Thanks for this video! I have a dear friend who prefers to eat lunch out rather than prepare her own at home. Me? I make my lunch every day. Why? Mainly because (let's be honest here) I'm too cheap to spend the extra money on eating out. Number 2, the food I prepare for myself at home is wholesome....I know what I'm putting into my body! I think a lot of people eat out for the convenience of it. Eating the way I do definitely takes planning (menu & grocery list) and some time (preparation). It's something to consider. I make my lunch because, to me, it's inconvenient to carry around the extra pounds I tend to tack on when I eat out and it's definitely inconvenient to my bank balance to spend the extra moolah for the "convenience" of eating out. I do enjoy eating out and from time to time, I do so without any guilt. I just do it sparingly. Sixteen pounds lost with more to go, I feel great and my checking account is also feeling great! When I heard the grand total of McDonald's Big Mac meal, I was shocked. Inflation has definitely hit hard there! Used to be, you could really eat "on the cheap" at McDonalds. I guess the long and short of it is where a person's priorities are and that's OK. We have that freedom to choose what works best for us.

Organic does not mean no pesticides, it just means no synthetic pesticides (in theory). They are still most likely spraying the crops, which is unfortunate. Also there is the Clean 15 and the Dirty Dozen that has the least and most crops sprayed with pesticides. The lists helps those on a budget decide if they truly need organic or can get away with regular produce and which ones to really stay away from.

The Big Mac and fries were already prepared for you (pun or no pun intended), where as you had to spend all that time cooking your own meal. Your meal is better for you of course. Some may say even taste better. But I've had three course meals in Catalan and it was, at the time from a few years ago, basically $10 or Euro I suppose. Came with an appetizer, a drink, a main course and a dessert.

I work at Trader Joe’s and it’s a great place for Mediterranean pantry staples and then obviously a good place for Whole Foods as well. The only thing about the produce is that it doesn’t last as long as some others. But honestly, it’s because it doesn’t have as many preservatives. Wash your produce well with water and a l it the vinegar, let it dry out completely and store it in the fridge sealed up and it will last a bit longer.

Just as a quick note: Organic Crops can absolutely use pesticides, they're just "naturally derived pesticides".
Unfortunately, these pesticides can often cause similar problems to folk who are sensitive to such things (in the form of gut dysbiosis and other issues).
Better than buying organic is buying farm direct from farms using sustainable, soil building practices, specifically those who are working with living soil. Living soil tends to invite a web of creatures that naturally keep food crops from being overrun by pests, significantly reducing the need for integrated pest management in the form of sprays.

I just want to say… organic does NOT mean pesticide free. Organic farming practices still use pesticides, often less effective, which results in much more fresh water usage and food waste. For foods which you’re not consuming the skin or which can be peeled using organic is even higher in total co2 to produce.
I think it’s great to have this image in our heads of some local guy with a little garden in his backyard but that is not the case.

You know what would be helpful in these comparisons is the time factor. So how long does it take to gather the ingredients for the Mediterranean meal vs a drive to the drive thru. A lot of time we’ve got many of the ingredients for a meal already in house. So what’s the time difference between preparing what’s already on hand vs. getting in the car and going for fast food. Think that would really drive (no pun intended) the point home. Thanks for the video.

While the Mediterranean meal is overall less expensive than McDonald's, the initial cost of ingredients is way more expensive, $75 total vs $11. The "it's too expensive" argument is that initial outlay people just might not be able to do. Spending $75 to make a $4 meal? The $11 Big Mac is going to win. It's the Boots theory of socioeconomic unfairness, but in food form. I've been on both sides of that. Thankfully, I now buy healthy ingredients for a week instead of focusing on where the next meal, and how cheap I can get it, is coming from because all that matters is full belly. Any food is good food when you don't have anything.

    • @Mediterraneanliving

I used to like "Fast Casual Food" like Chipotle, Noodles & Company, Panera, etc. because it felt healthier and better quality than fast food, while also in-between the fast food and restaurant price range. Nowadays, fast food and the places I mentioned cost as much if not more for an entree with a side and drink at a restaurant. So, I think the argument that the the med diet is too expensive isn't a fair point anymore in terms of when you even out the costs.

Hi James, not a dumb question at all. Pasta is eaten regularly in many regions of the Mediterranean, especially in Italy. It is usually semolina pasta comparable to what most of us get in a regular supermarket. The difference is that less is eaten at a meal and it is eaten with large quantities of vegetables and extra virgin olive oil.

If you are allergic to peppers than you should either leave them out, find a substitution or just find recipes that don't have them. The Mediterranean diet beats fast food in price, nutrients, satiety, health, energy output to say the least the only thing fast food does outperform the Mediterranean by is the fact that you have no washing up to do but then on the fast food diet you don't have the energy to do it anyway 😂

I am using the same pasta that is eaten in the Mediterranean, which is semolina. It has a medium glycemic index and includes protein. It is high in a lot of different nutrients. I wouldn't eat pasta by itself, but with lots of vegetables and some protein. And yes, pasta has antioxidants including manganese. It is true that whole grain has more, but still semolina pasta has plenty as well. I think the true difference is that in the Mediterranean they are eating large quantities of vegetables and olive oil with their meal and a small amount of pasta (generally, the Mediterranean is large and people have many different eating patterns).
