I love that you were both visibly disappointed when she rejected Fred. You understood that it was not just she was a malicious gold-digger. she was just a woman whom from the very young age was taught that she has to support her family and this was the only way to do it.
The scene when publishers' daughter were the ones that made him interested in the book was based on real life.
"She says the whole book that she doesn't want to marry" - I love the little nod to the fact that the ending of Little Women may not have been the ending that the author (Louisa May Alcott) had originally intended. Little Women was inspired by her own life, and Louisa May Alcott became a famous author and never married.
I really like the way they explain it in a uastoday article...
By making Jo a stand-in for Alcott, Gerwig reflects the compromises made by many female writers of the time, who were often forced to use male pseudonyms or remain anonymous in order to attract readers. She also, in a sense, is able to course-correct on behalf of Alcott, giving Jo the type of agency her creator always wanted for her.
"I just knew I could not do the ending just as the book (did) - especially because Louisa didn’t really want to end it that way," Gerwig told Film Comment magazine. "If we can’t give her an ending she would like, 150 years later, then what have we done? We’ve made no progress."
Yeah, but the romance ending might just be more of a commercial thing than a female thing. That’s a very Hollywood approach. And if there is a romance novel, you want everyone to end up with someone!!
@@whitenoisereacts Regan is referring to the original book which was written in 1868 where it was a romance ending rather the intended ending by the author Alcott that Jo remain unmarried. So not a Hollywood approach! And it was not intended to be a romance novel either; Alcott wrote Little Women very much about herself and her own sisters. I think it ties in well with Amy's speech in the middle of the film about women not being able to earn much money or live independently of marriage. The expectation at that time was that the only happy ending possible for women was marriage and so it predominantly is a female thing that a novel couldn't be written at the time where the female lead didn't get married by the end. Hence why Gerwig wanted the new version to correct Jo's ending.
@@whitenoisereacts Apparently they made Alcott (the author of the original book) add a marriage for Jo, but the directors knew people would freak out if they strayed too far from the original material by taking it out. So I like they snuck it in by having Jo without a wedding ring, watching her book get published- sort of indicating the last little bit that's book-canonical is not movie-canonical.
The readers wanted Jo to marry Laurie (what we in the U.S. read in one volume was originally two books, and still is in the UK), and Alcott didn’t want to, so she created Professor Bhaer. In Jo’s Boys, Nan becomes a doctor and stays single, though.
@@HuntingViolets I liked the professor for Jo, though, and it wasn't just about the two of them - the whole point was their mutual love of philanthropy in creating a school for boys.
Florence Pugh was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in this movie! Damn, I can't believe she didn't win.

Florence Pugh who played Amy did an amazing job playing a young girl and then an adult women. You can SEE the difference, she moves different, changes the maturity in the way she talks, carries herself with more alliance; but every change she makes, made sense for the character. Honestly she's one of the best actors about nowadays in my option.
Jo being told to marry her female characters it's a hint to the actual writer of the novel being told the same, Jo isn't supposed to marry anyone cause that's just not her thing, she doesn't want it. Great reaction (i haven't finished btw lol)
i felt that that scene where Jo and Mr.Bhaer get together under the rain is kinda mocking that dude that told Jo he would only publish her novel if the protagonist got married. Specially cause they showed it right after and with Jo laughter. kinda "yeah yeah alright, they will get married, whatever". And i think thats the reason the scene si so over the top and cliché-ish. for me it has a different tone than the rest of the movie has precisely for that

Amy challenged Laurie to be better where Jo was ok with him staying the same. Jo seemed to be upset because she lost her 'backup'. I don't think she ever truly loved Teddy in a romantic way but just didn't want to be alone. She wasn't sad she lost someone romantically but lost someone who needed her. I loved how Amy was depicted in this movie.

Jo’s monologue about women, loneliness, their worth, etc explained how I’ve always felt.
I reject the modern ideology of a relationship, because it’s so expected. Society expects girls to crave a man to love, a child to bare, an a home to clean - so I reject that. However, it is incredibly lonely.
the part about being lonely got me. when youre a girl constantly trying to reject stereotypes you kind of romantically isolate yourself, at least in my experience
@@tink6225 Honestly, I do that too, but I also think what I do is unhealthy. We shouldn't be avoiding stereotypes just to make ourselves more miserable. We need to balance 'being our true selves' and still being independent

Think about how our brains and bodies have evolved over millennia to care for and manage home life. Extended families were like a whole little society and women are especially equipped to handle that environment. That's why we're lonely when rejecting "stereotypes."
Even though the plot is very simple, the movie is amaaazing because of how the characters are complex and real. To me, any movie with nicely written characters will be a great movie. I really love how convincing the movie is because it doesn't over dramatize ou romanticize anything, it makes you really feel things because of how real the situations are. Also the cast peeerfect.

