Perhaps next year the captains and officers should have secret personal objectives - perhaps an imperial officer who wants the areonautica to take heavy casualities to reduce the influence of the imperial navy, or a noble who wants to protect their uncle's promethium refinery more than the shield generator they are meant to be defending.
You could take this even further- Salamanders players could be focussed on defending civilians while Black Templars want to take the heads of enemy leaders. That looks even more awesome then last year!! I really hope I can find some friends to come over for next years game from Belgium and make a giant roadtrip xD
"Imperials used a mechanic we gave them to replenish their forces and we didn't like that, so they can't do that again and we penalised them with a major narrative loss. On an unrelated note, we gave the chaos team a free second wave of attackers because we liked what they did" ??????????
It's not that we didn't like the mechanic, it's just on 1 or 2 boards it created an unfair advantage and definitely had a negative impact on the players fun. Also it encouraged players in some cases to just throw away their armies because they they could just respawn, removing a lot of the risk/reward. On some tables it worked well, but it was used to helped a team keep playing without tipping the balance of the game. But overall, the reinforcements pool mechanic has kinda been unnecessary. It was designed to help players with less points keep playing, and to be honest most people brought way more then they needed. As a result, we are going to radically scale the back the mechanic to encourage players to manage their resources, but keep it in the back pocket so it can be used in special circumstances. All of this has been run by the players of the last event and the overwhelming response to the change has been positive :)
@@MordianGlory that is perfectly understandable and logical. My confusion comes from then providing the Ork players on another table a bunch of free reinforcements after they got decimated. It seemed a bit counter to what was happening on the other table. I know we're lacking a lot of context, but just on the description given on the video it seemed like two conflicting decisions, so I was asking for clarification on the different approaches to these two seemingly similar situations.
@repthe21st66 that's totally fair! To give a little more context, We gave the orks a load of reinforcements because honestly, it would have been over day 1 without it. They got a second wave (which was nowhere near as big on the first wave) to keep the game rolling and to give them opportunities to do some cool narrative stuff, like Gaz fighting a Knight in single combat :) In all honesty this was not even via the Reinforcment mechanic, it was a joint decision made by all captains to give them a lump of extra forces in one go for the second day, and those extra forces did not effect the tables outcome. In contrast, the manufactorum imperials used the reinforcements mechanic 3 times, and then this was essentially done again using a Super Strat (another mechanic) which got them about an extra 10,000pts. Considering this board was very very closely fought, these extra points were too impactful and there is a chance it changed the outcome of the table. That is absolutely not what the reinforcements are meant for, as essentially one team (the Traitors in this case) has been punished for doing really well, and they did not get any reinforcements themselves because they never really got close to being "combat ineffective ". Long story short, the point of the reinforcements was to allow people to keep having fun, not to change the outcome. However, it was not working as intended in places so we are scaling it back drastically based on player feedback :)
@@MordianGlory Just an idea for the future (not next) apocalypse games, perhaps giving ALL players 500-1000pts back on the 2nd day would accomplish a similar idea of keeping people in the fight, without inviting gaminess. You should tune the actual point value to whatever the expected minimum loss is, and if anyone takes less losses then that, you could give them some kind of narrative bonus in exchange (which rewards husbanding the resources). That *should* also allow Rapid Reaction to come back. However, Rapid Reaction could also be improved by adding a reinforcement delay (roll for arrival), where the force has to actually *get there* before it can be effective in aiding the defense, which would again promote husbanding of resources in the meantime. You could also have them travel across another table on the way, where possible, with narrative goals of destroying/protecting them before they reach their destination, though its less doable than "roll for arrival."
maybe limiting the super strats to be once per event day would make it less gamey, if the whole team has to be consulted for a superstrat, you better have a good reason
Question regarding how the lists and games are ran. How many points does each person bring and for the turns is it one side goes for an hour than the other or is it player by player (I’m assuming per side)
O7 to all the players who demonstrated sportsmanship, because from the sounds of it, I would have been unimaginably salty at all the narrative shenanigans that popped up halfway. I guess one simply had to be there soaking in the atmosphere in order to see the fun in it. I get that if a game looks like its going in favour of one side too early, the other side will feel frustrated and lose interest in playing for the next 2-3 days; hence the last minute twists to let them try and snatch some kind of victory from the jaws of defeat. But I can't help but feel frustrated at how one side would play well for 2 days straight, only to get blindsided by some new twist and have all their efforts wasted. I know its churlish for me to complain from an outsider's perspective. None of the actual players had any complaints after all! Still, that's the lingering feeling I had throughout listening to the after action report. Once again, my hats off to all the players for rolling with it for the sake of making sure everybody had fun. I doubt I could have been anywhere near as gracious XD

@gandalf50shades So to add a bit more context, I believe this is a reflection of how each team approached the event. The Imperial Team had spreadsheets and other documents planning meticulously how to win each board. They had regular team meetings before and during the event to discuss the strategic situation. They made sure the right players and the right armies were on the right tables to give them the best possible chance of a tactical victory on each board. The chaos team turned up, drank a load of beers and just went with it. They had way less focus on winning the boards and as a result they lost most of the games. BUT, because they were not so focused on victory or a pre arranged plan, the chaos team on nearly every single board instinctly forged the narrative and just interacted with the story missions more. What's really interesting is this also happened last year as well! I think it gives real insight into the different types of player in the Warhammer community, and what those different players want out of a game. Hope that all makes sense and adds some helpful insight :)
One minute of silence for the poor lad that in the next tournament would had really needed that combat inefective hopa that it still reamins something in the organization but players maybe not be told about that would be the best IMHO
