I’m so excited to have found you and this brilliant (for me) channel. I can only read so much before I need to just relax and watch and listen. You may be interested in investigating some of the videos on The Pushkin House channel here in London. I’m from SF and have spent a lot of time at Ft Ross but now live in London.

This lecture was a bit confusing, scattered. When it started, I was expecting a overview of the history of a settlement in California, so the Alaska/Russia company was a bit confusing. However, I did learn something I never knew, thank you.

I served Altar, 4 July 2003, in the Fort Ross "chapel" with Bishop Tikhon (Fitzgerald{+2023}). Apparently the State allows the Orthodox Church use of the "chapel" on the 4th.

And the russians saved the kashaya culture also the Haupt family from germany. If they did not land were they did we would have been over ran by the spanish and ended up like the bodega miwoks and every other culture the spanish conquered.
Because of that barrier we are lucky to say we(kashaya) are blessed to say we have the most intact culture in California out of all of the tribes.

If you read the book written my Mariano Vallejo called recuerdos, he describes how the Russians were the first to illegally occupy California through fort Ross, and a more recent book called “California, a slave state” describes how the Russians used the forts as a center for their otter pelt trade which they illegally hunted in California and used captive and stolen Alaskan natives to hunt them, pretty interesting reads if you want to know more about the Russian history in California
