
We had this meal this past weekend (not McDonalds) it was so good! And simple to make! I loved this video.
Thank you!
Most excellent.
Thank you!
While the Mediterranean meal is overall less expensive than McDonald's, the initial cost of ingredients is way more expensive, $75 total vs $11. The "it's too expensive" argument is that initial outlay people just might not be able to do. Spending $75 to make a $4 meal? The $11 Big Mac is going to win. It's the Boots theory of socioeconomic unfairness, but in food form. I've been on both sides of that. Thankfully, I now buy healthy ingredients for a week instead of focusing on where the next meal, and how cheap I can get it, is coming from because all that matters is full belly. Any food is good food when you don't have anything.
I agree with you even though it is less in the long run. We are going to make a video on making a meal by purchasing only $11 worth of food. Thanks for the comment.
THATS incredible!! Thank you for this info.
You are welcome!
I love your channel! Thank you for having it.
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching!
I used to like "Fast Casual Food" like Chipotle, Noodles & Company, Panera, etc. because it felt healthier and better quality than fast food, while also in-between the fast food and restaurant price range. Nowadays, fast food and the places I mentioned cost as much if not more for an entree with a side and drink at a restaurant. So, I think the argument that the the med diet is too expensive isn't a fair point anymore in terms of when you even out the costs.
Maybe a dumb question and if so I apologize but in the Mediterranean lifestyle isn’t pasta cut out a lot? Or is whole wheat used more than regular? Appreciate your feedback and advice! Love the video!
Hi James, not a dumb question at all. Pasta is eaten regularly in many regions of the Mediterranean, especially in Italy. It is usually semolina pasta comparable to what most of us get in a regular supermarket. The difference is that less is eaten at a meal and it is eaten with large quantities of vegetables and extra virgin olive oil.
I've surely saved lots of money sense changing my diet. I have no regrets.
It really makes a big difference!
What happens if you cannot eat anything spicy or hot and allergic to peppers? Should I not do it then? I want to start, but I can't eat peppers or even be around them or like olives or anything like that
If you are allergic to peppers than you should either leave them out, find a substitution or just find recipes that don't have them. You definitely don't want to eat them if they cause you harm. As far as spicy or hot foods, the majority of Mediterranean cooking does not use hot peppers or lots of hot spices.
The olive oil in the dressing was easily $5 😅
Well there's also the cost of time and labor to consider.
So white wine is compatible with the Mediterranean diet? I assumed they only drink red wine.
They drink both and many of the health benefits of white wine are similar to red.
That Mediterranean food looks way better than McDonald’s low key
My son is vegetarian and I want to do the Mediterranean diet. Could you do a video on this please.
Yes! We will do it in the next few weeks.
Yummy 😋
Thanks! Recipes are in description.
Umm ... wouldn't it be more accurate to compare McDonald's to Olive Garden? Maybe matching calories? Or ... a homemade quarter pound hamburger on a bun and French fries from frozen vs the home-cooked Mediterranean meal?
No contest! The Mediterranean diet beats fast food in price, nutrients, satiety, health, energy output to say the least the only thing fast food does outperform the Mediterranean by is the fact that you have no washing up to do but then on the fast food diet you don't have the energy to do it anyway 😂
Well said!
An easy way to blow a lot of money is to eat out. Sure, it's nice every once in a blue moon .. but the meal William made seems quite tasty compared the that wee little Mac meal.
Would you compare your meals to the dollar menu, generally when i hear things about price they are comparing it to value/dollar menu items?
I think the biggest challenge with that is obviously the Mediterranean diet would then be more expensive, but the amount of food you get from the dollar menu (most aren't even called that now bc prices are over $1) is so small compared to the more filling portions of this diet.
We can do another one comparing to the $1 menu although I don't think there is much left of the $1 menu.
In the uk organic means only 10% chemicals spray not a 100% percent I had the argument with well know store. They are never organic here unless you grow your own very disappointing
❤❤❤
We don’t have Trader Joe here in Australia:-)
Aldi is probably your best best, if not, then try your local IGA. We have a few really good IGA's here in Geelong and they support local producers so customers can purchase items they won't find in Coles or Woolworths. In my opinion, IGA's delicatessens are unbeatable compared to all the other major supermarkets. Still though, i'd love a Trader Joe out here, they look amazing
Trader Joe and Aldi were born of the same company. I just find Trader Joe more consistent with product availability (they switch some things up, but others you can always count on finding. Not so Aldi). And more "fun" pre-prepared foods at TJ's, bur we're not here to talk about that! 😅
your pastas are not whole grains: high carb, high glycemic index, low nutrient density, low (zero) anti-oxydants
I am using the same pasta that is eaten in the Mediterranean, which is semolina. It has a medium glycemic index and includes protein. It is high in a lot of different nutrients. I wouldn't eat pasta by itself, but with lots of vegetables and some protein. And yes, pasta has antioxidants including manganese. It is true that whole grain has more, but still semolina pasta has plenty as well. I think the true difference is that in the Mediterranean they are eating large quantities of vegetables and olive oil with their meal and a small amount of pasta (generally, the Mediterranean is large and people have many different eating patterns).
I heared canned are unhealthy and some veg like spinach are real old when they get put on shelves 🤔😶
How do you compare the spirit of fast food with quality cooking in a kitchen? This video seems a bit disingenuous. I totally agree with the Mediterranean diet, but this is like comparing apples and axle grease
My goal was to show that eating a fast food meal which is often thought to be cheap was not cheaper. There are unhealthy meals you can cook at home for cheaper than this healthy Mediterranean meal, but there are also plenty of Mediterranean meals that can be cooked for less as well. We will cover those in the new year!
Looks like you could do 3 servings
I’m only one person, so all the food you bought at Trader Joe’s would go bad before I could eat it-so I’d be wasting money. While what you bought and made was healthier than eating McDonald’s, it isn’t cost-effective for one person.
Thanks for this video, I have a recommendation, post your daily routine food wise from breakfast to the last thing you eat
We are working on that one now.
😮👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💪💪👊👊💯.
It's a very distorted comparison. Now calculate the cost to your health. The difference is immeasurable. It baffles me why anyone eats that synthetic fast food. It's not even food, it's pollution.
And that will feed more than 1!
Holy crap $10.for Macdonald. Why would any one pay that.
It has really gone up!
paying for convenience. 🤷♀️
@@Mediterraneanliving I was SHOCKED!!! Obviously, I haven't been to "Micky D's" in a very long while.
How much was the extra virgin olive oil and where did you get it? $35!? You use a cup of that and a third is gone.
McDonald’s is so expensive now!
I couldn't believe how expensive they were!
Getting fat is expensive 🙉
your cheating but you buy bigger quantities to meet the dead line which is false hope for the people living on a budget trying to do the diet.
