Had the near miss (by a breath and a half) resulted in the boat bow impacting the kayakers body instead, the impact alone could have easily been fatal; .if not the impact alone,the kayaker would have suffered tremendous horrible injury,since the boater would have ran over him (further injury inflicted after the initial impact), and subsequently being chopped into by the outboard propeller. All of this would have taken approximately only two seconds. If this would not have in combination been fatal, the injuries inflicted would have caused the kayaker to breathe heavily in bodily reaction to breathe, and this impulse to breathe in desperately for air would have caused him to fatally drown (drowning).

I agree. I was driving today and I passed an older man just staring down at his phone while going 50 mph. On the way back I passed 2 women doing it. It’s unbelievable how many people just don’t give a shit until something really bad happens. And usually only when it happens to them.
You had a good attitude about it. As a kayaker and 26’ boat owner I fear being hit and hitting others. That boater was an idiot. After many close calls I finally put a flag on my kayak and started wearing brighter colors. As a boater I can say it is hard to see kayaks and even other small boats some time. You always give the right of way to a kayaker and as a boat driver you are also responsible for your wake so those who boat around kayaks slow down because you are responsible if your wake flips another vessel, including a kayak.
Those two fukers were not even looking in the direction the boat was going. They were trolling....and as their boat passed him, they were too in shock to realize what had happened...but even so...they should have at least gone back and made sure his kayak wasn't holed and sinking or anything dangerous. Young kids to irresponsible to have a boat on water.

I am a doctor. I remember a case during my rotation in the surgical department, a poor teenager was kayaking during his holiday with his family and a boat hit him. He lost a whole side of his gluteus muscle. Glad you went home not injured!

I lived on a sailboat for 12 years. I was a captain of a commercial fishing vessel for the same amount of time. This happens all the time. Most people out in the water (weekend warriors) should never get behind the wheel of a boat.

I'm not sure you know that you almost died. If you hadn't paddled/peddled forward like you did they would have broadsided you. Even at that low speed, the impact could easily have knocked you unconscious and pushed you under the boat. The outboard engines propeller could have killed or maimed you. You did the right thing by moving, but you should file charges against these kids, not just for nearly running you over, but for not stopping after they hit your vessel. Call the Coast Guard.

I love that you're doing it right. Life jacket, marine radio, navi system, and with a buddy. As a fellow kayak fisherman, I'm so glad you're okay. That's a scary video to watch. As a side note, this is why I carry insurance on my kayak... For the uninsured and underinsured boater coverage (which would generally cover a hit & run if you have resulting injuries). Yes, the boat operator clearly nearly committed manslaughter. You can actually see him looking right at our kayaking friend in the photo caught by the go pro. The boat operator knew exactly what he was doing. The boat operator made no change at all to avoid him. He drove into him missing broadsiding him and killing him by two feet, had he not worked the pedaled rapidly as he could. He did not slow down at all. The boat driver then kept going, motoring away without any regard to our friend he just hit. This may actually be manslaughter with indifference to killing. Which the severity moves from manslaughter to a type of murder in degree.

@Mike Lyons It’s not hard at all to see a kayak on the water, especially on a small boat like that, and ESPECIALLY when you have passengers on the boat. The chance that the driver and passengers didn’t see the kayak is almost 0. I’m inclined to believe they either tried to hit him on purpose or tried to get close to scare him and ended up accidentally hitting him instead (which is probably most likely)

So weird this popped in my recommendations. Two days ago a guy on a boat clipped the back of my sons paddle boat (he’s 9) and tries yelling at my son. I live on the lake he paddles in and told me and showed me the boat. I waited at the only boat ramp and waited for the guy. Let’s just say he was a bit more bruised up when he left than when he arrived. Put someone’s kids life in danger and you better watch your ass. He’s lucky I didn’t shoot him

Okay, Just got a reply from California office that said that Die Hard would have to contact local Marine patrol and make a complaint. I did what I could. If Die hard considers this to be an accident and a 1 time thing, then he probably doesn't want to make enemies of a guy that can may not miss the next time. I've had a few boaters blast past me and wake me while fishing on my kayak. Never been hit by one. You handled it very well. That cod was nice. I use a big flag on the back of mine now. Saying they did not see you is a sad excuse for not paying attention on the water. At least this story had a positive ending.
You should think about having a loud boat horn with you at all times to alert other boaters and to sound an alarm for help. May you have great fishing stay safe out there on the water.
I’m a boater and have a Pwc. I always make sure to stay clear of kayaks and paddle boarders. Not just to keep from hitting you guys but I also don’t want my wake tipping you guys. Some people just aren’t meant to be captains of any type of water vessel. Glad you were ok man.

