- When it comes to Thai traditions and culture nothing is more mysterious or spectacular than the annual pilgrimage up Khao Khitchakut mountain in Chanthaburi Province. The good news is that this can be added to the list of possible Pattaya excursions, a long day trip that will show you another side to Thailand, a more spiritual and mysterious side than most tourists get to see.
Between February and April every year, 24 hours a day, for two months a million people hike up the mountain to pay reverence to Buddhist monuments and relics and...well I'm not quite sure what else tbh. The Khao Khitchakut experience has taken on a life and importance of it's own amongst the Thai people over a period of hundreds of years.
In this video I show you the beauty, the mystery and the fun on this genuine Thai Stairway to heaven!

What an incredibly beautiful place to visit.
These are not the things 'regular 'tubers showcase which is why your channel is so special.
Thanks for taking us along and showing us a very special place.
My pleasure as always darryl. Hope you are well.
i walked up this mountain in 2009 and was one of my best experiences whilst in Thailand, there was a monk with a brown bear when i was there and i also signed the red Buddhist cloth at the top.thank you for bringing back my memories.
My pleasure. Glad it brought back some memories of your own.
The most overrated country in the world.@karlsthailand

Really interesting Karl. Another great video. Hope all is well.

Very interesting and a great experience I imagine. Definitely one for our list to visit in the coming years ❤🇹🇭
Please do! It's quite an exprience to be part of it. Thanks
Great video mate 👍. Just wondering what months this is open would love to take the family to this beautiful place?
Incredible work 👏.
It fits in with one of the Buddhist holiday so generally mid-February through March and often the beginning of April….Thanks
I made the trip to the top, was great. Great video Karl I did not get to do the video of it.
It’s great fun isn’t it? Cheers
Excellent....as per Karl. 😊
Cheers Greg.

Hi Karl what a fantastic place,my wife said she went there 11 years ago and said it changed . I will go when down that way .👍
Yes, it's really famous amongst Thais. I wonder how it has changed? My first visit was only last year. Cheers
Interesting and enjoyable video Karl. I never knew that about the red flags signifying the presence of dangerous animals.
Yes, apparently it goes back hundreds of years…I have no idea, I guess discovering that the Naga’s head was discovered in June 2020 left me a bit cynical 😂. It is immensely enjoyable either way and their enthusiasm is a large part of what makes it that way.
Another amazing insight into Thai life. Thanks Karl.😊
My pleasure, thanks
Thank you Karl, when you said dont forget the postcode it did make me laugh, all the best. Ray.
No problem. Yes, I just found what she said about having write down your address hilarious. Cheers
Great video, very interesting glued to the TV wish I was there
Glad you enjoyed it John. Give yourself a rest and then I'm sure you'll be out here soon enough and hopefully up for a small hike somewhere John
Thank you for sharing Karl , enjoy ...
My pleasure Karl!!
Great place and liking the digs Karl
I didn't think that much of the house when we first pulled up but it turned out to have everything and bundles of character too Ant. Cheers
A fantastic video Karl and a must-see addition to places to visit in Thailand during the time of pilgrimage. Thanks for this channel, really interesting to see parts of Thailand that I wouldn’t otherwise know about. I “blame” you personally for my ever-growing list of places to visit and me wanting to book more holidays to Thailand 😂😂
I accept full responsibility for your bucket list lol. Cheers
Cool pilgrimage Kalle. Was there both right and left traffic on the road?
Yes Anders. All the drivers go up and down all day long and the ‘lines’ are based upon the best and safest options at the different sections. Cheers
Right, that's the only place in Thailand I've seen so far where traffic switches between left lane, right lane, and back and forth.
Great content , Karl !
Thanks so much
Love the video Karl ❤ Hope all is well😊
Thank you! All's good Marietta. Thank you
Love this video ❤
Thank you John
Yes Karl, they certainly don't mind a loudspeaker in Thailand do they? You did well to have that conversation with the three monks over that racket! I hope Danny's wishes came true. Haha Buddha not caring about the accuracy of the coin throwing...I was expecting to see John sitting in that chair with the carrying poles.
Cheers Mark. Actually the loudspeakers added a bit of character to the place on some ways. You can subconsciously measure your progress by how near you are getting to the one in front lol. Cheers
Good stuff 👍
Glad you enjoyed. Cheers
thanks for sharing
My pleasure Phil. Cheers
Enjoyable as ever. Didn’t have a clue where it was so looked it up. Not really familiar with that area.
Wish the National Parks / Government would act and reinstate corridors between the mountain/parks to help wildlife migrate and thrive in different areas.
Well as I'm sure you know they did exactly that with Khao Yai NP and Thap Lan NP but yes, there's a huge amount of forest in that area, mainly protected but no doubt corridors could and should be rerstored. Cheers
fascinating, that a location with such mass appeal doesn't appear to be any noticeable mishaps. no stumbled step, ending up on the ground with a tear in the knee of trousers. such a popular place in the west surely would have periodic first aid stations with skilled people on standby. maybe with that many monks present, they have contingencies covered.
Yes, I hate it when people are over-protected and they definitely believe that they are protected by the righteousness of their journey. Cheers
Resident dogs? I thought that a bit harsh, then I realised you meant 4 legged ones 🙂
Thanks Karl. A bit crowded, but it
really was enjoyable to see! The rock formations in this and your other vids, always blow me away!
Take Care... Jim
Glad you enjoyed it Jim. Yes, Buddhists rarely fail to make the most of outstanding natural features. Cheers
Top spot
Cheers Gerard
Are these trucks driving on the right-hand side of the road?
Yes Steve, if you watch that section again you’ll see that they use both sides of the road. As a team they have worked out which lines are the safest and help them maintain momentum on the way up. Unfortunately the was a fatal accident this year…driver trying to give his passengers a thrill, but honestly, it’s steeper than is conveyed camera and they need protocols to keep everything moving 24 hours a day for two months.
@@karlsthailand Thanks! I learned something today.
27 years that tv I reckon
I wouldn’t argue with that. I can’t imagine what would have happened if we’d turned it on. Probably had Back to the Future in the DVD slot. Cheers
a little known or unknown fact is that nobody has ever died on the mountain making the pilgrimage, or so i was told in 2009 :)
Unfortunately someone died this year when one of the pickup trucks turned over just a couple of days before we went up. As for the hiking section…I have no idea. It’s not that tough and there are plenty of people around at least. Cheers
First time I see monks with cellphones😅
I see it all the time in off the beaten track places but agree it does look strange. Cheers
Nice to view through the power of video but i think that would be my worst nightmare. I will leave that and the loudspeakers to the Thai's 😊.
Nice day out and something I'll put on my to do list. It's just a pity about all the money making fake buddhist nonescense.
I guess most religions need to generate income. This one’s a great day out. Cheers
A pure sanctuary?
@slapdogpuppyspank8754 I very much doubt it lol, but they all seemed happy enough and I enjoyed it too. Cheers
Karl, the house is very nice.👍👍🤟🙏
Yes, it has a lot of character. Thanks
I walked up the mountain in 1955
How was it?
Hard 😀
