    I got mine about 2 weeks ago (My 4th Vikings Razor) it's a great razor probably my favorite now. I have shaved with it on lowest and highest setting without biting me. Point to note: It's better to open the butterfly doors when making adjustments to the settings as it takes the load off the internal mechanism. Keep up the videos I enjoy them.

      Thanks. I also noticed (on mine at least) that blades barely fit through the doors unless I go to the highest settings. I love mine. I nearly got the crusader way cheap, but noticed the weight and finish, and didnt care that it was more. still no regrets. also liking Cella

    Thank you for another great review, Mark. The Emperor is on sale at Amazon now and this video helped me to have confidence in my purchase. I especially appreciate that you compared it side by side with other Viking's Blade razors so I could know what to expect from the length and thickness. Cheers. :)

    Hello from Fiji. Thank you for informative video's . Recently, I found a Gillette all plastic disposable razor at the astonishingly low price of $2.75 Fjd complete with 2 7 o'clock Gillette blades. To date I have had 60 shaves using the same blade and will continue using this same blade. I have a simple technique, wash my face before shaving with warm water and soap to remove any dirt. The blades last very long doing this. I shave using toilet soap, nothing special. What was a chore has now become an adventure, thanks to you and the advice given. I am 87 years of age by the grace of God.

    Mine just came in today. I haven't used it yet, but I will tomorrow night after work. So far I have the VB Chieftain 5BC, Rockwell 6C, King C Gillette and now the VB Emperor(frosted chrome). So far the VB Chieftain 5BC is my favorite paired with a Gillette Silver Blue blade and Pre De Provence #63 shave soap. I use Cremo Heritage Red balm for postshave. The Rockwell 6C with a permasharp on setting 4 is almost perfect, but the VB still wins. I am hoping I will get the superior shave with Emperor as I do with the Chieftain but with more comfort due to the asymmetrical head and adjustability. I do have the Cella soap and it is great, but for me it just seems like it does not allow me to get as close as my #63 soap does. thanks for the review.

      Hi, xaTASTEofCHAOSx. I recently did a video shave with the Emperor at: ruclips.net/video/6i30jPbGih0/видео.html
      I love this razor. You can use it to take advantage of the Asymmetrical razor head or simply use it as you would a regular DE razor. I also have pre de Provence but in the older container. I need ot use it again. Good stuff. Let me know how you like the Emperor. Enjoy!

      @@MarkSzorady So I didn't want to wait until tonight to shave. Today I used the Emperor with a permasharp blade and the Cella shave soap. It was a hell of a nice shave. Very smooth and efficient! I still had to do some buffing and I believe that is just due to the permasharp. But it was still a very nice shave. The Cella does perform better with the Emperor so that is a big plus. I will continue using the permasharp with this razor until it gets dull before I switch to my GSB which I feel is going to give me "that shave". I did have quit a bit of feedback from my alum around my neck and upper lip, but no blood. Mark you ought to do a blade war with your Emperor. A permasharp vs Gillette Silver Blue and Cella for both. Have a great day.

    I'm currently 5 shaves into a 15 shave commitment to using only my VB Emperor. Had mine awhile, but only used it seldom as my early impression was "meh".
    Frankly, I first bought the Emperor because it looks awesome. But it wasn't until my 3rd consecutive shave that I realized the head, by design, has an aggressive side and a mild side. I don't think Mark mentions this and it is likely that many owners don't realize it.
    The side with the scalloped safety bar is the aggressive side. On "6" that side to me has a blade feel comparable to my Futur. The smooth bar side is, to me, comparable to a vintage Tech. I use the "Tech" side for lips, chin, Adam's Apple, especially for against the grain third pass. Any of my prone to nicks area. Again, I think this is a feature most owners overlook.

    Hi Mark,
    I just bought the Viking Emperor the chrome one.
    You are right, It is so hefty and built like a tank. I was impressed.
    I also used horsetail brush from Vielong ( hair is obtained when grooming the horses)
    How do you store the safety razor ? Do you let air dry or take out the blade and dry with towel?
    If not left in washroom, is there an organizer of some sort to help keep all shaving tools in one place?
    I shaved on number 2 because I was uncomfortable after 30+ years of not wet shaving.
    I tried a blade sampler Derby and Astra that came with pathetic alum sticks (the alum rock is much better.)
    With Derby Premioum I wasn't super impressed so I will try the others next time. My skin was somewhat irritated compared to disposable razors though.
    Thanks for the great review ad your feed back

