  • Ever wish you could have a nice DETACHED probe like on all them fancy-schmancy snobby Geigers like the LUDLUM 3 and others without spending all that cash?
    Well heck, YOU CAN!
    This video shows how I modified my common "starter" Geiger counter model GMC-320 to have a versatile, sensitive, and easy to use EXTERNAL PROBE.
    Here I show how I used a regular telephone cord and jack (an RJ9 jack) to easily and conveniently set this mod up!
    Items used:
    RJ9 Connector: www.amazon.com...
    RJ9 White phone cord (you can find these in thrift stores too): www.amazon.com...

    Excellent Mod!! I modded my 320 and put in a Russian Alpha detector on the end of the 320 inside of a white telephone wall box. Looks a little gnarly but it works great!

      @AtomicElectronCo  2 года назад +1

      Wow! That's a great idea! It might not calibrate exactly but honestly I'd think it'd still give you accurate enough readings for hobby purposes. I suppose the alpha detectors work on about the same voltage.

    2:42 I'd love to find a necklace like that to use for a test sample.
    I plan on installing a SBM-20 in my 320+ V4, and I plan on also making an external probe with a SBT-11A that connects to the 320 by a BNC connector I'm going to install on the side near the battery compartment. I'm going to install a switch that way I can choose to use the internal tube, or the external probe.

    You should put the anode-resistor within inside the probe instead of letting it in the Device, because the additional capacity of the cable decreases the Lifetime of the geiger-tube. The cable-capacity (a few 100 pF) is charged to 400 V DC an discharged through the tube with a high current, if there is no limiting resistor, like you described.

    Lol I actually did this exact same thing before seeing your video, except I used a 2ft pvc pipe and put it on the tip so I can walk around the forest and keep it near the ground comfortably. Also id advise using the epoxy and not contact cement, I tried cc and it sort of melts insulation as it cures. I used a thicker gauge wire (an old vacuum cord) was worried about voltage drop but I guess its not noticeable.

      Do you think I can just use hot glue ive used it for a lot of other electrical stuff and it works great as long as nothing gets hot but let me know what you think I want to try this !

      @@inductor1.77 thank you !! I am doing it to a tiny tubed HFS 20 and I think it will work out well can I use other wire besides phone wire ?? Or should I use phone wire because its super thin

      @@inductor1.77 I want mine to be more sensitive and help search for radioactive sources im not worried about water proof ability because I will be very careful with my tools when I'm out eventually I want to get a full water proof one but I won't be in the rain or anything with it so should be fine

      @@inductor1.77 Very good to know !! I will keep this in mind I should be good with this phone wire then as its well insulated but I will experiment in the future with 300volt wire I also have liquid insulation so of there is every a issue of not enough I can just add it where its needed and wait 10 hours for it to dry but I can't wait to see the results ill let you know and possibly even post a video on my other chanel to show you if I do get it working its with a tiny geieger counter I haven't seen anyone do this yet but I'm sure they have tried it I can't be the only one to do this with a HFS-20

    Great idea! Did you connect all 4 of the RJ9 leads or just 2 of them?

  • @WillowFox
    @WillowFox 2 года назад +1

    Can you toss a link to where you connected the leads inside? Also is it as accurate with the new remote tube? Like, do you get the same readings from the same source, with the internal as you do with the remote probe?
    And can you toss an A/B switch in to switch to remote or internal tube?

    • @AtomicElectronCo
      @AtomicElectronCo  2 года назад +1

      Sorry for not replying earlier. I took the original tube from the inside and put it on the end, however, I suppose you could set up a switch and use another tube of the same type. If you open up the detector, you'll easily see where to connect things. Just make sure to note polarity. The tube snaps in/out and that's where I connected the rj9 plug. Hope that helps.

    Really cool idea but I have the 500+ and it has 2 tubes low and high range so which tube or tubes would I use ???

    • @hannesk19
      @hannesk19 Год назад

      I‘m late, but you could build 2 probes. When the low dose probes maxes out, you can use the high dose probe. But make sure to only use cpm or calibrate it appropriately if you end up doing that.

    any difference to the 300E plus? i got my ludlum, and cdv, and one that has no info on it what so ever, lol

    • @AtomicElectronCo
      @AtomicElectronCo  2 года назад

      I'd imagine that it'd be almost the same, maybe identical. Just open up and remove the tube (it snaps in) and connect the RJ9 plug. Keep polarity in mind.

    • @madmax2069
      @madmax2069 Год назад +1

      The 300e is basically the same as the 320+, the 320+ does have a few more features like a gyroscope to flip the screen depending on how you're holding it, has a temperature sensor, has 1MB storage (the 300e has 64KB storage), and Treshhold Data Logging.

    Why doesn't the detector get contaminated with radiation?

    • @AtomicElectronCo
      @AtomicElectronCo  Год назад +1

      Radiation itself does not contaminate. It is radioactive particles that could get on it which would contaminate. The particles themselves in this disk are isolated.
