"Every Grain of Sand" is Dylan's very resonant closer these days. This version's from 28 years ago.

  • One of my favorite songs, not that frequently performed live, recorded October 4, 1994, at the State Theater in Portland, Maine.

I think I was at this show. Not sure about the exact date but I think I went 2 nights. Great shows, great band. Funny I thought he was really old and these might be his last shows. He was 53, my age today. He’s 80 and still at it.

      Crazy...
I saw him twice in "93 in Ca. and also figured he was old and would hang it up soon..
I was born in "70...about 1 year younger than you I'm guessing.
I went on to see him over 20 times...

@@targarosko almost 60 years, wow! I’ve been passionate about him for exactly 50 now - ever since a friend brought New Morning to play during art class in spring 1971 when I was 14. The minute I first heard Dylan’s singing “If Not For You,” there was something about the sound of his voice and the way he sang that absolutely captivated me and still does.
It’s been a wonderful journey of discovery ever since.

@@ArturArtist I had the chance to discover this genius in 1966 in Paris, he was not unanimous far from there !!!!! but I fell crazy for this wonderful young man a little strange but with such talent, since my admiration for him has never left me, it is true that I am a complete fan of 1978 especially but in all his discography there is nothing to throw away everything is good for me, I am a fan of V.O..J and desolation row my back pages, mr tambourine man and many more ..... thank you for having a good time

    LYRICS: Every Grain of Sand
    WRITTEN BY: BOB DYLAN
In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There’s a dyin’ voice within me reaching out somewhere
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair
Don’t have the inclination to look back on any mistake
Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break
In the fury of the moment I can see the Master’s hand
In every leaf that trembles, in every grain of sand
Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer
The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay
I gaze into the doorway of temptation’s angry flame
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name
Then onward in my journey I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand
I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer’s dream, in the chill of a wintry light
In the bitter dance of loneliness fading into space
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face
I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there’s someone there, other times it’s only me
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand
