I find the issue of Mav being just a Captain to be a contrived issue as presented in the movie, but there is a deeper matter to consider. I left the Air Force after 5 years as a Captain. Yet Mav was a still a Captain after how many years? What gives? No need for concern. Note that a Captain in the Air Force, Army and Marines is an O-3 the same as a Lieutenant in the Navy (Mav's rank in the previous movie). A Captain in the Navy is an O-6 the same as a full bird Colonel in the Air Force. If you are an O-6 you are considered to be a very high rank with significant authority and importance. The O-6 rank is not easy to achieve and I came into contact some extremely impressive Colonels in the Air Force. To become a flag rank of a General or Admiral is very rare and often involves some politicking or political connections. Navy Captains and Air Force Colonels are very hands on. They command ships, bases, wings and brigades. They can be responsible for from 1,000 to over 5,500 personnel. So if you are curious a to why Mav is still just a Captain it is most likely he either didn't kiss enough backside, pissed someone off, or was more focused on actually accomplishing something. A perfect real world example is Colonel John Richard Boyd of the Air Force. His story can be found in the book "Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War" by Robert Coram. It is a great read. Boyd used to remark that you can either become someone (high rank) or can do something (accomplish something important). But you can't do both. (For those who are interested there are a few U-Tube videos on Colonel Boyd.)

However, a Navy Captain (Colonel O6 in the Army or Marine Corps) can serve over 30 years until mandatory retirement but most retired at 30 years of service since retirement pay tops at 30 years and 3/4 of active duty pay (a nice piece of change). Anyway, very few officers get to be O-6's and from that pool even less get to be of flag rank (there is also a lot of political maneuvering involved). Retirement at the Navy Captain rank is to be admired since Maverick was at a rank that qualified him to command air groups, or an aircraft carrier but an officer may not want to be admiral because of the type of jobs he may prefer. Combat or test pilot beats being a desk jokey for most and being a staff officer at high levels is a most for further promotion but a fighter pilot of Maverick's psychological disposition would shun such duty which would further piss higher rank personnel.

Watch one of his newer/ current interviews. He explains some stuff concerning the movie and the only way he would consider doing this new top gun. Also how and where they trained since they are actually in the air quite a bit in this one. You can do a search and pull them up. I really was not to interested in this movie until I saw who they worked with and all the actors went through to prepare. I have not seen it yet,but I do plan on it now. Look up how they trained. It gave me respect for them all.
Regarding dustup about a Navy Captain version of Maverick in today's world/this movie. Every rule has its exceptions. Mandatory retirement dates...like the 30 years of service for 0-6s (Navy Captains or other Services' Colonels)...can be overridden by exceptions due to the unique qualifications of the individual. Essentially, if the person is still capable of doing the job, that few or no others can do, then the Service may grant a waver to the mandatory retirement rule. That being said...Top Gun was 1986, and Maverick was a Navy Lieutenant (other service's Captain), which means he would have been a butter bar (Navy Ensign, other Services' Second Lieutenant) around 1980-1982ish. This means Maverick's 30 of service would be 2010-2012 ish...not 2021 or 2022. This also applies to Iceman being a Flag officer. He's too old, too, if you follow the timeline established by the release date of the movies. But seriously, if you are watching the movie, and concerned about the real-world retirement system...you must really not like flying.
That's disputed, Cunningham thinks he's the one. But there are others who fit the bill more. Cunningham was a said to be a bit of a self promoting piece of work.
Ok, y'all. Here is the thing that I can't even over; Maverick is a fictional character, which means nothing about him is, by definition, truthful. He is made up, pretend, not real. I do know that fictional characters can PORTRAY truth, and even teach powerful lessons about truth, but the character himself has no "untold truth" the way the video is presenting it. He is not real.
Who caresbif it was not suppose to be Cruise.ITS is MOVE ON.This movie is fucking AWESOME.There is absolutly nothing wrong with it.Looper is always there to nit pick. AGAIN Who cares how he was cast.He was in it then and is now. This is nonsense.
The Top Gun sequel stars Tom Cruise 30+ years after the original is the reason for Maverick's age and rank. There are no active duty Navy Captains pushing 60 in real life. If we were going to nitpick about career progression, Maverick starts the original Top Gun with 5 unauthorized fly-bys. In real life, he would have been canned after the second one.
