The second episode of our monthly series on small (under 1hp) power engines, Mostly (but not all) model engines, From the Chinese hit & miss engines to scratchbuilt masterpiece's and everything in between.
This Flame Licker / Flame Gulper, Whichever you prefer to call it, Is made from a set of no longer available castings from Bengs Modellbau. Even though this particular engine does'nt appear to be available any longer, they still produce a nice selection of similar engine kits.

You need the dome around the valve to maintain the heat. Flame licker is kind of a misnomer, heat sucker is more a fitting description.
i once purchased one of those little pellet burning steam tractors(having no previous experience) as I thought it would be a novel and interesting thing for my dad to run with the great grandkids. I found out that anything that burns fuel best not be run indoors. The back end of it got very hot and as it ran in wild circles about the kitchen floor, the heat from the firebox visibly melted the floor wax in the circular course it was running. I believe it was put away then and never came out more than once or twice.
Nice looking engine .If you have too much heat it wont run ,there needs to be a temperature differance to cause the vacuum ,a flame that gets sucked in is much better also these engines only run in one direction.
Don't use any kind of oil in the cylinder it will only gum up and cause friction ,powdered grafite is best ,good luck !

That should run on a nice orange flame not a blow lamp,check the vacuum
WD-40 IS NOT A LUBRICATING OIL... IT EVAPORATES EASILY.
I use a thin engine oil in my flame licker.
It runs for long periods of time.
But you do have to clean the piston and cylinder often. Carbon buildup happens.
Happens less with an alcohol flame but. Alcohol is corrosive on burners.
I run mine off of propane.
Sometimes i use a engine oil/transmission oil mix to make it thinner.
It's hard to start with thicker oils.
But you want a oil that stays behind and lubricates man.
It will burn off over time on long runs and the engine will get tight again.
You can just oil it again and start it right back up.
Once it's hot it will always start right back up.
But actually WD-40 is not oil at all....
It's actually called Water Displacement - 40
PB blaster is a penatrating oil that actually leaves lubricating oil behind.
Still isn't good for a flame licker bc it everaporates fast too.
But i gurantee if you actually put a lubricating oil in that thing? And the bearings?
It will run perfectly
I gurantee it.
You need a sooty flame, not blue.
And the flame must cover the total hole.
How to buy this engine
It seems like your cam is outa time. Not sure what direction it needs to turn. But it has a lotta suction in the opposite direction. The valve should be closed just before bottom dead center , but how many degrees??? I'd love to have it to tinker with.
Use it to make electricity with while using methane for a fuel.
I should probably sell mine :D
Try a different softer flame. That looks like a great little engine that needs a little knowledge and experience to run well.
Are you spinning it in the correct direction?
