I've had several artist tell me they had difficulties burning zigzags, so here are some hints to resolve any issues. 1) Make sure the board is thoroughly sanded. Then wet it, let it dry, and sand it again. This will produces a super smooth board and will reduce rough spot that will snag and interfere with burning 2 - Use a light hand pressure when burning zigzags. The razor edge of the shader has a tendency to want to sink into the wood, and a firm hand pressure will cause it to sink even more. I keep a very light pressure when burning. I just let the pen tip glide over the surface. 3 - Keep the heat on medium or lower. Higher heat settings will also cause the pen tip to sink easier into the wood, so try lowering the heat setting and see if that helps.
You did fantastic on your first video. This is all new to me and I’ve bought a nice machine and eager to learn. Your instructions are exactly what I need. I’ve been painting for years and ready to learn Something new
Hi Cheryl, Welcome to the exciting world of pyrography. I hope you find it as enjoyable as I do. It will be interesting to see how your painting background influences your burning. I have a drawing background, so I tend to use the pyrography pens the same way I would a pencil. I have an acquaintance who is a painter and sometimes does pyrography. Some of her burn strokes look like they were applied with a paint brush. I tried to mimic the look, but couldn't do it. Thank you for the kind words on a video I find a bit cringey. We all have to start somewhere. I doubt cringey is really a word, but I'm using it anyways. :)
@@PyrographyMadeEasy It s hard to put up and look at some of the older tutorials compared with where me are after making videos for a few years, but then, some remain excellent.
Thank you so much for watching. I really appreciate the kind words. This is an old tutorial. I think it was the first one I ever did. I can't watch it because it makes me cringe. Thanks again for the nice comment
I loved that! I am working on my first mountain and your video helped SOOOO much!! And made it feel so easy. Can't wait to try the techniques you showcased here. I subscribed and will be checking out more of your tutorials as I learn this amazing art!
Thanks for the time & effort you've put into this video! I do a lot of pyrography but different style. I've never done nature or landscape. Just a week ago I got a commission to burn lakes surrounded by mountains! Well, I took it because I know I will do it. But hell! I did start it just by myself. Without looking up how to do it actually. My mountains are not bad at all (nothing like yours though :) But gosh, the water... So now that you've explained how what, where & why I know I'm gonna do that box in no time :) Excellent explanation, super easy to understand it. Thanks so much Brenda! 💛
Hi. I'm happy the information was useful. congratulations on the commission. I'd love to see it when you are done. If you don't mind sharing a picture, send it to me at: PyrographyME@gmail.com Brenda
Just starting out in Pyrography, your tutorials are brilliant, very informative, easy to follow, thank you so much for your time and effort, will be following your tutorials from now on.
Hello Andrew, Congratulations on picking up a wonderful new hobby! Thank you for the compliment. Pyrography is a lot of fun and I hope you will enjoy creating artwork in the medium!
Hi Benda, Would love to see another video on the burning of water, with the water up close rather than in the background. I am currently working on a close up of a loon, with it's reflection in the water, which is why I am searching for examples. The method you demonstrate for the water in distance may work, but the foreground requires long rippling and broader strokes. Just an idea for a future video. Thanks for being such a great resource!
Hi Lorraine, I might have a video that may help you. The project is a Northern Shoveler duck. It's not a complete project tutorial. Instead it covers some of the more "interesting" aspects of the project. One of those aspects is the reflection in the water. The technique is very different from the distant water in the mountain lake tutorial. Ugg...that was my first tutorial I every did, and I just cringe when I see snippets of it. Back to the point. Here's a link to the N. Shoveler duck tutorial: ruclips.net/video/PpLmcMF2Oy0/видео.html If that doesn't help let me know. I'll add 'reflected water' to the list of future demos. Just be aware that I'm very slow about getting to the demos. It doesn't help that I'm on a bit of a summer break. :)
Wow, c'est une vieille vidéo. Je pense que cela aurait pu être ma première tentative de création d'un didacticiel RUclips. :) Je pense que les mandalas et les fleurs simples ont tendance à être de bons sujets pour débutants. I gravitated to the J shader almost immediately and it became my primary shader. The E shader is so large that I use it mostly for backgrounds and large work areas.
Brenda. Just starting. Need advice on wire nibs built in or the ones that r removable 2nd which Burn unit r u recommending. Not interested in up grading Looking forward to your advice. Tim
Hi Tim, first off I've only used a Colwood, so I can't tell you if it is the best burner out there. Instead all I can say is that I haven't had any problems with my unit, and I like to think I'm creating decent artwork with it. Val of Drawing with Fire has owned every brand of burner out there (or pretty close to it), and she's currently in love with the Optima brand. Prior to that I believe she was a Colwood fan, but you'd have to check with her to confirm that. As for pen tips I wrote a post about my favorites: ruclips.net/user/postUgxvHSJuvWGyyPiLJxN4AaABCQ Lastly, as for the fixed tip or replaceable, I haven't noticed a difference between them. For me the replaceable tips are easier to store in my handy pen tip holder, so that's what I use.
Hi Kim, thank you for the compliment. I have been requested to do more scenery tutorials, so it's on my todo list. With my current schedule I will estimate that it will be March before I get to a more detailed scenery tutorial. Thank you for the suggestion and comment! Brenda
Hello from Canada❤….I am just beginning to learn about wood-burning and I wonder what is the best inexpensive type of wood to burn? Is birch ok, or what would you suggest for a beginner? Thanks and I enjoy your videos.
Hi Tim, Hello from Washington state. Welcome to the exciting artform called pyrography! I hope you'll love it as much as I do. Birch is a wonderful wood. So is basswood, and maple. I've also burned on poplar and enjoyed it. I do a lot of demo burn on birch plywood because it is usually cheaper than a solid wood board. I did write a community post semi-recently about burning on really cheap wood. It might have some info of value. Here's a link to the post: ruclips.net/user/postUgkx0SDZc1EndSZJ0_6lapyl1la0uquclez9 Another option is to use watercolor paper. With the high prices of wood right now, watercolor paper is cheaper alternative. Just get a heavy weight of paper, I like to use 140 lb (300gsm) 100% cotton paper. Thank you for the comment! Have a fantastic week
This video is great, thank you! I am wondering how staining this board afterwards would look? I would like to try to make a mountain/lake scene like this as a sign, and above the mountains write "Welcome". But I'm not sure the words would look great on just the plain wood background above the mountain. Would love any tips or suggestions.
Thank you for the lovely compliment and comment. Great question and one I don't have an answer to. I don't tend to stain wood after I've burned on it as want the burning to really stand out. Depending on what wood you used, the grain might become very predominate when you seal it. Also, I'm guessing that you plan on this being an outdoor sign, so that means you need to use something like spar urethane to seal it. The sealant imparts a definite yellow hue just like polyurethane does, so that might give you some color you're after. As always, I would recommend testing out ideas on a piece of scrap wood to see how it will look. Brenda
What do you mean you wouldn't hang this project on the wall? ;) It's very cool! All that's missing is a cabin, then you would have my dream home. Thanks again for the tutorial. It's almost exactly like the project I'm starting, only mine will have a cabin. :)
Hi Terry, This artwork does not appeal to me. It's a little too basic; ie not a lot of detail, for my tastes. Others have taken this basic concept and created some fantastic artwork with it. The did stuff in the foreground that was interesting and kept the mountain & lake as distance background filler. Looked great. I'm confident that you'll create something much more interesting and dynamic than what I did.