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  5 лет назад +2

      John, I simply turn the adjustment collar all the ay up to 9 and twist open the doors. This insures the doors are fully open. After every shave, I remove the blade and pat dry (I don't rub) and then with my towel, gently remove the excess water form the inner areas of the razor head and towel off the handle, etc. I then replace the blade and leave the doors open and hang on my razor stand. After I'm done with the after shave and mopping up the counter (I tell ya, I'm like a labrador in a water dish sometimes!), I then close the razor doors and return to the razor stand. That's it!:)
      With all my TTO razors, every so often, I'll get some mild detergent and do a cleaning to remove any build up (if that). But, for the most part, as long as I do a clean up after every shave, the razor stays neat and clean.:)
      HTH.:)

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, I use a safety razor to shave my head. I tend to use whatever razor is on my counter from the morning shave. However, lately, I've been using my Vikings Blade razors for my morning shaves this week.:) (So, yes, I've used the Vikings Blade Chieftain and their adjustable razors for head shaves.) Last night, I used the Chieftain Jr. and found that it gave me a really nice head shave. I tend to favor mild razors and the Chieftain Jr. is milder than the regular Chieftain. And I like a neutral to mild razor when doing a head shave (Chieftain is rated neutral, Junior is rated mild). While I like the Chieftain for head shaves, I have to give the nod to the Junior due to it being a bit more milder and my scalp skin being a bit thinner on top.:) It did a really nice job. The handle was long enough for getting the back of the neck and the doors locked in place nicely. (Although, when head shaving, and throughout the process, I always check the blade alignment and razor head to make sure things are secure whether it be a three-piece, two-piece, or Twist-To-Open.)
      I've used he Vulcan, as well. This is long handled version of the Chieftain. Again, the longer handle is nice for doing the back of the neck.:)
      A word about the Emperor and Crusader Adjustable razors: I use these for head shaving, too. I like that I can adjust to a milder setting and dial it up if I don't feel enough of the blade. But, not too much that it becomes overly aggressive. The Crusader's long handle works nicely.
      The only time I don't use a safety razor to shave my head is when I've had some sort of mishap from low door frames, etc. Every once in a blue moon, I bump my head and it might result in a bruise or cut. This last July I put a nice gash on my dome by not ducking low enough through a shorter door frame. Ouch! I was relegated to using an electric razor for several weeks (I shave my head twice a week) and then moved to a cartridge razor for several weeks more. THEN, I was finally able to get back to a safety razor after things were healed up.
      I've found that a safety razor gives me a cleaner head shave than both the cartridge and electric razors. Cleaner and closer. Again, I tend to favor milder razors and these work well for me when doing a head shave. A good shaving cream is key, though. When doing the head shave, I like shaving creams that give more slickness rather than cushion.
      HTH.:)

    Just ordered my emperor, but im trying to find the best blade to use with it...how aggressive are the blades used here? I was going to try the cayenne hot from viking and the Astra blades but dont wanna spend tons of money experimenting. New to double edge razors does the blade aggression matter as much or not really since this razor head is adjustable anyway? The mild blades by viking i think are too mild for my hair, i have sensative skin especially on my neck and prone to ingrowns, but my hair is course and grows back decently fast. Its not a really full beard but the hair is deff medium to full course. I ordered Proraso italian shave cream also due to it sounding high quality but only 10 bucks. J. R. It’s a disclaimer that all manufacturers should make. As far as I know bronze, gold, copper plated razors often age after a few years and start looking like a vintage razor. The process becomes faster if you constantly leave them in soapy water and don’t have a habit of drying them off. Depending on how you look at it, it could be a unique selling point.

However, being a brand new colour on the market (I humbly think we may be the first ever to release this colour on a razor), I need to ensure that customers will have the best experience with our razor by giving it proper maintenance - just in case. How would you say this handle compares to the Parker variant or a razor with a standard thickness handle based feel in the hands and such? Looking to get a good quality razor and a little skeptical about that thickness.

