- The booms go down, the shuttles come out, the ore pours in!
It actually takes a few minutes for the booms to all go down. They then put out the shuttles on the booms to load the ore into the ship. The Ship is in charge of the loading, as in what holds, how much , ballast levels, etc. This ship was a the CN dock loading for about 6.5-7hrs before heading out and speeding away!
Over the years I have watched these ladies unload in Cleveland and this is the first time I get to watch them load. Thanks for a great video!👍
Glad you enjoyed it, you did some "digging" to find this one!
That's a shoveling SOB right there!! Hey shipmate, speed kills!!!!
LOL
So that's how it's done.........
Fascinating! Thank you!
Amazing you were able to catch this bit of footage for us. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome John !
This is a great video... thanks. I love watching the ships doing what they do best.
SO cool! Thanks!
You did some digging to find that old video! Thanks
Yes! The only thing better than a laker is a laker at an ore dock.
Awesome, well worth the wait...hope there’s more to come...
Very interesting! Thank you!
Amazing, Paul! GREAT video!
Very interesting! Thanks Paul!
Thanks. Always wanted to see this Operation
Thanks!
Awesome video. Thanks.
Very cool, I've never seen it before, thanks Paul.
Glad you enjoyed it
Cleanup on conveyor 35
What weights more, a shovel full of taconite or a shovel full of snow ? I cannot imagine that clean up was fun.
...also #34.
Thank you awesome video
This is so interesting to see.Thank you Paul!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks a bunch Paul. I needed this video so Memorized.
Boom 35 was a tad out of alignment. I'm surprised by how much of an oil sheen is on the water.
Wow. Awesome Video.
Much more modern than Marquettes docks. They're still loading old school!
Gravity Chutes ?
@@PaulScinocca Yep, I forgot the term.
@@terryboyer1342 an every day event for me 😁
I've been around these boats all my life I can tell you that the gravity system in Marquette will load the boats much faster than this system in Duluth. Where it takes 6.5 - 7 hours to load the Michipicoten in Duluth it takes only about 4 hours in Marquette.
@@Bentcypress Some times the old way is better!
I didn’t like seeing the oil slick in the water….was that boat leaking diesel fuel in the harbor?
Not sure it came from the vessel.
Someone needs to dump a five gallon bucket of Dawn dishwashing soap in the bilge
Naw send that speed freek that was shoveling up coal down there with a box of diapers!!
Michpicoten ? Sorry if I spelled it wrong
Nice.
nice deck load lol
Noticed that they're filling every other hatch. Do they fill those, shift the ship 40-50 ft, then fill the second half?
They will shift the vessel to align the chutes. They have a load template to make sure they are loading evenly and not stress the ship.
It's awesome to see how do freighter ships get more load of iron ore from these iron ore pellets.
CN Dock being ...Canadian National.. The Railroad?
Correct,
Oil sheen in water is great for fishing.
Amazing
Wow
Who is the shiploaders manufacturer? or the manufacturer of this port system?
A lot going on to load the ship. Must be managing the "levelness" all the time. Do they load when it's raining heavy? Pretty cool!
Broom and shovel police probably gave #35 a couple demerits. Lol
Not sure about raining heavily, definitely load in the rain though
Pretty cool ! Which ship is this ?
Michipicoten
What vessel is that? Also amazing video
Thanks!, Michipicoten
@@PaulScinocca thanks
Seems like they've complicated the process using the current loading method. What was wrong with the old reliable shoots. Much simpler and more efficient, IMHO.
I hear the old gravity chute loading is harder on the ship, less accurate for loading
The gravity chutes are far less accurate, and impossible to load the much wider 1000 foot vessels.
Cool! What Boat?
Michipicoten.
I thought so. Nice job Paul!
Cleanup in isle 35 lol
How many tons went in?
I do not know, I'll ask and see if they will tell me.
Someone is going to get a large fine for oil discharge into the lake.
How do they empty the ship. That’s what I want to know
The ships have a self unloading conveyor set up. That's what that crane looking contraption on the ship is.
Five minutes and nothing loaded?
not a thing...
Too much oil in the water☹️
Ore dust. I thought it was oil as well.
What is that sheen on the water ?
Petro ?
@@PaulScinocca could very well be petrol
I wonder if the sign on one of the rigs that says they loaded up the JRB in like 4 hours is still there?
It is, I think it's on shuttle 23?
@@PaulScinocca that's cool. I first saw it while visiting Captain Fitch on the Foy back in 89. Must've happened in the early 80s
Note the spreading oil sheen at the lower left hand part of the video (later the upper left hand) and the ore dust that is not controlled. Wondering about the mitigation of these hazards?
According to President Trump, no pollution occurred ‘False news’.🤦♂️
@@iansmartel5473 😂😂😂😂 troooth!
@@iansmartel5473 amazing how spoiled and stupid you people are
Pretty good speedrun, but if you hold A and B at the same time as you press Start, it causes a glitch that loads the ore immediately, saving a lot of time going into the next stage.
Oil in water
Where does the ore go from here?
This load went to the Sault.
How do the unload all of this?
On the previous video I did it shows a large white boom swinging out. The boom has a conveyor belt on it that runs from the boom to under the cargo holds. This allows them to "dump" the cargo onto the conveyor system in a controlled manner and deposit it where ever it needs to be at the destination.
Thank you, good sir.
What’s the story with the boiler on deck?
Little late here but that is a auxiliary boiler to supply steam and hot water when the ships main boilers are shut down all ships have a aux boiler and they are called a donkey boiler if you google it it goes back to the mining era when they hauled boilers to mining sites using donkeys
Sorry, I’ve been around boats all my life, and I would bet the farm it’s oil.
Not good seeing oil slick floating out on the starboard side
