I think the PS2 "The Third Place" slogan was talking about a special place away from work/school and other daily activities. That the PS2 was its own special place where you can relax and let your mind go.
Maybe not everybody knows this: the director of the first ad is the same of this Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy (official video) 1080p HD and this Rubber Johnny by Chris Cunningham & Aphex Twin (1080p HD) , two demented collaborations with Aphex Twin, and the reason why Sony decided to produce this one. Respect for those geniuses.
I remember the David Lynch ad vaguely, but I'm sure I also remember at the PS2 logo at the end, hearing a kid's voice-over shohuting, "PS2! WELCOME TO THE THIRD PLACE!"
Fraser had to dwell through the bottom of the internet, through countless hours of horseporn to find the color version of David Lynch's PS2 commercial.
I'm just gonna say, all the commercials in this slot were amazing and probably among my favorites of all time, and I thank Fraser for showing them to me, even if he was sort of an asshole about them. (That's why I love him anyway)
I wish there was more bold advertising these days. I understand that some products, like ensurance or medicine, have to be presented in a trustworthy way, but the vast majority of ad campaigns for stuff that doesnt matter, like food or entertainement electronics, have no business being as boring as they are
There are two main ideas why they went with the "The Third Place" idea. The first is kinda obvious: Playstation, PSOne, Playstation 2 = The Third Place. The other is that it was supposed to be the gateway to another world, a realm of immersion where you could be whatever you wanted to be. The Third Place.
With regards to the Lynch commercial, I think it's really quite tongue in cheek. Like Deacon said, it's more like he's parodying himself than anything else. I kinda like when people take marketing and treat it with utter contempt, why Sony went ahead and released it as a commercial for Playstation once they had it though I have no idea.
Oh and the Wolfman advert is just awesome in every way. No idea what's wrong with that one, it makes sense, with Playstation 2 you can be whatever you want to be simple message translated in a very interesting way.
I love Deacon's stages of reaction to the final commercial. 9:13 Surprise and intrigue. 9:16 Sceptical. 9:23 What the fuck? 9:27 Okay...what's this? 9:46 Oh god, this is actually sad? 9:48 Poor guy, got chopped in half. ;( 9:54 Seriously, fuck you, you had a good set up going and everything. I would've watched it. 9:59 Paralysed. 10:02 Eyes widen. 10:04 What...the...fuck... 10:12 Oh, right then, back to being comedic relief!
wait wait wait.... i think everybody is missing something Frasher said he found "The bottom of the internet".... QUICK everybody we must look for such a place D: does it exist... WE MUST FIND IT

"I am the Wolfman" is the greatest thing I've witnessed on RUclips.
I wish there was more bold advertising these days.

That girl at the first commercial looks like an alien version of Becky.
That last commercial was awesome!
Just the last one?
No, but it was my favorite.
WHERE CAN I FIND IT?!
I really want to play a game in the style of the Wolfman commercial. Friggin rocked.
When that alien girl was showed, the first thing that it reminded me of was the Aerials music video with the boy.
Good on Kyle for getting the Arthur Brown audio clip in the last commercial.
The last commercial of this video, where can I find it???
That last ad was like a Prodigy music video or something.
I'm scared and confused and feel like I wandered into an off broadway play.
Everyone's faces at 10:02 hahaha
and the ps2 went on to become the best selling video games console of all time, with around 150 million units sold....the power of david lynch!
that alien girl was a playstation ad ?
I remember seeing it in the cinema and it creeped me out as a kid.
the jacob lynch ps thing was like jaccups ladder or the twilght zone i mean holy shit
I...don't even remember these commercials for the PS2 >.>
I bed he had to dig past the "Mr. T Ate My Balls" meme to find some of these.
what happened to awesome video games
Ah, I LOVE Chris Cunningham's work. Such a twisted mind.
That dog was having a nightmare!
There's no reason for him to take his glasses for, because YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE HIS EYES THROUGH THE GLASSES
wait wait wait.... i think everybody is missing something Frasher said he found "The bottom of the internet".... QUICK everybody we must look for such a place D: does it exist... WE MUST FIND IT
I FOUND IT I found the promised Land D: it's full of nothingness D: help me 'm scared
I've never understood this idea of not showing game footage to sell video games.
I feel violated...
STOOOOOOOOP! Nightmares!
The real world (1st), your mind (2nd), gaming world (3rd). Solved.
Im not gonna lie. That was pretty fucking creepy...
Wtf
and calling the ps2 the third place when it is in a 3 console race.....not good