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  5 лет назад

      I have both as you may know.:) And I have a scale, so I did some razor weigh-ins.:)
      The Variant weighs in at 3.95 ounces (112.1 grams) and The Emperor comes in at 4.66 ounces (132.1 grams). Additionally, to give a bit more perspective, the Merkur Futur weighs in at 4.21 ounces (119.4 grams).
      When I first took hold of the Variant, I thought it had more weight than the Futur. Obviously, I was wrong. But, by comparison, when I first held the Emperor, I immediately knew it had more heft. Yet it still felt quite streamlined even though it's a fat-handled razor. I think it may have to do with the overall design, shape, and balance of the razor. To be sure, you know you're holding a fat-handled razor. But it feels absolutely perfect given its size and weight.
      The Emperor feels wonderful in the hand. One of the big differences in feel, IMHO, is the knurling pattern on the handle. Like it's cousin The Crusader, The Emperor has the perfect knurling pattern for its size and weight. It compliments the size/design and gives the wet shaver a very firm and assured grip. It aids and allows the razor's weight to do all the work during the shave.:) Whereas, if the Variant were larger, heavier and thicker, with the same knurling pattern it currently has, I don't think it would quite work. (I could be wrong).
      So, I'd say for size and weight, each razor has the correct knurling pattern. It really comes down to what you want...either a Fat-handled TTO razor (which is a wonderful throwback and homage to the Gillette Fatboy - prized among wet shavers) or a two-piece razor with a tight knurling pattern and little less weight.
      Since getting The Emperor, I have yet to use the Variant (or Futur). I keep reaching for The Emperor (and Crusader). The Emperor/Crusader give me a smoother shave and well, it's gotta be the knurling pattern.:)

    • @josephblurton3793
      @josephblurton3793 5 лет назад

      So you’d say the emperor shaves smoother and less aggressively? Having trouble deciding between that and the Parker variant time to upgrade from the Walmart Van Der Hagen

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  5 лет назад

      @@josephblurton3793 The Emperor gives a very smooth shave. I used it this morning (due to your comments/questions) and did a three-pass shave. The third pass was at setting three using the straight bar. A real nice cleanup to a shave that was done in two passes. But, that third pass was for enjoyment and got things a bit smoother.:) A great shave. Six hours later as I type this and still a smooth result.:)
      So perhaps it comes down to asymmetrical razor head or symmetrical razor head. Knurling. Weight. TTO or two-piece.

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  5 лет назад

      Two completely different razors. The Godfather is a mild razor whose razor head is based on the classic Gillete Tech razor. The Emperor is an adjustable razor with a dual head.
      They shave differently.
      I'll use the Emperor for my daily shave. the dual hed allows me to fine tune the shave as i go. The adjustment allows me to turn up the aggression if I'm using amild blade or turn down to a milder setting.
      But for those times that I need a mild shave that is set at one level, I'll go with the Godfather or Chieftain Jr. The Godfather also has the advantage of enclosing the ends of the razor blade. A nice feature. It means won't accidentally tag myself when flipping from one side to the other. I appreciated that when first starting out with the wet shave.
      both the Emperor and Chieftain Jr. expose the end tabs. Not a deal-breaker, just a different razor head design. Again, personally, I like when the end tabs are enclosed.:)
      Also, the Godfather's shave can be deceptive. Sure, it's a mild razor, but if I do three passes and use a sharp blade (think Feather), I get a beautiful BBS shave.:)
      Now that you've brought it up, I'm setting aside the Godfather for tomorrow morning's shave.:)
      Again, two different razors with different designs and two different ways to approach the wet shave. It all depends on how you wish to approach your shave.
      If you're leaning towards doing a little bit of safety razor collecting, then you probably have your answer.:)

    Have another question about the emperor if you happen to catch this. What's it like at a "1" setting? Is it super mild like a godfather? Pretty mild like a chieftain Jr? Or medium like a chieftain? I reached out to vikings blade last week but I still haven't heard back. Last time I had a question they responded right away- might have fallen through the cracks.

      Rich, at a 1 setting, I can go againt the grainonthe corners of my mouth with no problem. so, I'd say it's super mild but still offers some minute blade feel. TBH, I haven't recently shaved with it at that low a setting. I'm going from memory. You've given me a good reason to break it out and have a shave. I love the razor!

