This is exactly what I was talking about when I said an apprentice would be a powerful addition to your channel. You get to critique the effort positive and actually teach more this way. ❤
I cannot believe you have 500k+ already! I think i remember when you had just a couple thousand or so, your channel has grown so much, deservingly! Still love the positivity and how much you can entertain and teach us so easily. Hope you have a great day friend, Keep on buckin’
Buckin you are a Great Mentor and I know Luke will absorb all the wisdom you impart , you are helping to mold a future axeman and the world will be better for it. Thanks Buckin for just being YOU. Love ya Brother
I love the saw. Took mine for a walk today, lost a glove, little sore, but we’re good. Got to get out and see some country, didn’t even do any cutting.
I got my 31 1/2” axe handle from Buckin and it is about half heartwood… absolutely beautiful! I cant wait to see the grain in this thing, WOW!! Extremely happy with my purchase! I have a splitting headache that I got from doing some treework for trade from an old vet, and he said “if I like axes, he’s got more (and more work).” I want to do a video with all of my Buckin’ merchandise, a patch that is super user friendly, a t-shirt, and an autographed picture that I framed that has an awesome story behind it!!! I love my wife! The end statement is, I am very happy with my experience ordering from Buckin’ the team really goes out of their way to make sure you get what you need (my wife called the store for the right size and not only got the right size, she got me an autographed picture)! Get you one of these beautiful handles!!!
I bought grade B handles from whiskey river and beaver-tooth. Noob at hanging so don’t need perfect haven’t got to them yet. Still gathering tools and watching every axe video you’ve ever made. This was 5 months ago buying the handles.
Love your axe content cos am into Yankee pattern axes on 28 inch handles and split all the wood for my local community who are mainly elderly people Luke's doing good work under your tutelage
Buckin, i am on my second purchased axe handle from the website! First handle broke trying the flick for the first time but thats okay i love the handles and its a learning experience with thinner wooden handles!! Hafting the second handle on a tassie head
Hey bucking I’m from Tassie and our style of axe is the best splitter if you grind it down to 2 and a half inches long the blade and make it sharp it will be pretty thin but it will get very thick very quick and so it blast the wood open it’s best on a short ish thin handle
And be sure to treat your handles with Pine Tar. I prefer a 50/50 mix of Pine Tar and Turpentine. You'll find nothing keeps wood lively and strong like Pine Tar does. Our ancestors used it as a wood preservative for a thousand years, but we've turned our backs on those old ways. Wood is organic, and that means it's turning to dust as soon as it's felled. In order to keep that wood healthy and lively for as long as possible, Pine Tar comes to your aid like nothing else. The natural anti-fungal, anti-microbial capabilities of the pine tar are the stuff of legend, yet who remembers such things these days? Try it and you won't be disappointed.
Some people just break things. I grew up with a kid that could break an anvil if you gave him a rubber mallet. My mom used to say he could walk into a room and things fell off the wall. 😊
If I'm loaning someone an axe I should assume it could be broken. It's my fault if they break it. Unless they took the axe without my consent. I feel the fiskars handle is too thick and it's not shaped well. But I'm glad I got one for the times I am teaching a beginner. I have no issue with heartwood/sapwood mix. I do care about runnout but mostly for others not so much if I'm going to use it. As for lumber. I rive my own. It's not the easiest and it takes a very long time for it to dry. Lumber is precious when you go through the process of making your own. I've actually used some lower quality lumber and you can watch me break those handles haha. Mulberry, very poor pin oak. The mulberry snapped like a twig. I knew it wasn't strong. I had to push it and give it a try. If we are talking good quality hickory it's extremely tough and you can get away with a lot. To me one of the most important things an axe user can understand is that you're throwing the axe head and just holding on to the handle after to control it. When you push through the timber you put a ton of stress on a handle. Skillcult has a great video or 2 on this. You do nothing by pushing on the end of a long lever. All the inertia is within that heavy piece of metal and you're just keeping your hands lightly attached while it impacts the timber.
When I first stopped going to school I worked for a potato grower which gave me a taste for seasonal work . . so I never had full time job for six years out of school The potato grower would sell firewood out of potato season He had me swinging an axe One day I turned up for work he said I bought you something, he bought a 8 pound axe to improve your work over the 6 pound you are using He was right as are you
I bought a few axes just because it have a heartwood handle. Have two Arvikas and two Gransfors Small Forest, one sapwood and one heartwood. I call them the ebony and ivory axes.