Only reason he didn't get kicked out is because Viper kept him in He probably owed his life to Duke Mitchell back in Vietnam He didn't let the Tower guy catch Maverick even though he was in front of him Just got scolded Spoiler for Top Gun Maverick . . . . . . When Iceman became an Admiral he kept bailing Maverick out of trouble too many times It's no wonder he managed to stay
While watching this movie, I saw a remake of Star Wars. The jet fighters sequences were a carbon copy of the climatic ending scene to destroy the death star with the Millenium Falcon and Imperial TIE Fighters of which Darth Vader was at the helm of one.
Why does no-one raise the question of Rooster's age? He should be near 40 right now. He was kindergarten - to - 7 when Goose died and 30 years later he is in his 20s....
Nah, he was like 3-4 years old in 1986, and movie was filmed in 2018, so he can be around 37 yo. In the movie they don't specify the year, so it could happen a bit earlier. Also in movie they said Maverick pulled out Rooster's papers from academy, pushing him 4 years back, which makes him probably older, than others. Also Admiral says 30+ years of duty for Maverick. In the beginning of first Top Gun he was already a LT, 24 yo, meaning he was on duty for a while. So, maybe the time difference between two movie timelines is a bit smaller, than 30 years.
@@creativebodyflying still - even in most lenient interpretation - 26 isn't 35... I guess the makers must have thought that with such a good story nobody would really care about those tiny discrepancies. And it seems they were right. 👍😄

Cruise wasn't allowed any stick time in a F-18 Super Hornet? Wanna bet? Things happen ""Off the books"" all the time. Cruise may tell the story in 15-20 years....Or maybe never. And, of course I am probably completely wrong.
I wish the movie would show the fact that the pilots couldn't do all that "pilot ****" without us techs. As the saying goes, we owned the planes, the pilots just played with them.
The P-51D Mustang is actually owned by him. I am 99.9% sure he had the fellows out at stallion 51 in Kissimmee, Florida. Track down and locate a very beautiful well kept up up P-51 Mustang. That's part of one of their services that they do. And also you can get certification for your ratings to fly the P51 Mustang Crazy Horse" with Mr.. Pete Lauterbach with his dual control TF-51D Mustang group. Along with the pilot maker before you get the chance to take the trolls of the Mustang. You would have to master the North American at-6 Texan/ SNJ / Harvard. I was blessed to have a AT-6 Harvard MK-II growing up in the early 1980s. But here's their website information to take a look at what packages they have to offer. That way one day you can fulfill your wildest dreams. And be able to take up awesome beautiful screaming supercharged V12 through the central Florida Skies.
They should have made a prequel instead about mavericks dad and a younger version of viper. That would have made a great movie. Sequels are never as good as the originals.
Oh yes she's a beautiful person.wings and all.and he has very very beautiful ears too, also forced actually.but was so cute.and he was able to hear things better
Top Gun (1986) was full of cinematic nonsense (artistic license): wrong use of the word 'bogey', inaccurate portrayal of the 'hostile' aircraft which were just F5s not Sukhoi, flying upside down over another jet (rubbish), etc. There's a video out there about all the other inaccuracies. It was really just an action flick but it ended up inspiring so many to the naval aviation services. Call-signs for naval aviators also differ from the air force. The re-shoot scenes (lift scene) sort of stood out as Kelly McGillis looked different.
It's a movie you boob. In 1986 I dont think the USSR were going to part with MIGs or Sukhois for us to use. A4s arent dogfighters either. Its entertainment, not a documentary. 🙄
As Bio, Bozo, Jambo, Smegs were told by Simpson and Scott, It's a movie not a documentary, still the Navy technical advisors Smegs and Bio were able to add to the movie, all of the dialog said by the actors while their masks were on were provided by Smegs and Bio.
@@lukebuchwald9252 Then there wouldn't have been this sequel in 2021/22, because he would have been drummed out, possibly after a period of incarceration. Check out the comment by the Top Gun instructor at the 3:50 mark. I don't know that guy, he's either really funny or incredibly dense. How about Doctors who know how to put your broken bodies back together. How about engineers who know how build that thing your flying in. Or cops who go to work everyday with a little badge pinned on their front and a big target on their back or fireman who do so much more than put out fires I don't want to start listing any because I know there are fireman out there who will say, " why didn't you mention this or that"? I know I was a fireman for 34 years of my life. There are so many professions out there that my life more enjoyable. I'm to old to go through life thinking foolish things like that Top Gun instructor. But even if I did think it I wouldn't open my mouth and say it.
