- Hi there...
It depends, there can be a number of factors that can affect the results.
Nr.1. "Which version of the game you happen to have installed? (NB!...: Not the version number, but where you got it from. Whether it's a "DVD-Hard Copy"-version or "Digital-Download"-version(F.ex. Steam-version).)"
-
Nr.2. "Depending on 'Nr.1.' it may or may not have the "INI"-folder present in the installation folder for the game."
-
Nr.3. "For the "DVD-Hard Copy"-version of the game, it is very unlikely that the "INI"-folder exists, which means that you have to either use a tool to extract it from an archive file in the main installation folder. And modify it yourself to your liking and preference."
-
Nr.4. "For the "Digital-Download"-version of the game the "INI"-folder most likely exists by default, so you can just get the "gamedata.ini"-file from somewhere like described in this video. And just add it to the "INI"-folder. If the "INI"-folder already contains files, especially the "gamedata.ini" one, back it up first to another location for safekeeping. In case of errors..."
-----
Side note...:
Personally, I would recommend to first set/modify the game/files resolution setting according to your personal preference. Here are a few reasons why...
NR.1. "How powerful and up to date your computer is. That is very important to take into account when making these changes. You are most likely going to force the game to run at a resolution they originally did not intend the game to be run at, that in itself can make the game harder for the system/computer to run/handle."
-
Nr.2. "The resolution you might want to consider depends on the resolution of your Display/Monitor, and of course your graphics card."
-
Nr.3. "The resolution you might want to consider also depends on the size of your display/monitor."
-
Nr.4. "And last, but not least... Your view distance, the distance between you and the screen, that also factors very much into this modification."
-----
NB!...:
When modifying your resolution, it's very important that you remember to modify two different game-files in different locations.
The first one you already know about from this video, the "gamedata.ini"-file.
The other being the "options.ini"-file in the game settings folder under "My documents" for "Windows 7 and below" and/or "Documents"-folder for "Windows 8 and above" on the "C:"-drive.
Then test to see if the resolution you picked still lets the game start up as normal.
-----
With all that done...
Now you can set the Zoom-factors, according to your liking, taking into account what I mentioned about resolution, size of your display and, of course, the view distance.
This is important, 'cause higher resolutions on small screens tend to make things very tiny, not to mention if you factor in viewing distance the apparent size on the screen gets ridiculously tiny.
So contrary to the guy in this video showing you how to zoom out, you ironically might have to, in fact, zoom in a bit for it to be playable without straining your eyes too much.
-----
There are 4 or rather 3 and a half levels of Zoom that can modify in the game ("gamedata.ini"-file).
Nr.1. "Minimum-Zoom, this logically sets the closest you would like the zoom to be able to get."
-
Nr.2. "Default-Zoom, this logically sets the standard Zoom-distance that you would like the game to have when the map loads in at the start of the game."
-
Nr.3. "Edge-Zoom, this logically sets the Zoom to a preset height at the edges of the map. Personally, I tend to set this value equal to the Default-Zoom value. It gets pretty annoying after a while play when the zoom keeps on doing this "Yo-Yo"-thing. Also consider setting these 2 values high enough to account for hills and mountains and/or tall buildings(F.ex. the Airport/Airfield, the building isn't that tall in its' own right, but you got to account for the planes landing and taking off. Keep in mind that planes are locked by skyboxes, so the zoom-height doesn't need to be extreme. You can modify the behavior of planes a tiny bit too, through other game-files. But there is not much point, unless of course you happen to be a perfectionist and you just can't help yourself. Or is that just me? ...he he...)."
-
Nr.4. "Maximum-Zoom, this logically sets the value of the absolute maximum height that you would ever want to be able to zoom out to on a map."
-----
There are 3 additional settings worth mentioning...
Nr.1. "The "Draw the Entire Map"-setting is very important, since it gets rid of those black bars on the map while scrolling.
-----
NB!...:
Combining the Resolution and Zoom, depending on how high you've set the zoom-values, black bars are likely to appear at some point when zooming out far enough.
That being, 'cause...
Some maps are very wide and not very tall, if that made sense.
While others are not very wide, but are very tall. Some having "1:1"-ratio or at least close to it."
-
Nr.2. "The "View-Angle" or "Angle of Perspective" can also help make the gameplay feel a lot smoother. By default I think I recall correctly, it being set to something like "32" or "35", maybe "38", in the "gamedata.ini"-file by default. I've found that setting this value to "45" makes a lot of sense gameplay wise, but be aware it kind of glitches out the cut-scenes a bit. Best to use the default value for this setting until you've played through the campaign(s). After that, for Skirmish, LAN or WAN/Internet gaming, I highly recommend setting this value to "45" as mentioned in the text above."
-
Nr.3. "The "FPS-Lock"-value might help you with potential lag and stutter, depending on your system/computer and how powerful it happens to be."
-----
A great tip...:
When you have set the desired resolution for the game and it works.
And you are about to modify the Zoom-levels.
Start with setting the "Maximum-Zoom" first, and here is the important part...
Set the "View-Angle" or "Angle of Perspective" to "90" as in 90 degrees, a.k.a. "Top-Down"-view.
Then set the height of the Zoom to let's say "1000" to start with, save the changes and start up the game.
Go to Skirmish, pick the largest map size you can find in the settings menu and start up a game-session.
Check the zoom by zooming out as far as it will go and check if the whole map is visible on the screen without scrolling either "Up and Down" or "Side to Side".
Do this over and over until it fits perfectly, without any unnecessary black bars on the sides.
When that is done, set the "Minimum-Zoom" to your liking.
Now set the "View-Angle" or "Angle of Perspective" bact to "45" as in 45 degrees.
And last, but not least, set the "Default-Zoom" and "Edge-Zoom" to your liking.
After that, you are done, and you can start enjoying the game just the way you like it.
-----
Bonus for Advanced-users...:
You can modify the Network-settings and values in the "gamedata.ini"-file too, for a potential performance boost, but only if you know what you are doing, or are feeling particularly adventuresome.
Just remember to back up your "gamedata.ini"-file like I mentioned at the beginning, just in case you mess up.
It's not the end of the world if you don't, but at least it saves you time having to reinstall the game from scratch.
-----
NB!...:
Check and compare the file size between the original/default one and the modified one.
The file size needs to be exactly the same in Bytes/kilobytes for it to work without errors.
If the difference is too big, the game will crash on startup claiming the files appear corrupted or infected with viruses and such.
Even if they are close in size, even small differences can still make the game unstable.
For LAN, this is extremely important...
Different sizes of this file on different computers can mess things up pretty badly.
Found that out the hard way and it was a real headache figuring it out.
But once these files were identical in size, everything worked perfectly.
-----
PS...:
Thank you for taking the time to read through this mess of words...
I hope it helped a bit at least.
-
And by the way...
At very high resolutions you might want to modify the in-game font and size thereof, especially at greater view distances unless you happen to have Eagle-Vision.
You can do this by modifying the 'Language.ini'-file in 'INI/English'-folder under the game folder on whatever drive you happened to install the game.
A final little pro tip...:
Avoid installing the game under the default Windows folders like 'Program Files' or 'Program Files (x86)', and especially on the 'C:'-drive.
Microsoft has an extremely bad habit of locking files under these folders on newer versions of Windows, which makes modification of said files a lot trickier, especially for beginners.
