This is from 2009. I remember being in my very 1st apartment by myself with no family and nobody around on Christmas. My main comfort was the local PBS channel that ran things like this and live plays. It was abt 11pm and I was sitting in my living room watching this performance and I started to cry. My 1st Christmas as an adult and all alone. I always think about that moment 15 years ago.
My GOD! How Beautiful is this Music and this Choir? I am am totally swept away by this Video. I cannot stop watching. And, who is the Beauty playing the flute in the intro? I love this music!!!!! Awesome!!!!!
I can't hope to adequately express the joy that the choirs of St. Olaf have brought to my life. Dr. Armstrong and his music department members prepare them brilliantly and watching the students as they sing is a delight. Thanks for posting this.
A beautiful performance. If these are different choirs coming together for the concert, then the seamless sound produced by their joining together is even more impressive. The slower and quieter last stanza is movingly rendered. The camerawork and video edit are sympathetic and polished and add to the pleasure.
I had the wonderful opportunity to sing under Dr. Armstrong for AL All state a long time ago and I'll never forget how passionate he was to share his love of music to us. So impressed with him!
How wonderful that Dr Armstrong is again directing the St. Olaf choir! It is a long time to wait to see these wonderful concerts. Thank you for making them available. Your music shines!
Have not watched this video for quite sometime. I thought that I could break the 'habit', but I am hooked! Even after the prolonged absence, this performance has become more beautiful. I absolutely love this video. And, the flute player in the beginning is still beautiful too.
While the intro slightly distracts the focus against the actual music, the intro does contain some very interesting reasoning for singing this particular music. Seeing some of the singers 'feel' the music is so powerful. Especially when they move, and use facial expressions. Dr. Armstrong and his music department members have done a wonderful job preparing everyone! And the singers really convey how music can affect everyone, musical or not. Good job to everyone who participated. The orchestra does a good job of not overwhelming the choirs too. The rests that occur right around 5min 30 seconds into the song are truly spectacular. Having that many people all stop and start together is hard, especially without holding the music, but it is executed perfectly!
Within a few days we will sing this song with our small men's choir in a small church in Ellecom-Holland. It is a unknown caroll in Holland. I wonder what our audience will say!
We have to stop this brainwashing with heavenly sounds that remove us further from the cold stable with only straws plus human closeness for warmth like what refugees from war zones have to endure. These sounds make us feel what heaven would feel like. It further anaesthetized us from compassionate empathy…. make us feel good ! Prokofiev's concertos and other war zone music have reported differently. This we hope is the end game, they in those zones are not even in mid-game yet and see only the endless pit and abyss of dying, starvation and unbelievably unbearable cold !

I was a student at St Olaf In 1961-62. It is nice that the vocal tradition has continued.
The most beloved Christmas gift, enjoying one of your concerts, bravo bravo bravo congrats, wishing you a great winter season of celebrations❤🎉❤
This is one of the most beautiful choir arrangements that I have ever heard. I absolutely love this❤❤❤❤

This is one of the best if not the best mass youth choirs I have listened to. Simply beautiful.
Do not think I would call college students youths.

Beautifully done in praise to Jesus Christ!
From a simple ox's stall came the greatest gift of all. Truth and love and hope abide, this Christmastide.
Just beautiful. One of the best renditions of this I have ever heard.

This carol was written for and first performed by the legendary operatic soprano Jessye Norman, who died in 2019.
I would love to hear this carol performed by Meav of Celtic Woman fame.
Beautiful.

This song expresses the true meaning of Christmas.
The final Verse sends chills down my spine every time I hear it.
Please update your title of the video to be "Christmastide at St. Olaf College". :)
Dan, was this the director that we attended?
It's St. Olaf, as in St. Olaf College, not St. Olaf's.
Eric Short Thank you.
The only thing missing here is Jessye Norman.
😊

we could do without the Intro
Please, don't speak for me.
WTF is a "Christmastide" ?
way too bouncy. listen to the American Boychoir for a much better sound.
L' une est berceuse l' autre est fête, tout dépend de l' émotion dont "on" a besoin dans l' instant
