This game had a bit of a tough development cycle. If I recall correct, Yoshitaka announced to Konami he was planning on leaving the company before development even began on the game. Konami gave him full freedom to do what he wanted with the third game but he just didn't really have it in him anymore. He agreed to split directors roles on this entry and stay until the end, but he did end up leaving just a few months before development ended and had his name removed from the credits as a result. He wasn't happy with large scale game development at the time, and felt chaining himself to large corporations was standing in the way of what he wanted to do in life, so he left to do more freelance work.
Kind of gotta appreciate the guy for that. He wasn't interested in doing more than he felt was necessary with a series and just getting a paycheck.
If only konami felt the same.

Reading the manga Suikoden III: The Successor of Fate is better than playing the game itself. It's truly one of the best game adaptions in any medium I've seen, for it takes the plot and characters from the game and actually does them better. If you want to have an enjoyable experience just go for the manga.

  • @ShadowWolfRising
    @ShadowWolfRising 5 лет назад +22

    Another fun fact, several characters you recruit are kids or relatives of previous Stars;
Hugo's mom was an ally of Highland in 2, that's the same Lucia (And given some research, apparently that during the war is WHEN HE WAS CONCEIVED. She apparently was at least early in her pregnancy during her boss fight.).
Belle is clearly Meg from Suikoden 2's daughter (And thus Grandniece of Juppo from Suikoden 1.), it's never confirmed, but why else would she have Gadget Z?
Sanae Y (The Y is short for Yamamoto, guessing they didn't have enough room in either game for it.) is the daughter of Freed and Yoshino from Suikoden 2.
The Bath guy Goro is heavily implied to be Tetsu's (From Suikoden 2.) son.
Nash in this game is the Protagonist of the Japan only Suikogaiden games (They take place during and after 2.), and that wife he keeps mentioning? Never confirmed who it is 100%, but the most likely one? Sierra from 2. Yeah, THAT Sierra, the VAMPIRE. It's possible he himself is one during this game, but that's mere conjecture.
It's Theorized Ace was the Generic Soldier back in Suikoden 2 who set up and runs the Rock Climbing Mini-Game.
Emily is daughter of Ronnie Bell and Mose (Characters from Suikoden 1.).
Max is the Grandson of Don Quixo- I mean Maximilian from Suikoden 1 and 2 (Rico may be the Granddaughter of Sancho, but that's mere conjecture.).
Sharon is the daughter of Milia from Suikoden 1 (I think this is actually said when recruiting her though.).
Then of course, there's mainstays who have been in every numbered title, Jeanne and Viki.
For the former........no one knows what the fuck her deal is, but given's Kid's investigation of either her or Koroku (Forget which), Koroku knows something about her no one else does (Including us, the players, and even people who are obsessed with the series.). Koroku being a dog has no means of vocalizing this information much to our dismay, Jeanne even warning the dog (Possibly jokingly, possibly not.) Raura from 2 might know something, but that's conjecture.
Viki is easier to explain, She sneezes after each game ends and instantly goes to the next one. She actually experiences the games in the same order the players do, as her sneezes don't just teleport her through space, but time as well, as a result she's the same age in each game.
I love that this series has such continuity to it......something more games in the genre laugh at the idea of what with most JRPG sequels just hopping to new settings or going so far into the past or future that it hardly matters.

This actually the reason why I disagree when people said that suikoden III is a standalone game... Unlike II, IV, and V, III depend it's characterization a lot on previous suikoden games. Without it, most characters, except the main characters and their friends, would have no characterization at all...

It would require incredible dexterity and precision to set up the Mountain Climbing Mini game.
While in Vinay De Zexay in the begining of Chapter 1 of Geddoe's story, Ace said he served under Gilbert during the Dunan Unification wars (Suikoden 2's Story.).
Ace is very skilled when he's not focused on women and drink.
And it's very in his personality to set something like that up.
All of those together make it a popular fan theory.

I think you hit the nail on the head.
I always thought of Suikoden 3 as an experiment. An experiment with the sweetest opening intro of all time. It tried to do something ambitious by breaking it up into three paths, but the story did suffer without continuity. Since the narrative wasn't all that strong to begin with, they really needed to stick with one path so that you could get invested in one person's journey and the 107 people he met along the way.
Instead, you end up with three characters that don't feel particularly well-developed.
    Suikoden IV is... Unique.
If you thought this one strayed from the path, you ain't seen nothing, yet.😄 It's not all bad. Actually, I enjoyed it, myself. I've always enjoyed stories that take place on the high seas, so I'm sure that contributed.
Having said that, just a heads up, the Rune at the center of Suikoden 4 may actually be the most interesting in the entire series. It's worth playing just to see how wide the spectrum is, when it comes to True Runes and the consequences they carry.
Most of the call backs are historical (the story takes place centuries before Suikoden 1 & 2). However, without revealing too much, expect one HUMONGOUS call back in the Suikoden 4 roster.
Whenever you get around to playing it, I look forward to seeing your review.

