Karl this is one of the best videos I’ve watched on you tube. I was holding on to my own imaginary rope whilst you descended. The views were breathtaking. Thanks Karl.
It was all looking quite comfortable until that rope came into play. I wouldn't want my first visit to Burma to be via the side of a mountain. Great work as usual Karl, your love of what you do is clear to see.

Just found your channel and it's awesome mate, i'm from Scotland and spend half the year in Thailand. Love climbing and doing the Munro's in Scotland and would love to do some hiking when i'm in Thailand. After watching your channel i'm definitely going to have a few trips hiking around Thailand. Is there any decent books you could recommend for hiking and trails in Thailand ?
Tbh I don’t know of any such books, definitely not in the English language. Most of the stuff I see is from random posts on the internet in Thai. Some of the best hikes are arranged by the National Parks. They’re very good but hard for foreigners to book because of the language barrier as it often involves accessing Facebook pages in Thai script. If you’re here for half of the year you have plenty of time though. Glad you enjoy my channel. Thank you

They've lost a few on Striding Edge as well recently Karl, which I remember us traversing with full packs and head torches, as we were a little late on the trail. Couldn't have beaten the views there though, stunning.
It is a great hike hike Chris and striding edge is a pretty good comparison. I remember that hike well, carried all that kit up and then didn’t use it. As I recall the hike down was tough but we made it back in time for a few in the pub lol
My legs start to go a bit wobbly just walking the South West Coast path in Cornwall; I'd have no bloody chance at this. Absolutely stunning though, would have loved to try it in my younger years.

Snakes don't bother me much and neither do monkeys apart from the fact that they are thieves. Very cool place 50 bht for a pepsi up there very cheap, I am surprised there are not more accidents with everyone carrying their phone in one hand filming. Great video 😎👍

Thanks Mark, hope you are well. Someone did fall in 2017 but luckily survived. The cost of the hike is about 1000 Baht including the hire of a tent and blanket.
Hi Karl, love your videos, I will be travelling to explore North Thailand, I have few queries on these treks. Do these treks need a guide or is it DIY? In case it's mandatory to Trek with a guide, will the officers in the national park help us?
This particular trek has to be through Thong Pha Phum National Park. Actually they might only operate it in the Cool Season. They’re not expensive but you’ll probably need a Thai person to book it for you in advance. Takes a bit of planning but well worth it. You can hire porters who will carry up to 30kg up and down and put up/take down your tent for you for 1500 Baht per hike.
Love your videos. Question, though: I am in BKK and want to go on a trek in one of the parks, but don't know the best way to do it. Are there mini tour ops?
You can hire National Park Rangers at some of the National Parks to take yourself or a small group hiking but it’s best to start early and ask at the HQ. The cost is usually 500-1000 Baht depending on the trail. If you go to Khao Yai I would recommend trail 5 as it’s long enough to be a challenge and has a variety of terrain
You need to spend one night at or near Thong Pha Phum National Park HQ because you have to register your attendance for the hike a 6am and also spend a night at the campsite up on the ridge. Please be aware that this hike is only available at certain times of year. The best bet is to find their number on Google and get a Thai person to call on your behalf well before you wish to take the hike
