You're probably one of the best instructors around, i really wish i could train with you for a few months. You explain things so clear and just brilliant! Been watching your vids everyday, i have no knowledge about BJJ, grappling or anything but i am certainly learning something. Thank You.
Good stuff......I just wish there was more of this taught in class along with the self defense aspect! As Rickson says its fading fast and turning into a pure sport, such a shame :O(
Kenneth Vikse when I do knee on belly in BJJ practice Im always aware of the guy's hand so if he reaches near the balls he has got an armlock or an underhook followed by mount coming to stop that.
Seriously, how could you have not seen that coming? I've used Knee On Belly in a street fight as well and as soon as the guy tried to grab one of my wrists, I elbowed the shit out of him and punched him a few times until he decided to chill out. Knee On Belly is one of those positions where you can not only see everything the guy on the bottom tries to do, but depending on how they move, you can joint lock, choke, or transition to another position accordingly. He turns away? Armbar, back take, arm triangle, punches/elbows. He puts his hands up while facing you? Armbar from either side, head and arm choke (many variations), punches/elbows, kneebar, kimura. He tries to back away (not exactly a shrimp but still the same concept) to create space? Knee ride him and punch him to tire him out and break him mentally. Even if you're a white belt, I still don't understand how you let a guy grab your nuts like that. I mean, just how? How could you not see or expect that coming? It's the streets, people don't fight fair.
G'day Stephan,Really enjoying your self defence instructional videos (demonstration partner included). It is very refreshing to see common sense tactics, that can be employed with practice in potential real life situations. Also, I wanted to add, I very much appreciate your sense of humour and levity, during your videos. It makes them even more interesting to watch. I also respect the fact you bring to light, many of the misconceptions with regards to martial arts in relation to martials arts movies which are very well choreographed in controlled environments with elite industry professionals. Yes, they are entertaining, but as we know all to well, a real life situation is distinctly different. Well gone friend and please keep up the good work. Greetings from the Gold Coast in Australia.
Awesome and practical stuff. I come from a wrestling back and have a number if takedown videos in my channel. The technique you used in the beginning to throw him to the ground is a technique i have a tutorial uploaded on my page. Well done with the video.
I really like everything you showed ! Just as advice, when you are doing the omoplata you have 2 free hands for checking his pockets and belt for Fire Gun or Knives
brilliant advice, ive been studying gracie jui jitsu at my local ctc for the past month and i love it and i also take your tips onbaord because alot of videos out there are poor advice but i feel yours are very informative.
Love all the people who think they know better. If you think you know better then watch the video and jog on. Don't try and grab onto the coattails of someone who's put a lot of work. There's a reason he gets tens of thousands of views per upload
This channel is amazing! I wish there would a mauy thai channel like this because thatd be too good (to have both) but nevertheless this channel is great
Awesome stuff.. That omoplata hold would be great for someone that you can control.. For a more athletic, stronger opponent the knee on belly is something I would go for.. It's good for MMA too..
Very interesting perspective. I think I will try that omoplata setup from mount in the gym if ya don't mind!! The humor in the video is appreciated too. Thanks Stephan,
Another thing to think about if you're going to restrain someone, is that if you have a friend with you, so that you can work together, there are many much simpler ways to restrain someone than the positions commonly taught in BJJ. One person can control the legs and the other the upper body etc.
You make a good point but I would rather knee on belly and have my friend standing and able to react to anything he sees rather than having us both right up against the restrained party. But then, I train bjj so is it any surprise?
Stephan, one thing you need to be aware of when putting someone prone like in the omoplata, especially if they are overweight, is positional asphyxia, as they are pinned face down with no way of moving themselves. A lot of police have been taught to place someone on their side, once they are controlled. Is there a way of securing control, which put them on their side to avoid this, whilst maintaining control?
Great stuff, many thanks. I would submit that the positional asphyxia problem might be a consideration with the last technique. Just something to be aware of.
Regarding the omoplata, I'd be concerned that they are going to posture up (natural thing to do, and very much a possibility if they are bigger than you) and then I'll have to backward somersault or go to a triangle, etc., which I was trying to avoid in the first place...
My name is Jimi, I am a boy of 15 years old. I need advice, I'm from Mexico. A week ago I fought against a guy and that guy is the leader of a street gang. Now, that guy and his friends want to beat me up.They are older than me and they are about five or six or maybe more. In fact, yesterday night, three of them beat me, they gave me some blows in the face and balls, but I managed to flee in time preventing them give me a beating. Last night beat me but I avoid a strong beating. But I have fear that the next time they are more and give me a severe beating. Tonight I'll go where are they to talk to them.
