Whitby is a traditional town, serving traditional food, why on earth would someone put a Wendy's in Whitby! As far as paying a surcharge, that's me out! Another Great video Simon keep them going 👍
What sort of a wally goes to a Wendy's in Whitby when there's so much good real food to be had cheap? They've made a right ugly job of the place as well, hope it goes, it's a blot on the town. Waste of a great building.
That's ok, apology accepted ... you also gave us Taco Bell lol. Seriously, how anyone can afford to eat at these places is beyond me. It's all fast food junk and way too expensive. Taco Bells used to be really busy but with everything costing so much for utility bills and so forth, people aren't going to these fast food places like they once used to. I remember popping into the restaurant bit at Taco Bells when it first opened in the area because people were raving about it. I nearly died when I went to pay. I had the crispy chicken burrito , fries and a diet coke. That was the best part of £20 gone lol. Someone was telling me that the place is nowhere near as busy as it once used to be. They was telling me that they get the odd rush but after that, that's it and they send the staff home earlier than scheduled. To be honest, I can't see it being open too much longer. Within that vicinity, there's a McDonalds and that place always seems to be a lot busier than Taco Bell but people aren't ordering too much off the menu from their either like they once used to. I see people mainly just popping in for a coffee just to get out of 4 walls. One of the women who works at this McDonalds was telling me that they'd all recently had their hours cut and have been told that none of them on the shop floor are to work any more than 30 hours. They've cut the overtime too apparently. It's all to do with saving the store money and reducing costs. When places like McDonalds & Taco Bells are being told from upper Management that they must reduce costs, you know things are pretty bad out there within the fast food retailers. To be honest, who really wants to be eating the fast food junk anyhow. I look back and places like this were always heaving. You'd struggle to get a seat. I think McDonalds, Taco Bells, Pizza Hut are finished. In my area, we now have Greggs, Cooplands, Starbucks and Costa. There used to be 2 Cooplands (they sell sandwiches, bread buns, drinks, cakes) but one closed. They were in such close proximity within 10 mins of each other. We still have 2 Greggs unfortunately. They sell cakes, sandwiches, hot/cold drinks too. Both Cooplands and Greggs are both way too expensive. Even they aren't anywhere near as busy as what they used to be. Cooplands used to be Skeltons years ago. I must admit, the sausage rolls were really nice.
I was in the town at Saturday lunchtime and I reckon a few day visitor coach parties were walking around but weekdays are dead at this time of year. In any case, why does Whitby need a Wendy's just three or four hundred yards from Wetherspoons? Poor market research there, people.
The sooner Wendys is closed the better, it should never have been allowed to open in that beautiful building in the first place. Blame Whitby council......
We are in our 60s.and had a four day break at whitby last week,...we have been coming for 35 years plus..and love it this time of year ,...BUT...just be warned things are starting to happen in whitby, and not for the better.!...we lodged in a b and b in john street...reviews yet to be sent,..so I won't mention the name...But unbeknown to us we had booked into this place that had a party house next door...with young kids partying to the we small hours...Of which the owner knew about and never told us..but took our money anyway...he was very rude to us,and told us to pack up and go..If we wasn't happy.not really a thing to say to paying guests..Thankfully we had just two nights of broken sleep, We did complain ,but to no avail...there was no recompence....and it goes without saying ,will not be returning....Just to say though that we feel that whitby is sliding downhill somewhat, Just be careful if you stop at whitby in a b and b....Do your research, we did...Although that is what I thought...😮
I don't think Wendy's will ever thrive in Whitby. Like you say, they aren't getting the foot fall and people have got less money to spend on eating out at these fast food retailers. It's also a shame that the bakery and cafe have closed their doors too. Like you say, it's a sign of the times. I feel so sorry for everyone that's losing their jobs right now. if only things were different because places would be thriving. It's so sad to see what's going on right across the country regarding shop/business closures.
Wrap up warm Simon. Business is going to get tougher as everyone is cash-strapped and the weather is totally unpredictable. There must be so many other issues like supply chains, availability of staff, Labour budget impact on future costs, high rates etc etc etc. At least the Gulls are enjoying themselves.
@@simplywhitby5356 Yeah, very. Sadly, as many of us know, it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. I just feel so sorry for anyone who's just recently opened up an eatery or a small business of some sort in these trying times.
