Not to mention the nonsense that she was behind the murders of the princes. Or the fact that she wanted to mary her granddaghter margaret so young to james. She was totally against it because of what happened to her being married as a child in reality.
Oh my gosh. That. I nearly clawed my eyes out when she told Mary "You know i was about your age when i was married. So ThErE's nOtHiNg tO fEaR!!!" And then in the Episode where Margaret Beaufort dies they show how young she was and how difficult the birth and i think this is the FIRST TIME the whole Saga has even included the fact that Margaret was very young when she gave birth to Henry. In fact going by the age of the actresses they cast they seem to have been outright ignoring/erasing it.
right? As if she didn’t nearly die giving birth to Henry, which is likely why she didn’t have any more children. They totally ignored casting age in all three shows, as she was only 13 years older than Henry VII. When Henry was crowned she was 41 not 54.
It's Philippa Gregory so I am not surprised in the least that she went on assignation of Margaret character. Philippa is a fan girl of Richard iii so she wanted to blame the Tudors for his crimes. Also her series didn't have a bad guy really so created one. The only thing that is historically accurate about her work is that those people existed and that is it
I agree, the way Margaret's been portrayed in fiction is awful, but I don't think it's unusual- Anne, George & Jane Boleyn get pretty comprehensively slandered too. And I know it's fiction, but so many people believe it's true, to the point that they'll argue with historians- & sadly, not that many people will read an actual history book, so I do get angry when it's demonising someone by totally inventing things. You need poetic license to fill in the blanks etc, but that's a far cry from pure invention that contradicts the known facts. I DO think the real history's exciting enough, & I don't think stories need to have cardboard-cutout goodies & baddies. Very interesting, thankyou!
Excellent and much needed remarks about these series. Yes, no need to take away the entertainment value of having an antagonist in a show, but those of us interested in the history that inspired it are very thankful for your clarifications. I think that historical fiction is generating interest in the past and people will be seeking out information which you can certainly help provide! Not as a criticism of a production, but a desire to know what the actual history was. Thank you for mentioning some authors and references for us to further our knowledge.
After just watching The Spanish Princess, thank you for answering some questions I had. I was so disturbed by the depiction of her involvement re Edmund Dudley, and her part in his fate. I appreciate your real truth as to that.
And so what about how Margaret and Elizabeth of York both seemingly had this hatred for Catherine. This baffled me as it seemed to continue a trend from The White Princess of mothers arranging marriages and then apparently doing their level best to abuse the subjects of the match and treat them with at best apathy and at worst wrath.
Gareth you are my spirit animal i.e "Little rosé break" please post more I find you seem to generally agree with my opinions and since you are the qualified one to be making opinions in the first place .. I adore your somewhat quirky self. I love how much you genuinely care about your subjects (i.e. Margaret Beaufort... boy can you imagine if she was queen in her own right... would love to see a video where you dive into what that might have looked like!!!) - love from across the pond in NY, 26 Katie😘
I disagree... These were REAL people. It is wrong to portray their lives falsely because they aren't able to defend themselves. The story is fascinating & compelling on their own without making stuff like in the Spanish Princess. Henry VIII was 10 yrs old when Arthur marries Katheryn.
On the subject of how they wrote Margaret ruling England from the shadows and Henry just sitting there passively I think they went further than that. They went so far as to write him as clownish and manic, incapable of ruling without his mother's feminine wiles This is a trope in fake feminist writing where they seem to think the only way for female characters to be powerful is to make fools of the male characters.
Hello: I just finished reading Alison Weir’s newest novel The Las White Rose. It’s about Elizabeth of York I reviewed it on my channel. I really liked it. It was a bit long… About 20 hours long on audio. Would recommend it though.
You didn't mind the white princess? Because i thought that it was SUPREMELY questionable in historicity, character and structure and a lot of the character assassination that the Spanish Princess carried out was established in TWP. Also the costumes were game of thrones knock off trash. Both TWP AND TSP BUTCHERED the characters of Maggs B, but also Bess of York.
I agree with Margaret's character assassination, I think it's laziness from Philippa Gregory to reduce her to this cartoon baddie but I'm not sure I agree with the fact that no women wielded power in this time in Europe. Didn't people like Louise of Savoy and Marguerite of Angouleme have great power in France? Margaret of Austria? Queen Anne of Beaujeau?
Yes the world was beginning to change in regard to women of rank being permitted some power. But England was a bit behind, as Henry VIII’s nervousness about a female succession suggests.
@@royalhistorygeeks6034 Thanks for the video. I love that these historical fictions bring people to research history but I love Lady Margaret much more. They should really make a series about her story. You can't make brave women like that up!
@@errorsinconduct Season 2's version of Anne Boleyn was awful as well. She was never willing to be the king's misstress like she was shown in that dreadful portrayal (no offense to the Actress, she has nothing but my sympathy for the bad material she was given).
@eamonndeane587 did I say that? No I didn't. I merely stated that her shady reputation had been discussed for years before Gregory was even born. I guess some people can turn simple things into a drama!

I totally agree , great review and i also like Dan Jones Documentary about her / war of the roses is excellent

Thanks so much for posting this. It’s nice to “meet” another Lady Margaret Beaufort fan.

I'd love to see Harriet Walter portray a more loving version because she is so fantastic, and MB was a truly amazing person!
Try watching " Shadow of the Tower ". Nicely done and shows a more realistic story of all the characters of the day.
Thankyou for reminding me about that! As a fan of Margaret & Henry VII, I've been meaning to watch it, & it _is_ on yt, so yay!
Yea i never watched the show..i did not like how they turned Elizabeth of York into a cruel heartless woman..

I have great respect & admiration for Margaret Beaufort, so the character assasination in these series was horrible to watch!

Yes. Reading it at the moment.
Series 2 was worse. This show went to a new level of sick distortion. I couldn’t finish it

The series would make a good fairy tale if the names were changed.

Spanish princess villainized Margaret Beaufort and in s2 COA joins her in being villainized.
I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch season 2 yet...

I find Lady Margaret very interesting; to have a baby at 13 and he becomes king.
I have only seen clips as not got Starz .
Its literally butchering somebody's character
I think that the people who wrote this series have mother in law issues haha
Her shady reputation has been discussed for many years, way before Philippa Gregory.
So you believe Phillipa Gregory's depiction of her to be accurate?
