He is hurting, Jimmy has said every time he sings this song he always feels a little bit sick because it reminds him of going home to his home town where he suffered a lot of child abuse and neglect. When he was 16,17 yrs old he joined Cold Chisel and got out of there. He lived the whole drugs, sex, rock and roll. Trying to forget where he came from and what he went through. Marriage and kids grounded him somewhat but in the last ten yrs he has finally confronted his past and come to a place of peace. It seriously is a miracle we still have him with us. This is the song that brings it all back for him.
His father liked a drink and being an ex boxer didnt mind a stink with anyone so theres alot of violence
Jimmy Barnes was born in Glascow, Scotland but grew up in Adelaide. Flame trees was written by Don Walker and actually about Walker's home town Grafton and it's famous Jacaranda trees, he substituted Flame Trees for some reason in the song.
Perhaps the best bridge ever written. The genius of Don Walker.
Most older Aussies can sing flame trees word for word
I think every time Jimmy opens his mouth he lets out just a little more of the pain and suffering he’s endured in his lifetime. And if that is correct, we still got a lot of years of Jimmy left to listen to.
❤️❤️❤️
So true
I hope so I love him so much
Legit 100% met him at the elizabeth shopping center rippa bloke
This is the Barnes family rocking from home during lockdown of Covid-19. They he dropped at least one song a day on Facebook for the Duration and because they are all so talented whoever was there got roped in to do requests from fan’s and sometimes it was just him and Jane and sometimes if the kids were home they’d join in .So the Barne’s certainly did there bit too make lockdown a bit easier for anyone who wanted to watch.🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🕺🏻💃🎸☘️
Yep, they kept me relatively sane during the loooong Melbourne Covid lockdown
Thank God for Jane and Jimmy during the pandemic!
there is only two family here , son on drums and daughter on backups
@carolcarol3938 yep, he closer to 70.
100% agree. They were lights in a very dark world in Melbourne at the time 🙏
My favourite cold chisel song. Aside from the way Jimmy delivers it, it's just a great song. When you listen to the lyrics and realise it's written about lost love, returning to your home town and trying to find something normal in life again it becomes more than just a song. The "flame trees" (popularity and stardom) will blind the best of us. This song is about remembering where you came from. Fame is great while it lasts but it will eventually end and the only thing left to keep you going is the community that helped you start.
And they couldn’t make a song “Jacaranda” 😂 since ostensibly it is about Grafton
Every Aussie knows this song 🎵 and can sing along. It truly is one of my Cold Chisel staples, and on every one of my play lists. All of their songs are 🔥 and as for Barnsey he is a top notch fella who kept us entertained every single day of the pandemic.
True …. I’m an Aussie and have grown up listening to Jimmy’s awesome songs ❤️
Jimmy said during his Working Class Boy doco that he struggled singing this song live due to the emotions of his youth and thoughts from his home town of Adelaide growing up
The suburb of Elizabeth
Roger that mate, made a few of us North Coasters think of Grafton too
That was such an eye opening doco. Never looked at flame trees the same again and I can hear the struggle now that I never did before.
Its funny because i was born a bred in Eliz fields where Jimmy talks about.. I only lived a few streets away, my Dad & then me both worked at Holdens although i left & he retired there.. My Dad also drank at the Karriwirra Hotel when Jimmy's did.. We had a great childhood, i am 52 & the youngest my sister is 60.. We would have went to the same places, the same schools etc..
Funny how only a few streets or even houses away someone else's life is so bad while yours is so great.. I know swanee a bit, done a few charity gigs with him.. He is starting to forget lyrics now sadly but the guy can still belt out some vocals, hardly needs a mic lol..
I still drive past our old houses regularly.. After 5 years travelling all around Australia i ended up buying a house not far from Elizabeth, back with the bogans where i belong 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Jimmy’s Tribute, in the beginning, to “MG” is to Michael Gudinski, an Australian music entrepreneur legend.
Sadly gone to soon, he was a 💫🤩
Classic Cold Chisel song and one of my favourites. This performance was dedicated to Michael Gudinski.
On drums is his other son @JackieJamesBarnes who is wickedly talented driving the beat for Dad! Jimmy, Jane and the whole clan desrve the keys to Australia for what they gave all of us, free of charge, during the lockdown! thanx barnes clan, and you too @TheSingerReactions for enjoying this legend so much
They literally made the Covid lockdown in Melbourne bearable! Thank you Barnes clan, from me too!!! xx
They really did!! I am so grateful to them for that. It's so nice to know others felt the same
The best Cold Chisel song imo, he;s actually singing a few notes lower than the original.

I grew up listening to Barnsey. Your reactions let me experience it fresh.
💯
Jimmy doing You’ll never walk alone earlier this year for us after the Northern Rivers’ mega flood was pretty special too
Being overseas in some bar and a Barnsey song comes on..... Every Aussie belts it out at the top of their voices and its a bloody awesome feeling.
