I didn't really like Ton Koopman when I first heard him, but now I have a lot of respect for him. he has a real flair for Bach and his trills and embellishments add an improvisatory vibe that I think is very fitting for Bach's work. (I've read that Bach's own improvisations were something to be heard...) That run at 5:24... Fantastic!
I had the pleasure of listening to, and watching Ton Koopman play in Victoria BC and was fascinated in his pedal technique of only playing "toe, toe, toe...." Amazing!
The nearest performance of the same work that comes even close to this, is by Elena Barshai. I believe, though not sure, that she multi-tracked for her recording. The Martinikerk organ and Mr Koopman are both deservedly legendary.
There's been confusion at times on the identity of the composer of the violin concerto this is an arrangement of. Prince Johann Ernst IV of Saxe-Weimar (1696-1715) was the nephew of Bach's employer, Duke Wilhelm Ernst, and the younger half brother of Duke Ernst August, who was nominally co-ruler with Wilhelm Ernst, although the older uncle refused to share power. Some say that Johann Ernst should have been a co-ruler too, but I'm not certain of that.
@worldcruiser12 I have also heard this plaing by Joachim Pliquet, Arvid Gast An Der Silbermann-Orgel Der St. Georgenkirche Zu Rötha and in Amorbach live If you are in the neighbour of this little town in germany visit there the former Benedictines abbey There is one of Europebiggest organ. It gives you goose pimples.
@advisorC101 In EMS, I've seen lots of deadrunks. "Any drunk that can be rolled, should be." -R.Gift, 1971 ("Rolled" means his wallet emptied.) A drunk patient had almost $800 in his back pocket. Police thought he had been assaulted. If so, his money would have been taken. I think he fell and hit his head on a cement parking wheel stop. He died of a depressed skull fracture.
tres belle registration ! l orgue et magnifique et il est ideal pour la musique religieuse de bach . ton koopman et parfait , sauf dans le final qui ne me plais pas . merci : pierre-xavier de chassot
I am proud to say I am a descendant of Arp Schnitger.
Incredible!!! Where do you live? You are from a very important blood line! One of the two or three best organ builders the world has ever known.

Koopman is probably the world's foremost Bach interpreter on the organ: awe inspiring playing.

Ton, spielst Du!!! Ausgezeichnet! Vielen Dank.
Perfekt...von vorn bis Hinten...Bravissimo...Gracie
Une Majestueuse interprétation !
wonderful in these dark days!
prachtige uitvoering en registratie en mooi tempo chapeau
It sounds like Koopman inserted a whole raft load of his own improvisations into this above and beyond what Bach added.
This is so very uplifting! You are an absolute genius!
Carolyn in Australia. (cazzie511)
Great orchestration!
0:00 - 3:19 Allegro
3:20 - 5:10 Grave
5:11 - 6:52 Presto
Wow.. this is amazing.

Ton, das ist toll!
THE BEST BAROQUE VERSION!!!
+raul reyes There is no other version than the baroque one.
Ton Koopman+ Arp Schnitger: Je telt gewoon Geweldig bij Geweldig op: = GEWELDIG!!!
@advisorC101 I ain't never been drunk. It's 4:48 a.m. What a wonderful work and performance with which to begin ones morning.
koopman is so master!
Wonderful energetic performance by Ton.
Love his manual changes. Nice contrast and relief.
His trills confuse me.
Thank you, AC, for posting this.
Orgue Schnitger : JS Bach con brillo !
The teenaged prince was musically talented and took composition lessons from Bach's cousin Johann Walther, the organist of the Weimar town church.
Bravíssimo!
I call Koopman the "trill-king". And he is. But he is a wonderful musician.
For many years, Kee was organist of both St Bavo and St Laurents. Not a bad recommendation!!!
@robertgift, his trills confuse me too sometimes! I suppose that's why I like them so much! It's like getting drunk.
Perfekt! Von vorne bis hinten
Don't know him, will keep the name in mind. Thanks. I bet, he's a thrill. ;)

No one could trill on the pedal like Kee!
No one could outdo Piet Kee at anything on the organ.

@robertgift, I'll remember to quote you from now on.
Gut gespielt,Klasse.weiter so.
@robertgift, Neither have I. But I've seen my fare share of drunk folks, and it seems like their heads were up in the heavens or something like that.
The crazy thing about Koopmans is that sometimes he plays ingeniously transparent and then suddenly he gets 'sloppy'.
Ton koopman Is the best player for Bach
Good
@advisorC101 Can you please make this video available for mobile? Please?
Personally I'd give that epithet to Piet Kee, but never mind!
@advisorC101 I know what you mean!
Quite good, but I like Simon Preston's interpretation more, it's more light, he uses less of trills.
Koopman kann gar nicht Orgel oder Cembalo spielen. Er ist ein Stümper.
Just open your ears and try to judge yourself.
Martin Möller wat ben je stumper als je Ton een stumper noemt gaat zijn techniek en tempo je gehoor te boven?