I'm confused. On the one hand you say that the Navy wouldn't let Cruise fly the F-18's so they were flown by Navy pilots. On the other hand you say that they placed cameras in the F-18's, Cruise said that he didn't know any other way to make the movie without putting the actors in the F-18's, and that one of the selling points to convince Tom to do the film was that the actors would actually be in the F-18's. How could the actors be in the F-18's and not be flying them?
Have you seen the original? Navy planes have a pilot and a RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) which Goose was. So most F/A-18s are two seaters just like the F-14s they replaced.
F-A/18F is a two-seater version of Super Hornet....Tom and other actors flew on the backseat of F-A/18F Super Hornets and they choreographed the scenes in such a way that it looks like they are flying in front seat.
F/A-18E and F E is for 1 seater F is for 2 seater A, B, C, D, E, F You can guess which is 1 seat and 2 seat from the alphabets With the exception of G because it's a 2 seat type
Tom Cruise asked to fly the F-18 but the Navy refused. I guess he will have to officially join the Navy. Also, because the cost of one plane is around 80 million. The insurance companies will not allow it.
I got the 4k edition of TOP GUN mainly because it's a Sir Tony Scott movie . In the special features was a bunch of crap giving most of the movie's credit to Cruise instead of Sir Tony . Only a moron would give the credit for the movie's success to Cruise .
The original movie was based on a true life story at the urgings of Chuck Yeager. This was after I had urged moviemakers to make the mov ie The Right Stuff. He didn't tell me about the Maverick movie until after it's release. The 2nd movie does not have any basis in reality and is purely Fictional. I have no idea of who Pete Mitchell is or was. My call sign in the Navy was Maverick. The name I used while serving on special assignment in the Navy was Ritt Read.
Top Gun Maverick is a Rerun of the Original PLUS the FIRST STAR WARS film released - Luke Skywalker vs the Death Star!! It's like they watch that StarWars and just Copied it, right down to the X Wing Fighters Training, Planning the Attack, Flying through the Death Star Cavern, having to drop the "Bomb" into the Small Square "spot", the Anti Aircraft Guns (lasers in the case of SW's) and the Dog Fights with the H Wings!! Excellent Movie 👍👍🌈👌👏
I hate to tell you, but there’s not gonna be a part 3.
@@markmcdonald2477 why?
@@rizhrd181 You’d have to ask the movie studio that, but from what I understand this one is it. There doesn’t really need to be a part 3. This one finished off the questions that needed to be answered.
@@markmcdonald2477 with the box office for 3 days domestic $125M for sure they would have part 3. 1st ever beyond $100M of Tom Cruise opening weekend in his entire career!
International Opening inclusion is $250M already. Beyond the cost of the making of this sequel.
Part 3 for sure is on its way.
@@rizhrd181 Ehh..I mean if they did a part 3 I’m sure I’d go see it..I’m just not sure where they’d take the plot in a part 3. I’m 90% sure they won’t do a part 3. Maybe something that follows Rooster in a part 3? Idk. It was an awesome movie tho. The original is my all time favorite and I think this one was better in a lot of ways!! I think they did a BRILLIANT job in how they tied in the original. Very nostalgic!! Definitely in my top 5 all time greats, with the original as my #1!!
Modine didn't want to play in movie that showed America in a positive light, got it.
I love this movie topgun and cant wait to see the new one
It was amazing
A Great movie is a great movie whether it’s politics or not, we need to support American 🇺🇸 great movie…. Love this movie, I saw it twice and worth every penny of it !
I had know idea Tony and Ridley Scott were brothers. Both brilliant in their own right
Regarding dustup about a Navy Captain version of Maverick in today's world/this movie.
Iceman is a 4 star in the Top Gun Maverick...He is the Commander in Chief of Pacific Fleet.
Tom Cruise is the last true movie star.
As a note the character of Maverick was loosely based on, Randy "Duke" Cunningham, a navy ace in the Vietnam war.
Then a politician, then a politician who took bribes.
That's disputed, Cunningham thinks he's the one. But there are others who fit the bill more. Cunningham was a said to be a bit of a self promoting piece of work.
