I think something that's important for non-Americans to know is that it's not just getting a large bill after getting treatment. Some things cannot be done without insurance approval beforehand. Insurance can deny life saving treatments. They deny heart medications for people with severe heart issues that they know will kill them without that medication. They deny necessary surgeries. They quite literally kill people through negligence. Not saying the CEO deserved it or that his death should be celebrated, but the message being put out is definitely needed. For the anesthesia, the insurance company had planned on putting a limit on how much anesthesia they would cover for surgeries. So basically if you needed a surgery that was longer or any complications happened that prolonged the surgery, they would not cover it. And anesthesia is insanely expensive. Doing this when the person is under anesthesia and they cannot decide anything for themself is horrible. And one more note, the death rate in America (especially maternal and infant deaths) are incredibly high for a "first world" country. It is cheaper and safer to fly to a European country, give birth, and fly back than to give birth in the US. The medical system as a whole is discriminatory as well which can be seen in not just the maternal death rates but also the even higher maternal death rates of black women. It's not just an issue of money.