      @@MarkSzorady Thanks. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on it. Been a while since I used an adjustable bc the heads are too clunky for my trouble spots but this head seems pretty maneuverable and I really would like to have the kind of flexibility in my shave only an adjustable can offer. I've been so impressed with VB but am always left wanting just a little more. The Godfather head is amazing but the handle shape is limiting when I don't have the time or energy to use a lot of finesse. Chieftain Jr. is fantastic- just wish it were a little heavier. Chieftain 5bc is my current champ for 2 pass shaves but it's slightly too aggressive for 3 passes on my skin. Hoping the Emperor will be, as the name suggests, an end-all be-all. Hi, Dark Side83. Sounds like it's just a reset issue. Here's the instructions from Robert at Vikings Blade. (He answered this question on their amazon product page):
      "This phenomenon is not a defect and can be fixed easily. It will happen to all adjustable razors including the legendary Gillette Slim Adjustable - when the user forgets to set the baseplate to maximum aggression and then open the butterfly doors.
      The instruction leaflet says only open the butterfly doors when the aggression is set to max. Perhaps you missed that part.
      Not a big issue! This can be reset easily.
      First, turn the adjustment knob so that the knob is at the lowest position (maximum aggression).
      Then, reset the baseplate as instructed in the below video:
      ruclips.net/video/Ou2A29U4qKk/видео.html
      Baseplate will now drop back to where it should be.
      Then you can now turn the adjustment knob back as usual :)
      If it doesn’t work, try reset the baseplate again a couple of times. This is something that all springload adjustable razors will experience- but it’s an extremely easy fix."

      Are you speaking of the cutting edge of the blade or the blade ends? If it's blade alignment (cutting edge), try a couple of different blades. When blades are mass produced, there may be a variation in size..a slight variation. Some blade brands may be thicker than usual or sometimes the rail hole is slightly larger than what it should be. Just a smidgen. This can cause the blade to move around inside the head before the doors are closed. But, so far, I've not had any alignment issues. the blade ends might be uneven due to the rail hole thing, etc.
      Vikings Blade has some really terrific customer service. Maybe snap a photo or two to show them the issue.

    How is this better than a MingShi ($12) or a Gillette Slim ($25)??

    • @MarkSzorady
      @MarkSzorady  5 лет назад +1

      Well, I'm preparing a video where I weigh various razors. I can tell you that the Emperor weighs in at a whopping 4.67 ounces. That's head and shoulders above anything else I've tried. The weight and heft is wonderfully balanced and feels quite substantial and controlled in the hand. With this heft, the shave is simply effortless. The weight of the razor, coupled with the dual head (which allows you to tune your shave even a bit more) gives you a really smooth shave, IMHO.:)
      Having said this, I have both the MingShi and a couple of Gillette Slims. My MingShi is actually called the QShave. Same razor, different brand name. My QShave is quite good, but it does lack the extra weight I've become accustomed to. And the blade alignment is ever so slightly off. Not deal breakers, to be sure. A nice razor. Some wet shavers have reported that the their MingShi/QShave razors have glaring blade alignment issues. Mine does not. However, at $12.00, what have you go to lose? If interested in shaving with a Merkur Futur, the MingShi/QShave could be a good test drive to see if the size, shape, geometry, etc. is a good fit. A Futur is upwards of $75.00 for a chrome plated model and $114.00 for gold. With a MingShi/QShave, chances are pretty good that you'll get a razor that works well and gives you a fine shave.:) If not, you’re only out 12 bucks and not 75.:)
      As for the Gillette Slim, I think every wet shaver needs to get at least one of these in their shave toolbox. (And if your interest in wet shaving is growing in the direction of collecting, etc., you’re going to have MANY razors.:)) The Slim is a terrific razor, no doubt. It’s also nostalgic, cool, and a big part of wet shaving history. But $25.00? Well, if you can find one in good condition for that price, you're quite lucky. I've seen the price for the Gillette Slim climb as the traditional wet shave explodes. On Ebay, generally speaking, a Slim in good condition is $35.00 to $45.00. In excellent condition, they come in at $60.00 and up. If we were having this discussion three years ago, chances were good that you could get the same Slim, in excellent condition, at a lower price. Now, the landscape has changed and I think sellers know this.
      This is not to say that you cannot find a Slim at the price you quoted. You can, if you look. I’d also encourage you to visit yard sales, estate sales, etc. Chances are very good that you’ll find a Slim in good condition at a reasonable price. The question is simply, WHEN?
      You can purchase, right now, brand new, the Vikings Blade Emperor. A high quality, heavy weight, fat handled, adjustable razor built exceedingly well from premium materials at an affordable price point which will last for years to come and give you exceptional shaves, IMHO.:)
      Regardless of which path you choose, the bottom line is, it’s a great time to be doing the traditional wet shave! Vikings Blade (and others) offer so many choices! You’re bound to find a razor that suits your wallet and person.:)
