I painted my bathroom last summer a bold exquisite coral from Behr called Guava Jelly and while I was a little hesitant with the nagging voices of resale value and general appeal I am so happy that I went for it. The color exudes so much exuberance and radiates warmth and also adds a nice sun kissed glow when I look in the mirror, but most importantly it taught me for $30 go for it. Go for the color that makes your heart sing and your mind craving to be in that space. Get samples if you’re on the fence and see how a different color could look in that space but you don’t know until you try out and what’s the worse case scenario is you repaint it again. Neutrals are nice at times but it’s also fun to have something that speaks to the vibrancy within yourself. I know we’re not all basic beige and wallflower white on the inside!

These yearly color trends are fun to look at, but I find pale walls much more restful. They serve as a great backdrop for more saturated colors in furniture, art and fabrics.

I dream of eventually redoing my two bathrooms' walls in glass mosaic or zellige, but the rest of my condo is a pale neutral version of robin's egg blue with the art studio a neutral grey (a lighter 3 instead of 5), all with bright white ceilings, doors and trim, walls for bookcases and artwork, furniture a mix, though I will go white modern when I get to redoing the wide galley kitchen on the opposite side of the living room from the window. Wall space was prioritized in unit choice after starving for it previously.

I don't know about other people, but I can't wait to bring in bright bold colors into my home. As a tail-end millenial I was finally able to move from renting to owning this last year. I'm slowly but surely knocking out those home projects including painting room by room. So far I painted my husband's office, and the guest bathroom, next is my sons' nursery. When people ask my plans and I explain the bold colors they look so nervous, but I'm not worried about them because for the first time in my life this is MY home!😁

I totally agree with you Nick. As a person who is unsure about what colours to pair up, I like when the colours in the palette can work together in a space. While the colours from Benjamin Moore are fun, I doubt that the average person will choose them for their own homes. The colours from Sherwin Williams do work together but as someone who is not a huge fan of pink, I would be passing on using many of those colours in my own home as well. It will be interesting to see which direction the public responds to more. I think that the more muted colours will win out. Thanks for doing this video.

Earthy reds and greens don't do Christmas, they do desert landscapes for me: Zion, Redcliffs, I remember driving from Cedar City to St George in Spring and coming over a rise into a valley of red rocks and brand new leaves budding on all the trees. It was magical.

    • @jeanvignes
      @jeanvignes 2 года назад +5

I agree. The high desert of the American West is positively glowing with warm reds, oranges, terracotta, brown-toned clay, and other red-toned earthy colors, with splashes of blue (sky, rivers), green (sagebrush, cacti), and the deep, deep blacks of caves, burrows, and mine openings, starkly contrasting with the sunbaked colors. Georgia O'Keefe added the bleached bones of dead animals to capture a flash of white against the desert reds. Not pastel or timid, for sure.

On France the living room colors for 2023 are:
New neutrals : beige, sand , taupe , nude ( pink beige) , white which nearly disappeared last year is back but in a textured form ( lime wash in particular)
Reds but with nuances , terracotta now establishing itself as a intemporal ( not sure if this word is English) color
Red / orange coming strongly see F&B new color Bamboozole.
Pink powder now moving from bedrooms to living rooms I must say it looks fabulous in a south facing sitting room.
Finally blues and greens in more subtle shades will still be very popular next year.
As far as texture is concerned minerality is growing , extra flat paint, lime wash paint …

I'm really liking the Raspberry Blush, tbh. I went with a bright true orange in my bedroom one year, and with white trim and pale yellow bedding it was absolutely stunning. I can see this new red playing very well in a neutral setting and, contrary to Nick's opinion on this, I actually feel it would go well with some of the other colors in that palette, even if only as an accent touch. As far as the SW color of the year...I must be ahead of the times. I've had their, somewhat similar, Sashay Sand on my office walls for about three years now and have totally embraced the neutral vibe of those beige/pink tones. I'm not hating either of these palettes!