Wasn't Duke the name of Maverick's father? That would make sense.
@@JohnRoot34231 Cunningham is not the only "Duke" Duke was also the nickname for for John Wayne, pretty popular in the 60's
Interestingly enough, Anthony Edwards thought the movie was too jingoistic also. However, unlike Matthew Modine, he still was willing to act in it.
I hope movie, director and Tom will get Oscars
Tom cruise is the only one chosen and considered to play top gun nobody else
Looper “the planes needed to be bigger and faster.” The f-18 is both smaller and slower than the f-14
slower?
I enjoy the new top gun!! I wish they will make another sequel
The "untold truth" of a fictional character. I just can't even. Seriously.
It's for fun.
Yeah the title is misleading, it should be more like: "Things about Top Gun's Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell You Didn't Know" 👍
The title’s aim it to get our attention!
@@gloriafalkson2363 IT'S FOR FUN.
Its sad when Val Kilmer appears in the movie. Hope he is well in real life...
Only reason he didn't get kicked out is because Viper kept him in
He probably owed his life to Duke Mitchell back in Vietnam
He didn't let the Tower guy catch Maverick even though he was in front of him
Just got scolded

When Iceman became an Admiral he kept bailing Maverick out of trouble too many times
It's no wonder he managed to stay
The film was made in 2018 and 2019, when Tom was 56-57. Don’t you know that 46 is the new 56?
Tom Cruise is Maverick, Maverick is Tom Cruise...
Legend is an underrated classic..
That’s Duke Mitchell’s boy!
Is it weird that it would seem more real to me if it was green screen I'm the pilot seat, than real in the passenger seat? lol....
Well I have been writing my own fanfiction for 22 years now and I already had written a fanfiction for Top Gun Maverick the minute I saw the movie on June 7th I called it Top Gun legacy or Top Gun legacies I have all the new characters and I also write my own fanfiction like I said so I just had the same main character I've had since then just travel to all sorts of different TV shows that I love so right now I brought over the top gun characters to my fan fiction as well.💖
So far I have seen top gun Maverick four times June 7th June 10th June 14th June 21st and I don't care anybody says each time I see it I saw uncontrollably at certain scenes especially when I see Maverick and Rooster hugging.
Mav did say He Quit being an instructor at Top Gun after 2 months so maybe thats why hes still Captain.
Highly decorated captain. 😁
A billion dollars in world wide ticket sales guarantees a Top Gun 3
“Cruise told playboy”
Ok all I needed to know
Mathew Modine is suffering from a bad case of envy. It's sad.
I had a dream about a movie made with Keanu Reeves and Matthew Modine, some jungle and KGB?
Can I fry that? Yup, I’ll hook’em. You clean them and fry them!
The F/A-18 Hornet is not bigger nor faster than the F-14 Tomcat.
TC for President
Top Gun 3 ???Hmmmmm Fly Navy Baby !
The films politics? I hardly even noticed politics in it
This movie is just awesome.
Capt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell
I don't think Top Gun: Maverick takes place recently... How old would that make Rooster?
Around 36
I'm glad Matthew didn't take the role. He would have ruined it.
5:16 👍 for the Community reference
I've got a great idea for film 3.
Cruise wasn't allowed any stick time in a F-18 Super Hornet? Wanna bet? Things happen ""Off the books"" all the time. Cruise may tell the story in 15-20 years....Or maybe never. And, of course I am probably completely wrong.
I want to know how Maverick's Mom died. She was crazy young!
Looper....ur wrong the F-14 is much bigger and much faster that the F-18
It's a movie! There is no "untold truth!". LOL
That’s because you can’t handle the truth!!
I wish the movie would show the fact that the pilots couldn't do all that "pilot ****" without us techs. As the saying goes, we owned the planes, the pilots just played with them.
The P-52 Mustang scene makes me think Maverick is on Reserve or Retired
Ele se arrisca muito....e muito perigoso, mas ele se sai bem......Good God
Imagine not casting tom cruise on a top gun movie that would be a blockbuster dizaster for the movie.
Drones are literally referenced once in the film and that's that
John Travolta was also considered for the role of Maverick fyi.
Yes he is a pilot too cool he can fly too
actually f18s are smaller and significantly slower than f14s
FYI the Super Hornet is neither bigger or faster than the Tomcat.