I found the guy who stole my bike the other day, initially I put him in a Thai clinch, I have no idea why. He started to resist so I let go, shot a double oeg, and rippedd his legs out from under him. I fell into side mount then transitioned to full mount , from there I just controlled his hands. It's pretty crazy how helpless people are on their back
I see too many comments saying "I don't wanna rely on bjj in a fight" here is my response MAKE DO: learn basic boxing and mix it up bjj mixed with some other defensive martial art is deadly
Knee on the belly! YES! In jiu jitsu I like underhooking the opposite side arm and doing a spinning arm bar... but in a street fight I think your method is much better. Thanks... Also if you are trying to hold someone down they may flop around and do unpredictable shit. How would you handle that Stephan?
Reak55 I wouldn't but you never know what some methed out or cracked out person would do. I suppose if you got there you could just throw some hammer fists to their head or grind their face in the ground.
+Troll Masters (4Freedom) If the guy has you in omoplata he can dislocate your shoulder at will. You're not doing much with a dislocated shoulder except screaming for a doctor, I don't care how much crack you've smoked.
I'd be very careful with the knee on stomach, since his near hand is very close to my groin. It's not a deal breaker for that position, but you need to control that near arm.
This is crap! The best street self defense is a berimbolo. Nobody will see it coming. That or play inverted guard, or maybe that ass-backward guard that Jeff Glover uses.
Hmmm I am just curios (not being facetious) that initial take down getting behind a guy, lifting him up with the support of your body and throwing him down - is that really effective against someone who is big. I mean say I am 5'7'', 200lb trying to restrain some big guy who is 6'2" 300lb (big ass) would I be able to take him dow this way? What about mounting him - I've wondered if you have a guy who is significantly more massive then you are say 150lb vs 300lb - could you really pin a person like that down with your body to give yourself time to work into a submission or an arm bar or a choke. In a ring fight the opponents are normally in the same weight class but is BJJ as effective if your opponent significantly outclasses you by size and weight?
Takedown that he did most likely not unless you got REALLY low like around his waist because you need his legs to clear the ground before yours obviously lol but YES you can hold a large man down, I'm 6'2 210 and if i'm mounted by a upper belt i'm fucked even if the guy is your size
+CosmoZooo 150 pounds vs. 300 pounds--??? Dude, just shut the fuck up. Nothing will work well in this case, including the dumbass Krav Maga or Kung Fu you're probably taking.
CosmoZooo The best thing to use against a much bigger opponent is BJJ; in real life, it HAS worked for women vs.men and for men vs.much bigger men. That being said, in a match between trained David and untrained Goliath, my money's still on untrained Goliath. Boxing might also give you some chance: it's possible for a small boxer to knock out a big guy. But in this case I would worry about the big guy grabbing me, or knocking me out himself. Eye gouging, etc.--forget about this stuff. It might look good on paper, but it's nonsense dreamed up by people who don't live in the real world. Do you honesty think a 130 lb woman will defeat a 210 lb man with this stuff? If all you're bringing to the party is eye gouges and groin shots, you're better off just turning around and running away. Krav Maga is garbage. The average Krav Maga student couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag, and the instructors aren't much better.
I say (if you think you can deal with any legal action, if any) choke them and get one of these (not a comprehensive list): a back triangle with a locked in RNC, a "boston crab" type hold, a bow and arrow choke position, an exorcist neck crank, several of Eddie Bravo's calf slicer positions, or 2 out of 3 of the crucifix's that all have the same name for some reason - more specifically, the one that Roy Nelson is known for is not that great for this to me unless you're bigger than the other guy. That's all I can think of that I would actually see myself being in total control in against a bigger, wilder, tougher, etc. foe. Please correct me if you think I missed any or am wrong on one. Oh or a triangle choke position from the back, that's pretty good, too, especially if you get the arm and hold it so you have a "shock collar" to use.
daniel213141 I didn't mean it like "hey, we got a badass over here and it's me yall!" I just meant what I said that I choked a lot of people at full power and didn't hurt them so what's there to control - I already did it full power... I like chokes and they seem REALLY safe, even at full power, as long as they aren't damaging the trachea, as some inherently do i.e. guillotine, gogo plata, some collar chokes, etc. Please feel free to disagree and PLEASE convince me otherwise if you have some knowledge that would help me, as just like a scientist, all I care about is having the best answer and not how I got it.
