It will not be a conditional surrender. For a start they won't be subject to war crimes trials or shipped off to Siberia never to be seen again. Each Azov fighter is worth at least 5 to 10 ordinary Russia prisoners. They will be exchanged for high value Russian prisoners. It's just a matter of time.

This is going to lower ukrainian morale, despite using different words to describe what happened. If you end up in battle and is surrounded by enemies, say "i evacuate" they will die laughing.
They kept Russia occupied in Mariupol way longer than anyone expected. This gave time to mobilize UAF to other parts of the country. Also they are responsible for around 10% of total Russian losses.

The commander and the Ukrainian defense chiefs intentionally decided to stay there because they held off, and held up, about 20,000 Russian forces from being deployed to other parts of Ukraine. These soldiers knew that was their mission, they chose it despite knowing what their odds were, and they succeeded FAR longer and better than anyone expected. They saved thousands of Ukranian lives, and they prevented the Russian advances.

Evacuation by the west would be OK, only this is a pure surrender of Azov to Russians. It's just hard to get used to the word "captivity". I worked in steel plant in UK and they have massive underground networks gullys if you didn't know your way around you could get lost.That's why the Russians didn't go in it would of been a slaughter.

Well, they did hold off the Russian troops humiliatingly long from the Russian perspective. Just remember that the war was supposed to be over in five days, well now it has been nearly three months and the Russians are still performing very poorly, only making some very minor gains on some areas while losing territory on other areas. The defenders of Mariupol knew exactly why they were fighting and surely acknowledged that they couldn't hold on forever in an encircled city. So I would indeed call it a defense victory, even thought the inevitable happened, eventually.

The commander and the Ukrainian defense chiefs intentionally decided to stay there because they held off, and held up, about 20,000 Russian forces from being deployed to other parts of Ukraine. These soldiers knew that was their mission, they chose it despite knowing what their odds were, and they succeeded FAR longer and better than anyone expected. They saved thousands of Ukranian lives, and they prevented the Russian advances.

I worked in steel plant in UK and they have massive underground networks gullys if you didn't know your way around you could get lost.That's why the Russians didn't go in it would of been a slaughter.

Just remember that the war was supposed to be over in five days, well now it has been nearly three months and the Russians are still performing very poorly, only making some very minor gains on some areas while losing territory on other areas.
The defenders of Mariupol knew exactly why they were fighting and surely acknowledged that they couldn't hold on forever in an encircled city. So I would indeed call it a defense victory, even thought the inevitable happened, eventually.
