      Like Hank Shocklee said on the Executive Produced Public Enemy album It Takes a Nation... "we tried to keep Rick Rubin as far away from the project as possible".
      Seriously, I respect Rick for the two best Red Hot Chili Peppers albums, but he gets extra cred and attention anytime he touches anything. 99 out of a 100 producers could do what he has done post 2000. I find the assertion that this pop rock album is nothing more than a dot in time hilarious. Who the fuck still listens to this album?
      Respect to Rick, but there are far too many Rick riders out there.

    This song is the one that made my dad understand metal music. He was born in 1959, and grew up listening to English folk music, and classical music. He learned to play violin, and eschewed punk-rock and New Wave of British Heavy Metal to play the fiddle with folk-music setups, sang in choirs, and to study to become a doctor. He was raised in a very musical family, though. But rock and metal music wasn't to his taste.
    I got into rock and metal though. And in the early 2000s Freeview TV was a thing and we finally got a Freeview box. One evening I found Kerrang TV on there, and put it on. And we talked about the music coming on. If I remember right it was a Greenday song from the Warning album that first caught his ear. There was a lot of folk influence on that album, and he found that interesting. But this song was the one that he *really* noticed. From the gentle guitar intro, to the frantic verses; then pulling it back for the chorus, he observed that the ugliness of the verses really made how pretty the chorus was land more strongly. He noticed some European folk elements in there too (naturally - the tremelo guitar in the background, apparently; I know that kind of thing is common in Eastern European folk traditions, but have no idea if that was intentional by the SOAD or not).
    And then when it all comes together for the big, epic, soaring chorus. The ugliness of words (the song being about suicide was very much not lost on him) and distorted guitar is juxtaposed to the beautiful melody, and the piano line binding everything together. He told me he understands why people listen to this kind of thing now. It's still not (and won't ever be) his style and aesthetic, but this was the song that made my dad get it.

      I’ve seen in many interviews with them (the ones where they actually talk to the interviewer, and not just make fun of them and their “stupid” questions) and they often have talked about using their Armenian background, and what music they would hear their parents play, who were born there, to shape most of their songs. So you are right about the sound of the song with it having that type of influence apparent in the song.

    • @SuWoopSparrow

      Scientific research has found that particular elements of music/composition are universally appealing. If theres 1 thing SOAD does amazingly, intentionally or not, its using music theory to expand the reach and appeal of their music. One of the few "metal" bands that are so easily understood and enjoyed by people of all tastes.

    • @BenignViewer
      @BenignViewer 3 года назад +15

      Yes, the roots of tremolo guitar spread deep into traditional Armenian folk music too, along with a lot of the Balkan and Black Sea nations. e.g: ruclips.net/video/dVSPh7oIaoE/видео.html

      @@creamwobbly If you read what I said, I said intentionally or unintentionally use music theory. Surely its not 5 guys sitting in a studio discussing theory to write a specific song. But if it were as easy as "throwing shit around until it sounds good", there would be much more great music out there.
      Music has gotten quantifiably simpler, as a generality. The meters in which musicians can play are lower today than in the past, generally speaking.
      Music theory, like any other artistic theory, is not bullshit. It gives an artist a toolset to use when they are actually working on their craft. Yes, most artists arent sitting down and starting a specific piecefrom theory, but thats because theyve already got the theory in the back of their head. When they get stuck somewhere, they can refer back to their theory for potential answers. You think cinematography in a film is just randomly pointing a camera around until something "looks good"? No way. A director has a vision, wants a specific mood, and has an idea of what various camera angles will achieve that mood.

    Rick Rubin has a very straightforward production style, yet he helps to make so many of these awesome bands standout. Slayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, System of a Down...
    He captures and consolidates each band's strengths sort of like Steve Albini, but without the indie weirdness. Toxicity was possibly the heaviest album I had heard at the time it came out (I was only 11). A very bizarre band than conquered both the studio AND the stage!!!!

    I remember the first time I heard this song. It had been released and played on MTV, maybe 1 or 2 days in 2001 before I finally got a listen. I was 20 years old, so MTV still showed a lot of musical content and it was pretty common for most 20 year olds I knew, to still watch it for music.
    When I heard the song, I stopped everything I was doing. In the Army and living in my apartment... I instantly became addicted to the song and immediately bought the album when I could. It's still one of my favorite songs. I can agree with Rick Rubin, that the songs different tones and changes were certainly different to hear at the time. While many other bands at the time, had great lyrics, great music and great delivery... there was something about S.O.A.D that had me hooked. I even learned the lyrics as quickly as I could. What a great time to be alive, at least before 9/11.

    I was a massive SOAD fan in high school, and bought Toxicity the day it came out:
    September 4 2001
    About two weeks later we watched the towers fall in New York. I remember feeling this weird synchronicity listening to the lines "trust in my self righteous" on the way home from school that day.
    I week later I bought Slayer's "God Hates us all" which was released...Sept 11 2001.
    The abstraction of music really lends itself beautifully to mysticism.

    So he didn't know that he'd opened up the bible??
    ...I mean, isn't Christ sacrificing his self on a pagan cross the whole point of the 66 books in the bible??
    Sorry, but I am a little bit skeptical that the singer wrote a song about "self righteous suicide" -runs into a mental block about how to finish the story that his song is telling; is shown a library & told to "pick out a book & see what happens"; & *accidentally* picks The Bible (I mean, its a Bible. You know if a Bible is in your hands!); *accidentally* opens the thing up to Christ giving up the ghost on the cross; & *accidentally* reads where He finishes his Self Righteous Suicide on that Pagan Cross!
    I can't help but smell a hint of "Jewish Embellishment" here, in playing the whole thing off like "it just happened that way!" b.s.
    I think the "self righteous suicide" came full circle with a little help via some "self fulfilled prophecy".
    -This kinda reminds me of that Italian Captain, Schettino on that huge cruise ship, The Concordia, that he sank, a few years back, in the Mediterranean while trying to impress a girl...
    He fled his ship as it was going down. Passengers were trapped & he was ordered to go back on his ship & help them.
    He claimed that he *accidentally fell* in a life-boat, so that's why he wasn't on board his ship to help them............yeah, sure!
    The singer & Rubin remind me of Captain Schettino.

    You missed a huge Bible verse though. “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit” is the obvious one. “Why have you forsaken me?” Were the last words on the cross in the Gospel attributed to Matthew. Juxtaposing the two together like that shines doubt on how four stories of the same event written by people that were there can disagree on so much.

    • @dfyt9179
      @dfyt9179 3 года назад +3

      The answer most give is that the gospels supplement each other. I don’t think any of them were meant to be exhaustive. If two poor saps had to document my night tonight, one might say I watched a shitty movie with my wife and went to bed. The other might say I drank warm beer while wasting a sad amount of time looking at YT videos and went to bed, both would be right. Crucifixion took awhile, so Jesus possibly said a lot of other things that weren’t recorded - and had time to experience many feelings.
      The night before, he also said he was “overwhelmed with sorrow” and prayed that he could avoid what was to come...but then also said “May your will be done.” If viewed/reported separately, those also might seem contradictory.