Christian Rankin Just to clarify Christian, have you used chokes in a dojo/competition?I've always been a student of fighting arts, so I have an open mind.
how do you get out of the tactical mount in the street? I cant really see the bridge working, and any variation of the elbow knee escape i know open you to strikes. Yet, i found myself there when i escape someone on top of me on my back. Also, some ideas to escape when your opponent is on top and on your back? Th ones i know let you on the tactical mount (which is better, but still bad)
I don't know if he's got a knife in the other hand and he is able to stab you in the other leg that hits one of your main arties, yeah you will then worry a lot about it.
i think in a street fight you should know what works with your opponent , i mean if you are a 5'7" tall guy who weights 150 pounds who wants to try a double leg takedown to a 6´3" guy who weights 100 pounds , is not gonna happen ...i think you should know what works with your opponent.. and training , training and more training ...the more you sweat in training , the less you bleed in a fight ...well that's my opinion ...
+MetalThunderForce In my experience, double legs and shit on huge guys are easier in some ways, than doing them on short guys. You aren't trying to lift someone with your strength or muscling them down when you double leg them, you're using leverage against them and attacking their center of gravity to dis-balance them and drive them down to the ground. Properly timed, no one can stop a good double leg(or a good takedown), I don't care how good you are, how big, or what kinda training you've had, you're going down.
BJJ is not a great self defense martial art. I trained in wing chun, choy li fut karate and aiki jujutsu. And these 3 arts are much better for the street. Trust me you don't want to spend over 30 sec with your opponent because you don't know what will happen next. That's the scariest thing about the street.
BJJ is fun and all but nothing I'd want to rely on. I know BJJ instructors have good sales lines like if you punch back you go to jail too, or 90% of fights go to the ground, even the Gracie's claim people who say they have styles that are for multiple opponents are LIARS. But I'd watch videos like "boxer vs 2 guys/thugs," and videos about guys vs multiple opponents. Ask yourself would BJJ by itself work? BJJ is a great style for a clear space and vs 1 opponent. Add other factors it becomes USELESS. Plus most instructors teach sport when they claim they do self-defense. But ask yourself, would you rather go to jail or get your head kicked in by a friend of the guy you took down? No one style is enough, learn multiple styles including BJJ, kick boxing, judo. That is what being a complete fighter is about, BJJ players are not complete fighters.
+Jake Gage Obviously you're a guy who's invested a lot of time and ego in another martial art. Look, BJJ is the single best martial art for self defense--period; if you believe otherwise, you're ignorant or in denial. Would it be better to learn BJJ AND boxing AND Tae Kwon Do AND etc., etc. Yes, but unless you're an MMA fighter, you probably don't have the time, stamina, and motivation to master many different martial arts. But it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a few months of boxing lessons as a supplement to BJJ. And you do need to find a BJJ school that has a real commitment to self defense.
profd65 next time you are walking down the street and two guys walk past you,ask yourself if you could beat them if they robbed you or wanted to take your girl and rape her. BJJ wouldn't help you against two guys son.
Jake Gage Dude, you're a punk. A BJJ blue belt could kick your ass. And I'm not interested in the opinion of some nobody BJJ player--who cares what he thinks? You don't think I have friends to watch my back in a fight? You don't think somebody who jumps in is going to pay for it? Here's the deal: anybody who fights in the street without friends watching his back is a fool--NO MATTER WHAT HIS MARTIAL ART IS. You can fight a guy one-on-one with your kick boxing, but as soon as you clinch or go the the ground, one of the guy's buddies is going to seize the opportunity to jump in if you don't have friends there. Now, tell me again how effective your kick boxing or Muay Thai is against multiple opponents.
here's where you make a terrible mistake friend, I personally traine a lot of takedown in my opnion it's a great "subject" inside of BJJ. Love and piece from brazil. (sorry bad english).
You did right by not grappling a dirty druggie because he might have needles in his pocket or something and u catch a disease because some stupid stuff
If you do not want to kill them use Aikido! as for sitting on them that is stupid. to control them learn Ju-jutsu! or Ninjutsu. You should put him on his front not his back, on his back he has more weapons. A Friend of mine a 9th Dan in Ninjutsu controlled and escorted two Pakistanis in pain in Manchester UK, from a cinema to security 300 meters after they attacked a man in the cinema. When he got there he dumped on on top of the other and pined them, he is 154lbs! the security came with 6 guys the head guy could only say “er well done!” as the others looked on in amazement. The movie he had gone to watch was a a James Bond movie. He said it was the interactive version!