Hello, I bought a bunch of box store handles just to teach the kids how to swing. All of the over strikes and stuck axe twisting broke only one. Must be luck
Why didn’t ya bring it over?!!! Haha Something special with that relationship there brother… I got some good vibes from this video and I’m only 12 minutes into the vid! Awesome fellers thank you for sharing!!!
I literally had my chainsaw mill out today putting flat slides on hickory and elm. I then took them into the bandsaw and cut them into blanks. I have some double bit plumbs an arvika, and a sager. I have made a few handles from scratch and am excited to make these ones. Question for you, do you know what the moisture content should be? I believe the hickory is at 18%. Up for any advice. I don't really have access to a kiln. I am loving these axe videos!!!! Have you ever used an elm handle! Not sure if it will be strong enough. The elm blanks are heart wood 😁
Be pretty sweet to just stroll into the Buchin ax den mid recording & get some pointers on your ax hafting work. I think all artisan handle maker's would appreciate the words Billy said about rejecting handles based off things that are made out to be way more significant than they actually are. Good strike technique and care is more relevant to handle longevity.
I mean you have to be a snob to afford any of these “premium” handles like these and Whiskey River trading Co, Stumptown axes, etc. with the abuse my axes take (unless they’re my favorite wall hangers like my Collins red seals/legitmus’s) give me a $10-$15 House Handle any day! The way I can make it look like a premium handle (which is what we all enjoy) you wouldn’t know the difference LOL. Love ya BBR!
If you get a chance to try Australian spotted gum handle you will love it. If you buy one from Bunnings get it home and refit the head. They're barely functional being mass produced. Great channel buckin
Ok buddy I burn all hardwood mainly oak some locust. I use a splitting maul I run 3 stoves all winter burn from Sept till early June always used hickory handles but switched to fiberglass it's just more durable
Three stoves wow how much wood do you burn a season ? I have a single stove and I have burned a lot of wood this year because of the unusual temperatures in Delaware this year. Take care my friend. ♥️👍
I've got an Evansville with original handle from my great great grandfather. I couldn't imagine ever swinging it. I'd hate to snap the handle. You gotta love these old handles. It's a 36" with 3.2 head. It's gotta be 100 years old maybe older. Best part is there is best count 62 rings of straight grain in the palm swell. I could only imagine that all them old handles 100 years ago was old growth hickory. I want to swing it but would hate to have a miscue and snap it. So I must ask, do you think with the handle being so old but in great condition, is it safe to use? I just started watching your axe videos and pulled this old girl out of the shed. I'm actually excited about it.
Let’s be honest Buckin sometimes the handle should’ve never been made into a handle because it’s a piece of Firewood and has an unseen fracture or the manufacturer missed it in quality control
Making 4 axe handles from an ash tree next year after it dries. Ash is light weight and flexes. 40 inch log piece with no branches(knot area). Do you use linseed oil or something else for finish?
Over strikes break any wood handle. Are wood takes skill. I have broken are handles from over strikes. Beautiful axes and handles. Hopefully I can get one one day
The curvature(s) of a handle is HUUUGE! In my opinion, if a handle is done right, they're more comfortable, you'll have more momentum with the swing... reminds me of handles that my grandfather used in the 80s and early 90s.
I will request heartwood from the companies i buy handles from. They literally called me and said are you sure you didn't mean sap wood. 😂 i said absolutely im sure. And i love everyone of the heartwood handles i have.
I made an axe handle out of black walnut 7 years ago for my double.. absolutely beautiful but I broke it 5 weeks later but not from over strike just using to hard and aggressively
I have an old fire department axe on idk what wood but I want to redo it completely chrome, and new handle and have all of my wife's family and mine including me our call numbers engraved on the head but on each side both engine companies out families was on
❤❤❤ 🪵 🪵 🪵 I love my handles I purchased!! Placed a beautiful Plumb on it and started splitting piles. My wrist appreciates the top curve on the grip. Now I can split wood all Day without it hurting. ❤❤❤ Love em

How about this theory?
While doing the flick, the 45° grain turns into straight grain because of the angle the head is hitting the wood.
