  • Dental enamel, a highly mineralised substance of the tooth, is the hardest tissue in the body; but why is it more susceptible to degradation compared to bones? Once a dental cavity is formed, can it self-repair?

    Thanks for sharing. If a tooth does not contain any cell, why would a tooth keep on growing?

    • @DrViolette
      @DrViolette  3 года назад +3

      Our teeth are formed by a complex process called dentogenesis- basically embryonic cells differentiate into specialised cells to lay down minerals which ultimately become the tooth. This is why our tooth enamel are mainly minerals and do not contain any cells.

      In simpler terms, a tooth enamel is made by cells, but those cells do not reside within the tooth enamel! 😉

    There's research to show that teeth can heal with root providing minerals also to keep ph constantly. A cracked tooth can heal with mineral interaction with root system.

    Doesn't enamel grow back if you ain't eating sugars as soon as a cavity forms large enough to hit the nerve endings the nerve endings in your tooth send out signals to produce an enzyme to regrow a thin layer of enamel back over the dentan.

    Can a little bit broken teeth heal itself?

    • @DrViolette
      @DrViolette  3 года назад

      Usually if part of the tooth has already broken off, it cannot heal itself by regrowing what was lost. Remineralisation is only possible when the tooth mineral content is altered but not broken.

    Then, how does permanent teeth grow then?
    I mean, kids have both permanent and primary teeth growing at the same time.
    Permanent teeth, in deed grow and as they grow they slowly acquire the bone material of the primary teeth.
    If permanent teeth grow, why could not another teeth grow after them?

    • @Theyseemederp1n
      @Theyseemederp1n Год назад

      Short answer; they're already there. Longer answer; the perminant teeth are actually inside the skull. As they age, they push themselves into the mouth to replace the baby ones. If you check out an xray of a child's skull, you can actually see them above/below where their baby teeth are. Kinda spooky but cool at the same time lol.

    Hi, can you please do a video on best and safest toothpaste? I heard the fluoride is toxic and causes breast cancer and long term side affects. Or can you just reply to this comment on your thoughts? Thank you.

    • @DrViolette
      @DrViolette  3 года назад +1

      Hi there, fluoride is a mineral found in our bones and teeth. It's also naturally found in water, soil, plants, rocks etc.
      In appropriate low doses, fluoride is very safe even for consumption and has the benefit of strengthening teeth. It is proven by various international health organisations. And this is why the public water supply in many countries are treated with low concentration of fluoride.
      The toxicity of fluoride is only true when the concentration is extremely high. Same goes for any other mineral as well. Anything in excess is not good.
      We are very unlikely to have access to such high concentrations because the fluoride content in toothpaste and water is very low and hence, safe.
      There is no "best" or "safest" toothpaste. But I will recommend any toothpaste with adequate amount of fluoride. Hope that helps! :D

    • @DrViolette

      Translucent tips are actually normal. For the white spots, you could get resin infiltration done at the dentist. If that doesn’t work and the white spots are severe, you can consider composite or porcelain veneers.