Take a moment to read the manga, It's totally worth it, Makes up for the story and will change you mind on this game. I honestly think that part of the reason why this one wasn't as easy to relate to and enjoy is that it was the first 3D Suikoden game. The manga will fill in what wasn't fleshed out.

I can't agree with the manga changes my mind on the game. The game is still poorly executed. I like to review what is given to me. If the manga adds to it, that's great! ...But I want to see what this game is about. What information this game gives me. This stand alone game. (No hate on the manga, I'm sure it's great)

  • @moosobold
    @moosobold 5 лет назад +4

I really liked III, it's tied with II for my favorite, but your criticisms are absolutely accurate and fair. As someone else mentioned, the manga adaptation for the game is one of the best out there; it really delves into pretty much every issue relating to the story that you listed. The big events have the weight that they should, the main characters are given more depth and development, and the antagonist's motives are both explained better and spread through the story instead of being shoved in at the end. Some events are changed entirely to make more sense in a story telling context (Hugo vs Sasarai at Chisha, for example. Why Sasarai would pack up his toys and go home after being roughed up by an obvious imposter is beyond me.) I recommend it if you enjoy manga, it's a good read and feels more like a Suikoden title than the game itself does. I'm definitely with you on friendly fire and the repetitive aspects of the gameplay too, bleh.
But the most important thing I got from your review is that I'm not alone in liking the ducks and disliking the antagonist in his previous series appearances, haha!
Good luck with IV, it's a slog and a half, but V is worth it!

I am still surprised how well done the story interwines with the different points of view and how you totally miss out on information and everything even though it definitely is not the best story. Spot on. I for one, love the diversity of Suikoden's characters, and I actually think this had some of my favorite designs in the series...But it's so dry sometimes. It's hard to get into, as opposed to the first two which are a lot less "gamey". This one feels like a game, not a story. It's definitely WAY harder than the other games, in my opinion, but it doesn't really add to any accomplishment. 6.5/10 is the perfect score for this. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! I will always be a strong defender of III. I acknowledge and understand a lot of its flaws, and the problems people have, but I think the story was absolutely wonderful. Perfect? No. But to me, I was enthralled every single second. Also, no one seems to ever give the game credit for its shot composition. Despite the game's limitations, they utilized the different angles and camera positions to tell a really cinematic story. There are literally countless amounts of shots where you can analyze its composition, and how it relates to the story and characters in that moment. Criticize the graphics all you want, but I think it's really impressive how they were able to creatively use shot composition in a game from 2002.
    4:12 is a great example.

Thanks for the video, I didn't know about this channel so I subbed due to it.
I like 3 more every time I play it. I streamed 1-5 this year and really enjoyed 1-3 the most. 2's the best, but 5 is really good. But yeah, I think 3 requires both the perfect order of chapters for 1-3 and just accepting that it's not trying to be like 1 and 2. It's pretty cool on its own and really does feel better on replays. It's really a game about how no one perspective is true and you have to look at all of them together to get closer to the truth of its story.
There are so many great moments in the story, even if it isn't as good as 2's, that I think it's the 2nd best Suikoden story. I think 5 is really good, but after playing through 1-5 this year, I'll just say that 5's definitely not capable of rivaling 2. But the low of Suiko 4 makes Suiko 5 feel like an all time high. IMO anyway, 3 gets better on replays, and 5 doesn't really improve. 5 doesn't get worse, either, though, so it's still really good.
I think the group I liked the most in 3 is Geddoe's mercs, because the bickering and joking with Ace, Joker, and Queen always entertained me. Geddoe was a pretty cool mysterious stranger type as well, and I liked how Jacques and Aila's friendship grew. As a group they felt the most developed. But out of all the Suiko casts, I think 3 might have my favorite overall since you get to know so many of them compared to the others. That's one of the strengths of the three viewpoints. You get a lot of time with those characters, so they get to develop personalities beyond a lot of other Suikoden characters.
Apparently they had a lot more game planned for Chapter 4 on, but had to cut it. I think that's why Chapter 4 and 5 feel pretty rough. Like seriously, 2/3 of the game is before you pick the Flame Champion. But all that said, I feel like the villain in 3 deserves a bit more credit. He isn't a madman like Luca because you can't top that character. So 3's villain is someone more sympathetic. If you get all 108 SoD, you get more of his story in a bonus viewpoint. It's true he isn't developed as much in this game, but since he's in 1 and 2, you already got to know him a bit there. I think if Chapters 4 and 5 weren't cut so short we would've gotten to understand his motivations better than we do and he would've seemed more sympathetic, even if his plans were awful. But one thing I like about Suikoden 1-3 is they have villains you can sympathize with, among the bloodthirsty psychos.

