    *** IMPORTANT INFO FOR UK VIEWERS ***
    Recently I have been informed by a befriended UK bushcrafter that this method is illegal in the UK. This just shows how important it is that all of us do check the local laws before engaging in such fishing or hunting practises - in case you are a beginner, I just wish to share this info with you so you can conduct yourself accordingly. Feel free to practise the carving but please do abide to the local laws and do not fish with such hooks. Thank you.

      Einfach mal ausprobieren, der Gorge hook geht in zig Varianten. Das da ist halt meine.

    Great job ! First time i see a gorge hook that is teethed or has grooves like that, great idea ! I will see if i can fish with these in my area ... I would be surprised i could but would be a great feeling to catch a fish with a hand made wood hook!

    Duidelijk verklaard weer Ralf! heb je het wel eens met de doorn van een meidoorn geprobeerd? Schijnt ook erg goed te werken ;-)

    • @RathwulvenBushcraft
      @RathwulvenBushcraft  5 лет назад

      Hey, bedankt voor je commentaar.
      Gemaakt heb ik ze wel, de haakjes van meidoorn, maar ze zijn naar mijn mening geen goed alternatief, want: Enerzijds krijg je daar geen fatsoenlijke weerhaak bij in, anderszijds zijn ze in het algemeen best zwak. Zou voor een voorntje misschien nog wel kunnen werken, maar karpers krijg je daar niet mee uit. Bovendien is het - net als de Gorge hook - helaas een best brute en dieronvriendelijke manier van vissen, dus zo of zo zou die vis hierna z.s.m. moeten worden verdoofd en gedood; dus niks voor het sportvissen...

    I use the gouge quit often for catching eels here in New Zealand & also have a video on my change on useing them for catching eels.

      Thanks for your comment, Colin. Would you mind linking the video here? I am curious about this - back home in Franconia I used to do a lot of eel fishing, yet here in the Netherlands we can't really do this as far as eels are almost extinct here.
      Cheers,
      Ralf

    hey Ralf, would fatwood be okay to use in this manner? I would imagine the resin-impregnated wood would make for a more "durable" hook? Any thoughts?

    • @RathwulvenBushcraft
      @RathwulvenBushcraft  3 года назад +1

      Hey how's it going? Regarding your questions: I have not tried using fatwood for the simple reason that resin is quite hydrophobic (water-repellent). Non-resinous wood already tends to float if your chosen bait isn't heavy enough to drag the hook below the surface of the water, so the only way I see fatwood work is in combination with a decent sinker.
      Then again this is all hypothetical, nothing wrong to just give it a try to see how it works out. Actually gonna do that myself, so thanks for the inspiration. :)
      If you gave it a try, please feel free to share your experience here - would love to know how it went.

    how is it gonna stay under water? the hook is wooden, so it will float

    • @RathwulvenBushcraft
      @RathwulvenBushcraft  5 лет назад

      Hey there, thanks for your comment and your question. Once it is soaken with water and has a bait mounted, it does sink due to the weight of the water and the bait as such. Besides that, some fishes do feed at the surface anyway, think of high standing fish varieties like rudd or roach - so you do not need to go deep. There are also varieties in which pebbles are pressed into the wood as a substitute for lead - but in my experience that is not a necessity at all. Hope that answers the question. :-)

    why in the hell would this hook be illegal?its a freaking twig man lol

    • @RathwulvenBushcraft
      @RathwulvenBushcraft  5 лет назад

      Hey Joe, thanks for your question. The answer is a pretty simple one: Both for hunting and fishing, several laws apply to prevent the unneccesary harm of animals, poaching, and so on. In this particular case, the gorge hook method is a rather brutal technique which inebitably results in causing severe internal injuries to fish - which are, of course, living beings capable of feeling pain.
      As some people also fish for fun or as a "sport" (catch and release, for example), this method needs to be prohibited by law to ensure that abuse of such a method can be punished legally.
      I hope this clarifies the context, as fishermen and/or hunters we always have a moral duty and must act at the best of our capabilities to treat other living beings with respect and dignity. That also includes discipline in regards to making every end of a living creature as quick and painless as possible. This technique is slow and painful though.
      Have a good one!