One, it’s great to see two straight guy’s watching & enjoying a movie such as this, helps make it more acceptable to others (Bravo). Second, I have never seen any of these adaptations myself and I’m a gay man, so thanks for opening my eyes to a terrific movie.
amy is forever my favorite. i think a lot of people miss the huge amount of passion in her because next to a supernova like jo, she appears dim. not to mention her character growth? chef's kiss.
the part that gets me no matter how many times I watch this, is the ending, watching Jo's book getting published. Because you can tell she's getting choked up about it..because she wrote a book about her, and her family. And she wrote it for someone else, she wrote it for Beth. And that's what makes me cry every time. The whole story we're watching unfold is Jo's book, written for her sister.
It’s kind of funny because Alcott hated that book.
the most interesting in the movie are the clothes. for example; beth is dressed in lilac and lavander the whole film. Purple is in christianity color of mourming. This indicates Beth's early death. She has her hair open in the movie, this tells us that Beth is a child Who will never grow Up. She never leaves home like her sisters

Greta Gerwig definitely did a great job directing this. You guys should check out Marriage Story which was directed by her partner Noah Baumbach. It was released same year. And they were strong contenders for best direction category.

I think the things that Laurie was to attracted to in Jo, are highlighted in adult Amy. "She a deeply passionate about something and she wants to be great, so much so that if she isn't up to standards she's willing to quit." That quote applies to both Jo and Amy. Jo is consonantly writing in her novel and little stories, she goes to New York to follow her dreams. Amy was consonantly sketching and painting when she could, she goes to Paris to follow her passion and improve her craft. They parallel each other, Laurie just never noticed her. But when he sees her in Paris she's come into her own, he has an opportunity to see her, really see her not as Jo's little sister, or just a member of her family- he starts to see her as an individual will strong opinions, willing to put him in his place when he's wrong. Jo and Laurie would have never truly worked, have her be head of a household in high society is a task she would resent Laurie for, but Amy flourishes in that environment and pushes Laurie to be better. Amy romanticizes Laurie so much (and always has), she forces Laurie to see himself for who he could be. Jo is too selfish, the only person she romanticizes is herself, and the characters in her stories. Amy is practical and blunt in what she wants, and Laurie and her together compliment each other. Jo and him would just clash.
I love the non-linear format and how refreshing it feels for those who already love the series. Especially the ending relationships that many already expecting so you get to see Laurie with Amy more
I recommending watching Becoming Jane, starring Ann Hathaway and James McAvoy, its a bio movie on Jane Austin and her rumored love that gave her the inspiration to write Pride and Prejudice. The movie echos similar shots of the 2005 film to tie together what happens to Jane influences the book, which you can see her writing throughout the film, I think you'll enjoy spotting the similarities in the camera work. It's a great movie and it deepens the appreciation for Pride and Prejudice.

Omg yes! It's one of my favorite films, the cinematography is so good, costumes are 10/10 and the subtle humor is great. Now I gotta watch it again for like the 10th time.

Me too. What I like about this version, it gave a correct depiction of Amy. It wasn't her fault regarding Laurie. The other thing I love about this version is that the way the book was published and they actually used real life circumstances that Alcott had.

My personal favourite is the 1994 version with Winona Ryder. Never gets old. Little Women was one of my favourite books growing up and i loved the book and Winona Ryder so much i literally ordered the dvd which had to be imported to my country.
I did not know that Bob Odenkirk was gonna be in the movie so when he popped up outta nowhere, the dumbest grin appeared on my face. AND he title-dropped the movie lol!
Very glad to know that he is doing well and recovering after his heart-related emergency on the set of Better Call Saul. He's a legend.
I love this movie and book, in the book though the Amy-Laurie relationship is really well developed by letters from wherever Laurie was travelling, and a really cute scene in a lake at a point where they'd actually became a good team and really loved each other💖
3:02, this scene is quite hilarious behind the scenes, as Pugh and Meryl Streep were so cold that they had to share a box of fries from Carl's Jr.
I love the way that this adaptation informs us right away with Laurie and Amy's relationship by starting first with their interaction in Paris. And having Amy mention in the beginning of the film that we know right away that Jo rejected him, so that the audience would drop the expectation between Jo and Laurie. The non-linear editing also help comparing similar memories between their childhood and adulthood.
I believe that the second time Jo wanted to accept Laurie's proposal, it was because she didn't want to feel lonely now that they were all grown ups and her childhood was far behind her. She was right about her reasons of rejecting him the first time. She hates elegant society, and even though she wanted to go to Europe with Aunt March, it was clear that the trip was never about site-seeing and traveling. Aunt March wanted to find a wealthy man to marry off Amy in Europe, which was why she never showed any interests in Amy's painting classes. If Jo was the one accompanying Aunt March in Paris, she would've hated the socializing and the balls.
I absolutely love this adaptation and it was my favourite version so far, I love Greta Gerwig's screenplay so much. Each version speak to a time of their own little women.
And now you guys should really watch Emma 2020!! It came out at the similar time and was a Jane Austen classic too!
It also highlights how Laurie and Jo are alike when he says "I hate fuss and feathers"