I never finished 5. Stopped mid way because i felt really bored.. i think its because of 4, and 5 isnt really great. Its least worse than 4, but still bad for me.
4 i played to the end, until the last place and didnt bother to really finish.
1,2,3 is my favorite. And i agree with you abt 3.
3 is different, but it definitely is great for me. I’ve replayed 3 as many as number 2. And i got quite attached with 3 so much. Sometimes i want the story to be longer, because its really short if you combined all 3 character’s story together. Its different from 1 and 2 but really charming for me. And look at the opening scene. Opening scene of 2 is really really great, but opening scene for 3 is on a different scale. I always get hyped when i listen to it.
1 is really great and the complete version of 1 is 2.

I have to disagree. I loved III and remember playing it multiple times. I actually liked the focus on the elemental runes and did not find them boring at all. I LOVED the skill system, enjoyed the strategy battles, Magic was great, and I did form a connection to the main characters, except maybe for Hugo. The story did have some pacing issues, but I was engaged. I thought the difficulty level was great (and differentiated between the 3 POVs). I also don’t know why, but I really fell in love with Sasarai in that game.
I was in college when I first played it, so I may be looking at it through rose tinted glasses, but I put in tons of hours grinding magic rings and stat stones and getting characters to 99. I loved the epilogue too. (Though why on earth did spoiler female character have a flowing dune permanently attached to her head, so she couldn’t use a pale gate rune with her S skill???? (Yep, I still remember that 15 years later lol))
The only weak points that jump to mind are Thomas’ chapters and some of the needless running running back and forth. II and V obviously had better stories and are the better games. I will say that III’s skill system is still my favorite and found magic users better than in V. (Though Vicki was finally great in V! 🤓)
Now this makes me want to replay them all! (Except IV. I don’t think I’ll ever replay that one.j

Suikoden III has grown on me over the years. Still all of your criticisms were spot on accurate. I found going through some of Suikogaiden at least gave me a little more interest in one or two more characters, but yeah... Nothing compared to Suikoden II.IV isn't a BAD game, but it does miss the mark on a lot of stuff. The combat method gets things back to basics... but it felt like they went too far back to basics. The story was alright, the voice acting was... not the worst I've ever heard. I actually enjoy the war battles in IV, but I know a lot of people didn't like em.I am just starting to go through V again, and it really finds a good balance on things again. I hope you enjoy IV despite it's shortfalls and feel you WILL enjoy V whenever you get around to it.All that being said, I have been consistently impressed with the quality of your videos. The editing, scripting, video clarity and camera-work. All seem like the quality I see from folks with 100k followers. You will hit 10k sooner or later, but I really am looking forward to seeing when the word finally gets out about your quality videos and you start blowing up.

I think what you said overall is accurate, but got to disagree in the antagonist part. You only need the motivation of him, because when the revelation that him is Luc from the first 2 Suikodens, you already know who he is as a character. Also you have Yuber, a go to antagonist from the previous games. If you get excited to see Futch and Bright, can't understand how that not happened with Luc.

He was born cursed? It all fell so flat. Futch you see his grow up. AND his dragon or that matter. Also, I hate Luc. As I said the only thing this game did was let me beat his ass. And I did.

I'd wanted to murder the villain of this game for most of the first two, so I was predisposed towards caring about him... and I ended up really liking how he was handled; after I had a while to think it over.
Yes, his goal will kill hundreds of thousands of people- but he still thinks he's doing good. He's pretty sure it's this or "everything everywhere dies", and he has a better chance of knowing than anyone else. He avoids collateral damage face to face- he doesn't kill you or random villagers when he easily could. Yet he starts a war as a distraction. Apparently finding out you're less a person and more a sack of organs stapled to a true rune messes you up.
Unrelatedly, I find it hilarious that, even when your main character has the physical incarnation of the source of all fire in the world attached to his/her hand, it's still more effective to just use physical attacks. The swing speed skill & Jongelur rune are simply broken.

I do think the art and pace is dull due to it being heavy scripted with Bs but the music and difficulty did make up for the dull moments going back-n forth in villages and having to smash the blue reset button on my console thanks to how hard random encounters were. I remember never finishing the game after a random encounter in the mountains that you can't walk around.