Exactly. When I go boating with my dad, I always sit up front to check for any object or thing that could be crossing our path. Where we fish is an artificial lake, which used to be forest with villages and large trees, of which the dead large trees form a danger to boats, sticking out of the water or hidden just below the surface. There are tons of those trees, and you will almost always bump a tree, which is why you need someone to help you look out for things in your path, which those two other guys on that boat in the video weren't doing.

I lived on a sailboat for 12 years. I was a captain of a commercial fishing vessel for the same amount of time. This happens all the time. Most people out in the water (weekend warriors) should never get behind the wheel of a boat.

I'm not sure you know that you almost died. If you hadn't paddled/peddled forward like you did they would have broadsided you. Even at that low speed, the impact could easily have knocked you unconscious and pushed you under the boat. The outboard engines propeller could have killed or maimed you. You did the right thing by moving, but you should file charges against these kids, not just for nearly running you over, but for not stopping after they hit your vessel. Call the Coast Guard.

I love that you're doing it right. Life jacket, marine radio, navi system, and with a buddy. As a fellow kayak fisherman, I'm so glad you're okay. That's a scary video to watch.
As a side note, this is why I carry insurance on my kayak... For the uninsured and underinsured boater coverage (which would generally cover a hit & run if you have resulting injuries). You can usually get coverage starting for about $100/yr.

Yes, the boat operator clearly nearly committed manslaughter. You can actually see him looking right at our kayaking friend in the photo caught by the go pro. The boat operator knew exactly what he was doing. The boat operator made no change at all to avoid him. He drove into him missing broadsiding him and killing him by two feet, had he not worked the pedaled rapidly as he could. He did not slow down at all. The boat driver then kept going, motoring away without any regard to our friend he just hit. This may actually be manslaughter with indifference to killing. Which the severity moves from manslaughter to a type of murder in degree.
The boat driver did not change course at all. In fact, motored the boat in a straight beeline directly into collision head on into the kayak. In a wide open sea, he pinpointed motoring directly into this tiny space, the space if a single kayak at sea. It is very obvious the boat driver knew exactly what he was doing. Look again at the footage. The driver has made no attempt to in the slightest manner manuever by the tiller the bow the boat. He has been filmed actually ramming the kayaker, fully knowing the kayaker is exactly there. Look carefully at the footage. The boat driver is actually looking right at the kayaker. He is making no alteration in course. He does not even slow in speed. He just rams the kayaker. Note that the kayaker is not moving at all; not in any motion.

@Mike Lyons It’s not hard at all to see a kayak on the water, especially on a small boat like that, and ESPECIALLY when you have passengers on the boat. The chance that the driver and passengers didn’t see the kayak is almost 0. I’m inclined to believe they either tried to hit him on purpose or tried to get close to scare him and ended up accidentally hitting him instead (which is probably most likely)

So weird this popped in my recommendations. Two days ago a guy on a boat clipped the back of my sons paddle boat (he’s 9) and tries yelling at my son. I live on the lake he paddles in and told me and showed me the boat. I waited at the only boat ramp and waited for the guy. Let’s just say he was a bit more bruised up when he left than when he arrived. Put someone’s kids life in danger and you better watch your ass. He’s lucky I didn’t shoot him

Okay, Just got a reply from California office that said that Die Hard would have to contact local Marine patrol and make a complaint. I did what I could. If Die hard considers this to be an accident and a 1 time thing, then he probably doesn't want to make enemies of a guy that can may not miss the next time. They veered off and it looked like to me it was on purpose. ??

I've had a few boaters blast past me and wake me while fishing on my kayak. Never been hit by one. You handled it very well. That cod was nice. I use a big flag on the back of mine now. Saying they did not see you is a sad excuse for not paying attention on the water. At least this story had a positive ending.
I like those safety flags but they are a pain in the ass if your line gets hung in it while casting because it’s directly behind you
You should think about having a loud boat horn with you at all times to alert other boaters and to sound an alarm for help. May you have great fishing stay safe out there on the water.

I’m a boater and have a Pwc. I always make sure to stay clear of kayaks and paddle boarders. Not just to keep from hitting you guys but I also don’t want my wake tipping you guys. Some people just aren’t meant to be captains of any type of water vessel. Glad you were ok man.

Exactly. When I go boating with my dad, I always sit up front to check for any object or thing that could be crossing our path. Where we fish is an artificial lake, which used to be forest with villages and large trees, of which the dead large trees form a danger to boats, sticking out of the water or hidden just below the surface. There are tons of those trees, and you will almost always bump a tree, which is why you need someone to help you look out for things in your path, which those two other guys on that boat in the video weren't doing.
