  • Would you like to find your version of Mac OS X running on your computer via the Command Line using the Terminal App?
In this video, we show you 3 ways to do this. It’s very useful if you’re booted into Single User mode, or if you have to login to another Mac remotely and use the command Line to determine the version of Mac OS X.
Also, if you have connected a Mac to yours via Target Disk Mode or have an external drive that’s not booted, you can use the 3rd method to find the version of Mac OS X that’s loaded on that drive.
The Commands that you’ll need for today’s video are:
    1: sw_vers
    2: system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType
    3: defaults read loginwindow SystemVersionStampAsString

If I'm using an iMac with running macOS Big Sur 11.5.2 in the terminal in recovery mode, system_profiler SPHardwareDataType doesn't work for me. I can still use sw_vers though. Any suggestions for getting system_profiler to work in the recovery mode terminal?

And I still cannot update from 12.10.6. App store says nothing available....have followed independent advice but no joy!