Im wondering at the moment if there are a few businesses that might go under. A lot of people think Whitby is a license to print money, but like you say Simon, there's a lot of very good competiton around. I may be proven wrong but I look at Pescado lounge and wonder if it will make it past a couple of years. It's a huge building and must have a huge rent, and bills to light and heat it. Whitby is getting quieter through winter these days which I think is related to the economic downturn. People can't afford several visits a year like they did before this crazy inflation started. Papas fish and Chips were poor. Id rather eat the packaging. Wendys burgers are fine, but more expensive than McDonalds and I find the building uninviting and actually quite dirty. Im not sure if Im correct, but I think Papas own the shoe zone building and also the building to the other side that was Alexanders. Now that was a proper fish and chip shop, dating back to the 80's with returning custom, and run by a lovely genuine couple.
Hi Glenn. I agree that the current economy is causing issues for local businesses. I really hope that they find a way to survive and prosper. I guess it's good to see that new businesses like Osbournes have enough confidence in Whitby to open a new place.
@@simplywhitby5356 My Sister has her own business and she was told by the greedy council that she must have a water meter installed. It must cost her a fortune with the work she does. To be honest, I really don't know how she's managing to even break even.

Watcher Simon, well as a Prophet of doom and gloom, you do it with a chuckle. Which is really the way to view the situation. It must be said opening up any hospitality based business is bloomin' risky. After the last budget, it's almost suicide 😢financially that is. My view as an old chef, would have been. Use the ground floor from the old chippy AND Shoezone. Just the ground level and rent out the upper floors for something else. But thanks for braving the bitter cold to keep us upto date on the burger scene. I'd like to find out more about Macy Browns. I do not mind Wendy's when I'm in Leeds for example. But to be honest, I don't crave them when I'm in Whitby. It is a shame, but they have gone to the wrong town.
I love that Whitby hasn't got all the fast food places, but I did think Wendy's would be great for the youngsters. So sad to hear people losing their jobs. Hope you and Mrs M have a lovely weekend 😊
The monoflex job on ladbrokes/custom house is good 😉 Get rid of wendys....we need a Thomas the Baker or McDonalds. I worked in tourist trade 20 plus years and know what they want and this isnt it
What a shame . I am hoping to visit Whitby for my first steampunk visit . Whitby has become iconic for the Gothic and steampunk events . I am sure these events bring in lots of money for the local economy. Plus Whitby it would seem is famous for count Dracula and Bram Stoker.
I haven’t watched your channel the past few months. Did they end up opening up that McDonald’s too? Trust me, you don’t want Whitby becoming more like the urban areas where those kinda places are usually found.
Unfortunately I don’t think this project was ever going to workout in Whitby, if those of the Golden Arches have not tried it tells you something. Wendy’s is more for an out of town location such as a retail park and with a drive through. If it does close I hope the new owners respect such a beautiful building and keep the exterior maintained to a good standard. During all the previous work going on and with scaffolding up they couldn’t even clean the gutters or paint the top windows so it’s all probably a tax loss idea unfortunately.
Wendy's are the poor relative of McDonalds, who in my opinion are a poor choice for food anyway?your at the seaside eat fish and chips, bacon butties,a nice locally produced pie or pasty?
Sadly Business Insider states 50% of fish and chip establishments in the UK are due to close in 2025. You will see more fast food, American or otherwise, or run the risk of empty store fronts.
I know what you mean. The chippy near my home isn't very busy these days. They get the odd rush but even the footfall for that has dwindled down. People just haven't got the money to spend. It's so sad & like you say, we'll no doubt see more empty shops/buildings due to them shutting up shop. I hope we don't see anymore American fast food places or coffee places. The entire uk set up for Wendy's seems to be out of kilter. My money is that the main licensee for the uk is in trouble and it is impacting on the entire rubbishy network. I have never seen a uk review of Wendy's on YT that has been positive. Your own review was fairly negative a few months ago.
How can they get planning permission for those awful stickers. This would not be allowed in York for sure. There is no appetite for one of those ropey stores in our city and Whitby also has taste
Unfortunately the breakfast food was not very good, maybe that is why they have stopped it. I also do not think it will last but you have been negative about them before they even opened. a service charge is NOT conpusory. If you don't get the service you do not have to pay it. It's your choice.
In Sheffield, Wendy's did the same with the old fish shop.
Yep, said it on day one. Wendys was a bad idea. Cant see it making it another 6 months
Service charges are not compulsory. Why pay for bad service