One very lovely thing that the filmmakers did was they recreated a duplicate of Orchard House for this film. Orchard House was the house where Louisa May Alcott lived. It's wonderful to see her book come alive in her home.

ACTUALLY Amy is the younger one, like REALLY young. And Kirsten Dunst plays her (the same ctress that does Mary Jane in Spider-Man - and she is AWESOME)
You should see the 1994 adaptation, it shows the ages of the characters really well, besides it`s really good too.
Which is why as much as I like Florence pugh, I wish they gone with somebody else for her younger version. She's supposed to be like 8. She in no way looks 8.
@@marianne5055 I've watched the 2019 adaptation first, but when I saw the 1994 version I fell in love with it as well. But I understand what other people say, it feels different. In the scene where their dad comes home and little Amy runs to him and hugs his feet I almost cried.
I appreciate the new version but to me 1994 version is far superior in so many ways...I see people love how the treated the professor in the newest version, but I personally think the way they had to tell jo she loved him and she just followed their direction made jo seem stupid...in the 1994 jo's relationship with the professor make so much more since, just like in the book....yes Louisa may Alcott did not want jo to be married, but she cares about jo that when she added that romance in she did it in a way that made jo feel intelligent and know herself and own her choices as her own...not being pushed into it after fighting against it. It just made me mad.

@@teresacarrico6397 Haven't read the book, but this did seem somewhat out of character. The way she suddenly falls into the "women don't know what they want" cliche and is running after a man after spending the whole movie being intelligent, knowing what she wants and pointing out it's not a husband.
I wasn’t really a fan of the non chronological order this was told, I found it kind of confusing initially, and I read the book so many times growing up! I understand why the director chose to do it like this, I feel like she had to try something new considering this is like the seventh adaptation of the novel. But your reaction made me appreciate it more, honestly. I absolutely love the cast, I think everyone is so well chosen, particularly Jo and Laurie (I heard somewhere that they try to play the femininity on Laurie’s character and the masculinity on Jo, how he is ‘pretty’ while she is more ‘handsome’ and that works so well). Apparently Luisa May Alcott (the writer) was flooded with letters originally of people who wanted Jo and Laurie to end up together and she absolutely refused to haha.

This was the last movie I have seen in the cinema right before the pandemic started. I like it a lot, but I prefer the 1994 version, where the girls looked just like I imagined them in the book. Meg is 16, Jo is 15, Beth is 13 and Amy is 12, she is supposed to be a little girl. I read this book a lot when I was a kid, but I had only the first part, so I didn't know that Beth dies, until I saw the 1994 movie. I would love to see how you would like that one.

It can be a confusing first watch, but a second and third super helps. Another amazing tidbit: The scenes colors change between warmer (the past) and cooler (the present). Once you recognize that subtle shift, I feel like it clarifies the story a lot.

Loved this book as a kid, and this movie is great!
A great way to keep track of the time jumps is to look at the colors. In the 'present' day, the tones are cool and blue, and the 'past' is warmer, with the golden memories of their childhood. You can especially see comparison in the scenes where Jo runs down the stairs after Beth is sick, bc it's almost the same shots, but with hugely varying tones.

i put off watching this for sooo long - up until this year. i love little women and had the books when i was younger and even a collection of dolls based on the girls. but i heard mixed reviews of this movie about historical inacuracies and i just didn't think it'd be that good. i finally saw it this year and it blew me away. is it perfect? no, but the storytelling and characters are so, so heartwarming and it instantly became like my "comfort movie." i've seen it four times now and it just gets me every single time.
Okay James, you’ve said a couple nice things about Amy in particular so far and I’m wondering if you’ve seen her already in Black Widow ☺️ I feel bad I didn’t notice her overly much in this favorite classic but her hilarious performance in Black Widow made me rethink her here.