I am definitely more Sherwin Williams leaning. When the Benjamin Moore palette's chartreuse color was being discussed, I became aware that I was actually drawing back from my monitor as if it were emitting a bad smell. So totally not my style, but I'm sure really talented people can make it work. I am not a fan of the color mustard, but I have seen it used effectively. My skills just aren't up to either color!

I happen to have colors similar to Benjamin Moore's raspberry blush, cinnamon, and starry night blue in my home, and was pleasantly surprised by their choices. I also have celadon green, teal, and mustard (for fall) accents. The key to tying these together for me are 1) neutral woods and natural materials (e.g. jute rug, cane backed chairs, bamboo trays, large plants), 2) neutral sofa (light taupe) and 3) oriental rugs and floor pillows that contain these colors. I'm mindful about not letting any one of these saturated colors dominate a room (e.g., not wall colors) and to establish rhythm with the colors through my spaces. These are very warm, happy, and inviting spaces that my family and friends enjoy being in, and a great antidote to drab rainy/winter days.

This color palette reminds me of two things- desert/nature and the real 80s… where mauve and pink was very much a part of the Art Deco revival and post modern furniture of that time. Since both Art Deco & post modern are coming back. Also, I think it’s a reflection on the design modern design aesthetic. Either way… my furniture is mint green and I’ve got red/pink as accent… I tried really hard to not make it look like a Christmas tree.

I really enjoyed this ,it' never ceases to fascinate me that colour can change a space so much .Personally I love colour but like a more muted ,desaturated shade for walls .I always think a very bold colour can be difficult to live with because it seriously restricts what you can put in a room and is often anything but relaxing .I also love colours that blend more than one shade so it changes with the light and isn't definitively a red / blue / green ..whatever .My feeling is that a wall colour is for setting a mood or a tone in a room ,not for slapping you in the face when you walk in .

    • @Nick_Lewis

First thing I said when I saw Savannah Green was baby poop green! Thanks for being on the same page. The problem with Benjamin Moore's palette, is that there is no cohesion in cool or warm undertones. Starry Night blue and North Sea Green are more cool undertones, the rest are definitely more red undertones, and there's is no one colour to pull them together. Frankly, I'd probably use Tofino Sunset as my main colour, then the rest of the colours as accent colours.

I do believe that your preferences for interior color is heavily influenced by where you live. Places like Arizona and Florida have more intense sunlight. Places further north like Seattle and Chicago have more muted sunlight just due to the angle during certain times of the year. I think those bold colors can stand up to that brighter light. As for me, in the PNW, SW colors speak to me.

I agree the BM main palette has too many deep saturated colors that would compete if used together, but one alone would work along with less saturated colors - so it isn't really a palette, more of a list of possible accents. For example - my friend's coast house has a pale blue/gray great room (Reflection by SW) with the kitchen at one end. The kitchen is stark white (upper cabinets and counters) and a deep blue very similar to Starry Night (tile backsplash and lower cabinets). The one deep satured color in a rather neutral space is chef's kiss adorable!

I ended up painting all of my interior doors, bathroom cabinets, kitchen island and decorative paneling above my fireplace the wonderful, color changing Urbane Bronze. It goes well with every paint color that’s put with it (our walls are Sherwin Williams Repose Gray) and literally it changes color in different light. Hi Nick, exciting to see these pallettes! Thanks for your take on it. Awesome of you to use the color wheel to show complimentary and contrasting colors!! To me the Sherwin Williams reads as more traditional, even historic colors when taken as a group. The Benjamin Moore is very bold and reads as more modern. Caveat being Colonial America did use some deep blues, reds and (mustard)yellows, but not bright tones.
I have had success putting bright, “fun” colors on my kitchen cabinets and leaving the walls neutral, warm white(Simply White).
Go ahead and experiment with color, it’s fun! But plan it out and use restraint as well.