Tesshin ryū Dojo this is jiu-jitsu. Stephen Kesting is a black belt in jiu-jitsu. ninjitsu is Bullshit. your friends story is bull shit. and aikido is bull shit. if it worked then it would have made its appearance in the first ufc when there was no rules. but it like every other bs martial art like Krav Maga and Kung fu, nunjitsu did not show up, because it is bull shit and does not actually work.

Haha! You called it a "total Gong Show". I saw my childhood flash before my eyes! Thanks for all your videos.

it is possible, to use bjj with more than one opponent?
Omaplata it is! Thanks, Stephan! :-)
Can't u suplex them on concrete?
OMG ! the lebell lock
4:57 well, and now let's buy new trousers !!
excellent thanks
1:33 but he can still hit me with elbows in the ribs and in the liver. What can I do to defend that stuff?
nice video
ne1 knows if there's a name for the technique at 1:21 and is it possible to go for neck choke instead of bearhug?
cheers
armdrag to back :)
if he wanted to go for a choke there i am sure he could ( rnc , collar checks, both there easily )
yeah this might work if they are smaller and weaker, but I can't see it working on a bigger person or anyone who knows how to fight.
omoplata+power half = nowhere to go even if they are inspired to roll forward
Awesome!
thank you
So basicly you are saying headlock < knee on stomach < mount < submissions hold. Thats the BJJ meta.
nice, I like it
haha hear everything he's thinking. good video, thanks for upload
I was waiting for this, I'd give it two likes if I could! :]
This is why Judo is best for street defense
The knee on belly is more effective when you wrap your whole shin around his belly like a belt
I don't know if he's got a knife in the other hand and he is able to stab you in the other leg that hits one of your main arties, yeah you will then worry a lot about it.
SteelCity1981 you also dont if world war 3 is gonna brake out
If you have another friend you can take turns practicing submissions. Lol
Technical mount aka the toaster 🤣💯
Great techniques but Hapkido is much easier to apply on these cases.
Hahaha hear everything he's thinking... you might have a gift... or is that just a thing that you get when you reach black belt in bjj?
Right when the sirens go he says "it's like a cop..."
Cool business.
i think in a street fight you should know what works with your opponent , i mean if you are a 5'7" tall guy who weights 150 pounds who wants to try a double leg takedown to a 6´3" guy who weights 100 pounds , is not gonna happen ...i think you should know what works with your opponent.. and training , training and more training ...the more you sweat in training , the less you bleed in a fight ...well that's my opinion ...
I'm assuming you meant a 6'3", 200 pound guy, because a 100 pound guy of that height would be ridiculously easy to take down.
Nicholas Bouchard yeah , keyboard mistake ...but you understood my point ...
Just making sure :P
Zombie apocalypse: the future UFC: 1:10.
John 14:21
concrete can't be all that forgiving on the knees
Damn straight, but in that situation you just put up with stuff like that.
You wrong, best way to win a street fight is pull reverse de la riva and go to kiss of the dragon
Look four of his guys are coming. Hilarious :D
nice! :)
+Amaury Andrés search jiu jitsu street fight on RUclips, lots of people are "retarted" enough to use it.
+Jake Gage
Obviously you're a guy who's invested a lot of time and ego in another martial art. And you do need to find a BJJ school that has a real commitment to self defense.
profd65 oh and this you should read too www.bjjee.com/articles/bjj-black-belts-point-of-view-why-jiu-jitsu-is-not-suitable-for-street-fighting/
profd65 next time you are walking down the street and two guys walk past you,ask yourself if you could beat them if they robbed you or wanted to take your girl and rape her. BJJ wouldn't help you against two guys son.

Dude, you're a punk.

I feel like most people will just get on top of you and hit you or try to strangle you with their hands and if that's the case armbar city lol :)
Or you could learn Japanese Jiu Jitsu controlling techniques.
Crackheads have the best benchpress mount escapes.
100% helio approved.
coulda woulda shoulda. lmao!
1:32 Really U can hear everything he's thinking...So you read minds now lol
it was a joke :P
If he was gonna pull a knife he'd do it before the ground dude
Everyone knows BJJ guys don't know takedowns in the first place. :)
here's where you make a terrible mistake friend, I personally traine a lot of takedown in my opnion it's a great "subject" inside of BJJ. Love and piece from brazil. (sorry bad english).
You did right by not grappling a dirty druggie because he might have needles in his pocket or something and u catch a disease because some stupid stuff
:)
Tesshin ryū Dojo that was jiu jitsu...
Sorry to hear you had to deal with criminal scum Stephan, some serious scum bags out there.