Karaoke on my contiki the middle of Italy
As I've said before it's a moment in time song. It can bring back so many memories. That's why it's one of the most popular well known songs in Australia. Oh he's 66 and killing it.
He has an incredible vocal range.
Love this song so damn much..it's part of the soundtrack to alot of Aussie's lives. Jimmy is just absolutely Amazing..end of story ❤
Thanks my man for doing my video! ❤️
My favorite song from Jimmy Barnes.
Jimmy is 66 now , and singing flame tree's the same as when they released it in 1984.. 38 years ago!!! wow.
Flame Trees will always be my favourite Barnesy song
Like a fine wine Jimmy’s voice just gets better with age, He’s amazing!❤️
This always puts tears in my eyes, flame trees, a song about my home town. A great tribute to the great Michael Gudinski. Jimmy we love you ♡
I’m a Jamaican Scott so I feel him. And respect u have given him the cudos Jimmy deserves it. Didn’t like him for so long but love him now
I’d listen to him singing the phone book, the songs and the voice is incredible, the song writing of the time was as good as anyone worldwide
So so true Blue English staff breeder, he is one of our Aussie legends , and he truely deserves it!!! We love him to bits!!! I always make time to See him everytime he heads down under down under here in Tassie❤
Great song.
My favourite Jimmy sing ❤️
I think this was made from his home when we were all in lockdowns through covid. He was pretty prolific in getting some song out,(mostly just he & his wife) when we were in lockdowns, for the people.
This is actually my favourite Cold Chisel song. Love it!
It's so hard to pick a favourite Chisel song but I think this would be it for me. So many memories attached to it. Good choice ❤️
I’ve just planted 6 flame trees behind my house. Hoping one or two survive and grow big. Beautiful.
I love this. Best music in my life
Partly filmed in my home town of Oberon and always feels like im home when I hear this song
The less initiated just can not understand the genius that is jimmy barnes. His voice is absolutely authentically him. Can not be replicated.
It is Lachy Doley (Lachlan R "Lachy" Doley) is from my hometown, Adelaide.. Same place Jimmy grew up.. and where Cold Chisel is basically from.. and HEAPS of great Aussie bands..
Its said "Lock-ee".. Short for Lachlan (Scottish for Luke).. He is amazeballs too..
This is one of my all time favs
Nothing can kill Jimmy ! Not cocaine not alcohol and he han sing like that all day - he is FN bulletproof. He don't do the gym either .
This is his family his girls are soo talented
This is my favourite road trip song
I love this song. Definitely my favourite Chisel song, and hearing Ian Moss singing it is awesome too.
There is a flame tree in the neighbour's yard behind me and whenever it flowers I sing this song. Lol. Mind you, the flame trees around town flowered like crazy this year and I was thinking about this song for a solid 4 months there.
Jimmy just keeps getting better and better. Great tribute to the late MG.❤
Jimmy is endlessly awesome!
I saw him recently on his soul deep 30 tour where he performed a show full of soul standards. He was sensational. Don't know how he still does it.
Have you heard four walls... Brilliant my friend
‘Do you remember, nothing stopped us on the field in our day’ love that line, the writing is so good.
Top song, that. Jimmy is now 66 yrs old, so at the time this version was recorded he would have been 65.
Just in case someone hasn't posted it... "for you MG... " Is a matter of dedication to an Australin Promoter who passed recently.. Michael Gadinski...
For just ONE example....MG actually put Billy Joel on the map, when his former US label didnt really support the album...MG toured him here in OZ, and the album ranked 3 in the charts... Consider it a wake up call to the US labels.... After all , we know what happened from there..
MG was a Legend in the industry.. And Jimmy cements that.
And what a Larrikin too..
Now there's one remaining , old skool , pub rock, balls to the wall, open to all artists, finding new ones and giving them breaks... Chuggy
RIP MG..
His solo stuff in the 80s, after the initial Chisel era was when he started really playing it up with the loud rough grit. I can remember seeing a parody of him on some Comedy skit show at the time which just shows how much people noticed it was like he had started screaming all his songs. Lol i think he has found a happy medium since.
This performance, was for ANZAC DAY IN 2000, when we were all in lock down.
Organised by Michael Gudinski, since passed, in a very short time.
All down online, it was just magical.
The band is family and friends. In Jimmys home.
This is classic Aussie music at it's best, I was a 15 year old Maori boy when I arrived in Sydney from New Zealand in 1985 and his music was absolute gospel Down Under, still is.
This song always makes me tear up… I don’t know why
It’s like nostalgia in pure sonic form
I Love Jimmy Barnes he is an inspiration- he has come from a rough start in life and Music and his family is his saving grace 💜
You finally found it! Absolute banger!!!