So this year I bought the Anne Spiro book called A Life In Pattern.. it's like she had a window into what Ben Moore's colors would be.. when you said it would take a skilled hand to combine these different colors you are so right because I felt like watching this video I had seen all of these colorways in her designs in the book. The way she combines color and pattern is just genius

Probably not the first to notice this, but I like how Benjamin Moore included a painting (shown at 12:07) with all the bright colours on it, and I do feel like they are all working together.

I just realised that I bought a sample container of Raspberry Blush! I recently went in to Benjamin Moore to get a colour that is similar to the label on a bottle of gin :) and as I was watching this video, I was thinking that it looked familiar.
I'll be painting a few small accents with this colour, in a room that has warm white walls and a wood floor. I am going for a (mostly) monochromatic colour scheme that shifts from RB through terracotta to a muted orange so the overall effect will be warm and the colours will be well integrated.
RB is a slightly deeper version of the label colour that I was after, they have a slightly lighter colour called Bird of Paradise that is a match to the gin bottle.
(The gin is Hayman's of London sloe gin... the label is gorgeous and the gin is quite good, too)

I love seeing the paint colors from the various paint companies. I instead of painting my walls all the time I opted for a neutral cream/white color on walls & I use the new colors in my furnishings such as fabrics, art, throws, dishes. This can keep me current without having to paint my walls all the time.

I figured dusty rose, dusty green, dusty beige would be the colors this year. SW definitely leaned that way. BM's choices are boldly surprising. Not a fan of the Raspberry or Blue they picked at all. But I do like that Pea Soup looking yellow green 😅 My bedroom used to be a similar color & I loved it.

I love these color releases because they tell you the trends. That color was very similar to popular beige browns from the 1960s. What makes it new are the colors in the palette. I don't know that some of them come across well on the internet. I am tired of gray and find it depressing. Raspberry blush might make a good accent wall. You are right. The approaches each company takes are very different.

Can I just say... I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Great content. I completely agree with you on Raspberry Blush and the saturated colors. They're gorgeous but I don't see everyone covering their white walls in them. I'd love to see more spaces have bright colors but I think it's something that has to be done very right in order to live with it day to day. Not everyone has the skill to execute that. I think these colors may definitely help with at least pushing people to experiment and add ✨️some✨️ brighter and more saturated colors into their designs.

The yellow in this video is wonderful with the black & grey accents. My previous living room was a highly saturated sunflower yellow; wood furniture looked incredibly luxurious against that hue. The room had been an elegant red before that. I love intense colour; that depth is easier to incorporate into a home with distinctive rooms, imo.

I love color and glad it is back even if I would not use any of these colors. And I hear people say that these color palettes are coming about because of the grey tones people have been painting and I have to disagree. The fact that rooms have been all white or boring beige for the last 5-6 years was enough to have me begging for color. Congratulations on the return to color and I hope that the trend continues with more usable colors.

We click for your entertainment value, Nick!! With the two palettes being so different, it'll be interesting to see what shows up in fashion. SW colours remind me of the Dusty Rose-esque colours I wore in the early 80s. BenjM colours are more of the jewel tones of the late 80s. (PS I think you hurt grey's feelings by calling it soulless. Grey has a quiet, calm soul that soothes those of us with ADHD.) :)

Your colour talks are very good, Nick. I viewed this straight after watching Christina Muscari using Urbane Bronze on her dining room makeover. Colour really changes the feel of a room, and it added a sense of intimacy, which is important in a dining room. It is great to see demonstrations of particular colours actually in living spaces, as well as how they appear on colour cards, so please keep going with these talks. I love 'em!

I agree that the calmer colors of sherwin williams are more the ones people will gravitate towards. I also like that they are colors that compliment last years colors which is smart on their part. People who chose colors last year and want to freshen up or expand what they did without a total makeover will appreciate the choices this year. Benjamin Moore is out of my comfort zone. I appreciate that there are people who like to be bold, but I personally like to feel cozy and comfortable in my home after a busy day and those colors just don't do it for me. Warm woods and softer tones are more up my alley. That's why it's great to have choices😊