It's more nimble than the Tomcat
It's in the name
Tomcat being feisty cats
Hornets being small and yet maneuverable that can sting someone right in the ass
would be interesting for Tom to have his own F-18 hornet? or f-14 TOMCAT (my most favorite military jets)?
It's sad Tom Cruise didn't fly a F22 and an F35
I might be wrong, but F-18 is smaller then F-14
They should have made a prequel instead about mavericks dad and a younger version of viper. That would have made a great movie. Sequels are never as good as the originals.
Empire Strikes Back!
And yet nigh on every review is saying top gun 2 is one of the best sequels ever made.go back to bed
Saw this last night , it’s better than the first
Good idea, with different cast and actor also 60s scenario
@@westgatechannel278 We can borrow the Japanese F-4's for Maverick's dad to fly.
Quick one, why the inverted dive for the mission ?
So that you can use the lift force produced by the aircraft's wings to quickly overcome the momentum of that steep climb and enter a steep descent.
@@bradbass3676 Very hard on the pilot's body and brain, thx man
Oh so he didn't want to make sequels cuz he didn't want to dupe people into joining the military.... essentially
If you join the Military your eyes are wide open. Not duped.

Full metal jacket, great movie, Top Gun, just for kicks
It was well known( before he signed up ) that Cruise did not want to be in a war movie.
Oh yes she's a beautiful person.wings and all.and he has very very beautiful ears too, also forced actually.but was so cute.and he was able to hear things better
30 years later and Cruise still looks great. Must be all that alien baby blood he drinks.
@@zounds1981 Of course it was just a movie. Don't have to call me names just because you've got a carrier. 😂
As Bio, Bozo, Jambo, Smegs were told by Simpson and Scott, It's a movie not a documentary, still the Navy technical advisors Smegs and Bio were able to add to the movie, all of the dialog said by the actors while their masks were on were provided by Smegs and Bio.
Didn't Charlie said that MiG-28 is just a modified F-5?
@@guts-141 No.
Presumably Maverick would have been among those shooting up the people fleeing along the Basra Highway in 1991?
Mav would never do it --- he has too much integrity
@@lukebuchwald9252 Then there wouldn't have been this sequel in 2021/22, because he would have been drummed out, possibly after a period of incarceration.
Integrity in a Services situation of any nation may mean refusing to obey orders that are questionable on moral or legal grounds; it can also mean respecting the chain of command and doing whatever whenever.
@@bheast86 I just can't see Mav firing on fleeing combatants --- that would violate the rules of engagement that he was taught
Not if he was flying in an Tomcat squadron, we didnt carry air to ground ordnance back then (cept for 20mm fir the M-61A),. We did air cover near the area tho. Its was a turkey shoot...
Yeah, umm... no. No one was accused or charged over the "Road of Death".
Filming with Tom Cruise is much like it was filming with Alan Ladd. Make damn sure you have plenty of apple boxes (alan ladds) standing by.
i guess you are funny i guess
@@mdo5121 From the Department of Redundancy Department.
Tom still channeling Misvavage?.? Whose wife disappeared in 06...at least Tom just banishes him exes...
Top Gun was based on a book hence the lawsuit.
Cruise sits in the back seat of the jet... Both seats are capable of flying.. this is how training is done in real life....
F/A-18E and F
E is for 1 seater
F is for 2 seater
A, B, C, D, E, F
You can guess which is 1 seat and 2 seat from the alphabets
With the exception of G because it's a 2 seat type
Tom Cruise asked to fly the F-18 but the Navy refused. I guess he will have to officially join the Navy. Also, because the cost of one plane is around 80 million. The insurance companies will not allow it.
I got the 4k edition of TOP GUN mainly because it's a Sir Tony Scott movie . In the special features was a bunch of crap giving most of the movie's credit to Cruise instead of Sir Tony . Only a moron would give the credit for the movie's success to Cruise .
who else thinks TGM's mission was copied from the Star Wars Death Star Assault?
The original movie was based on a true life story at the urgings of Chuck Yeager. This was after I had urged moviemakers to make the mov ie The Right Stuff. He didn't tell me about the Maverick movie until after it's release. The 2nd movie does not have any basis in reality and is purely Fictional. I have no idea of who Pete Mitchell is or was. My call sign in the Navy was Maverick. The name I used while serving on special assignment in the Navy was Ritt Read.