Aussie classic this one 👌
This song speaks our lives. Small towns are hard. We didn't have his life, but we all left - different reasons, but we all go back. We're torn, so much good, so much tough.
LOVE this song!!!!
I play it LOUD and belt my heart out ❤️❤️❤️
The original recording with CG had some melancholy, angst & regret in the vocal. This version has more soul & passion...both good, but just different
Flame trees is hands down one of my fave Chisel songs 🙌 Cold Chisel is 100% an Australia Institution 🇦🇺 👌 🙌
My absolute favourite Chisel song. It still makes me cry when I hear it ♥️♥️
Iconic song, helps create memories of anyone's past, whatever those memories may be
Seen Jimmy several times in Glasgow over the years, hearing him belt out flame trees and stone cold and others, still gives me chills thinking about it. #rocknsoul
I just love this song🤗❤️ just makes me think of driving home along the country road and seeing the flame trees❤️ love it🤗 jimmy was born the same year as me, he still sounds unreal😃 I wish I had his energy. I did go to see him in concert at Nambucca Heads when U was in my 30's. He was fabulous😃🌏🪐🍀🙏🌕👣🇦🇺🌸🦋⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🦉🏡🌴❤️
Just bought myself some tickets for the Jimmy Barnes concert in December.... So excited to see him perform... Can't wait to see him sing my fav song... Flame trees... 😁
Classic that get better everytime he performs it!
This is an Aussie anthem xxx
I have a flame tree in my backyard and when I look at it I think of Barnsey , Chisel and Farnsey as well
yup the doley brothers their is 2....lachy(lock..key)..abd Clayton both play i. jimmys band normally...saw them all about 3 weeks ago for the soul deep 30 tour in New zealand
Remember he sang "Flame Trees" with Keith Urban,
Jimmy’s best track tbh 🤘🏽 Seen this live so many times 🥹
You need to react to jimmy and fam performing from home during mellbourne lockdown, his videos jimmy family did was high moment of the day plus jimmy sings plenty sings from other artists, Jane is also amazing, im hoping you do a reaction to these videos! Jimmy is just so amazing and talent his family have is amazing
finally you're doing my favourite song by Jimmy/Chisel!
His daughter Mahalia is mad talented too 💕
All time favourite
Love love love this song.
Lay down you guns by jimmy is amazing. Especially if you like a good vocal belt
Can't quite tell if it is Lochie or Clayton Doley. Both are brilliant and Jimmy knows this all to well. If Lochie is not available then Clayton plays, vice versa. Love ém both. Imagine how their parents feel!!
You make me appreciate our most iconic songs, and some of our best artists in a whole new light. Thank you!
Cold Chisel's entire catalogue is for sale for US$500 million if you've got the money
My #1 song of all time! Thanks for covering Nic! 😀👍
Your smile 😂❤😂❤
💞💞💞 My favourite Jimmy song, thank you!!
Yay another one of my favorites lol they're all my favorites. Thank you 🙏
Brother you need to do " When your love is gone ", it's Jimmy, love your work brother thanks.
Another awesome reaction! 💜
Only 2 years ago! He’s STILL amazing!
That is Lachey (pronounced lockey) Doley on keys. He is an awesome performer in his own right. He is about to tour Uk and Europe for part two of his tour (he’s just completed the first leg).
Aye, Jimmy!
You've gotta hear the original!! So good!!
“He’s belting for Jesus…” haha, great turn of phrase!
Love your tribute to Jimmy Barne’s music . You should check out his cover of “The Dark End of the Street”.. Simply beautiful
Thank you for your reactions.. very entertaining.
Jimmy is well loved in Australia, but for a different take on this song if you're not so into 'rock', try listening to the versions of this song by Sarah Blasko or Scott Matthew (my personal fav). They give you a wonderful appreciation of the talent behind the songwriting. Peace x
My favourite Chisel song.
If you haven't checked out Jessica Mauboy yet, you should, she's a singer and actress
My fav singers on esrth are Jimmy, Richard Marx and Bryan Adams.
You need to go back to and check out the biffos from the 70's and 80's... 6 points if you get it through the big sticks in the middle, 1 point on either side, if you kick it over the boundary line on the full, it's either a throw in or a free. 50 metre penalty is when you do a high tackle around the head or if you pin someone's arms when you go for a tackle... Collingwood are the rednecks of our game, but I'm stoked you got to see Buddy Franklin get swamped on his 1000th goal! He was the same guy at the start of your video in the Hawthorn Brown and Gold 😂 I was trying to understand NFL, apparently I'm supposed to go for Atlanta Dogs 💁🏼♀️ it's tricky trying to explain codes between countries
I'm not certain but I'm pretty sure that you don't need a filter on anything Jimmy does from his home.
Nobody can cover Jimmy!
Jimmy is 66 😂 so 65 in this clip!!!!
These are his wife, children, and inlaws in his living room