I'm actually the opposite--loved Little Women, and HATED reading Little Men lol. I'd recommend Jo's Boys, as well.
I read all three but as Amy was my favorite character I’m a big fan of Little Women

It's cool to see you enjoyed this without knowing the story first. I enjoyed it a lot when I watched it but kinda felt like I was able to "fill in the gaps" of the story because I know what happened, but that it was a bit rushed in the movie. I would have loved this as a mini series to see more of the story on screen.
I got a little teary eyed at the end of this, imagining myself being published one day. I'm getting closer!

It's considered a children's book, which always made me laugh, but I recommend Little Women, and Little Men about Jo's boy's school, highly for reading! I've cried because of these books, and cried, even more, when I read what Louisa May Alcott's childhood was like! She also wrote vivid stories full of murder and drugs and scandal, but for years these books were so beloved that everyone forgot her other works!
I’d also recommend Jo’s Boys, the final book in the series.

Just got done watching and I loved how really deep and connected y'all got to this film. 😁 While I like this version, I much prefer and better love the Winona R./Christian B. version. To me it just has a much more....warm - feeling of home vibe. You guys should try that one out sometime...maybe in November during Fall. The acting in it was very good as well. ☺🎥💝
This is my favorite movie and book, and seeing people who are unfamiliar with the material experience it for the first time is lovely. I really loved the takes y'all had, especially from a male perspective which isn't something you see much with this story.

Beth was very shy and caring. The reason she was playing with dolls was because no one else wanted to as they were broken. It was beautifully written.

This is the best reaction video I have watched to date. Thank you! I am a huge fan of the book... and I will admit the first time I saw this film I was disappointed that a portion of the age gap wasn't felt or seen as strongly as it was portrayed in the book (which provided more conflict/discomfort) and the chemistry between Laurie and Jo... It was a huge part of the book for me. Otherwise, this film is golden.
You guys should watch the netflix trilogy called Fear Street. It’s based on the books written by R.L. Stine, the guy who made goosebumps. It is basically an adult horror version of goosebumps and to my surprise i loved it more than I thought i would. I highly recommend!

The 90s version of LITTLE WOMEN is the best version. This one is good. The other Winona Ryder version is just so heartfelt and endearing.
I LOVE Little Women =) My favorite version. The story is so relatable to me as I have two older and two younger sisters. I love them dearly. And I LOVE Amy in this version! She's so adorable! XD

If you want to see more from the actress that played Beth (Eliza Scanlen) you guys should watch that movie she did around the same time called Babyteeth, it's an utterly fantastic Australian movie where, ironically, she again plays a dying girl. Strongly recommend!
Also to add, if we're gonna go on a Victorian/Regency romance/ drama kick, You gotta see Sense and Sensibility the 1995 version. Also a story by Jane Austen.
This was great, guys. Classic book, and Gerwig did a great job.
Beth isn't the youngest. And the timeline is linear in the book, but I think it interesting that Greta Gerwig decided to jump forward and backwards. I t worked.
At the start of the book, Amy is 11 going on 12, Beth is 13, Jo is 15 and Meg is almost 17. Then it jumps ahead three years to Meg's wedding. Glad you chose to review this one.
Please react to the 1994 version of Little Women! I really like this new version, but I absolutely love the older version, it's one of my favorite movies!
I love that the whole point they show the scene of her agreeing to have her marry at the end is meant to make you question if the character actually did run after him at the train station. Even if she did and the scene of her agreeing to change the ending she may have wanted to keep the story with her not marrying cause of what she believes in x
This version is almost confusing if you didn't read the book, but they get the feeling of the story more than the previous movie adaptation.
I've never been a romantic but this movie brings out the 'I want a love story like this' in me lol. It's such a comfort movie. I could watch it over and over forever.
This is a good interpretation but for anyone who hasn’t read the book or seen older versions of the movie, it most-likely doesn’t make sense because everything is out of order. They mix “present day” with past memories without any indication. The 1994 version with Christian Bale, Winona Rider, Susan Sarandon, and Claire Danes, Gabriel Byrne, and Kirsten Dunst is the best adaptation of the book. 🤷🏻♀️
While the Winona Rider version will always be my favorite, I loved how they portrayed Amy and Laurie’s relationship in this one. It felt like it came straight out of the books. That is what I loved about it.
Was not really thrilled with the other storylines because they were done better in other versions.
