I watch a lot of videos and read stuff about people coming up with ideas to reduce waste and recycle things. There are people out there, trying to make a difference, and it is fascinating to see. I hear about healthier farming practices. I was a teen, in the '70s. I thought things were improving some, with interpersonal relations. I read about alternative health options and was interested in recycling. I became an exchange student. People don't understand that we were starting to get on the right track...until we weren't. It takes some of us a long time to get the message. We have a difficult enough time planning for our future selves. We can't even consider planning to keep the Earth healthy for our grandkids.
We All Need To Take Responsibility For What We Do, It's On Us We Can't Blame Others For The Mistakes We Make Or The Decisions We Make. We Have Ourselves To Blame If We Aren't Doing The Right Things!🙂💙
Wow, Huey Newton and the Black Panther movement. I haven’t thought about that movement in yrs. A lot of relevance to today. The Black Panthers walking the streets armed in Oakland CA scared the Gov Reagan shitless. They did a lot of social good in Oakland.
Humans are, above all, adept at avoiding responsibility and we have been from the beginning. When God asked Adam why he at the fruit, Adam's response was "The woman gave it to me, it wasn't my idea." When God asked Eve why she ate the fruit, she said "The serpent beguiled me." It's hard-wired into us.
Isaiah 51:6 lays this out: "... the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die in like manner; but my salvation will be forever, and my righteousness will never be dismayed." People are people. We feel entitled to wear out the garment, no harm no foul. As foretold thousands of years ago, the earth will be worn out. We're seeing it now. It would be great if all had a steward's heart. But - not so.
Not only do we not realize that we have this power, we don’t even realize that we are okay-or that we can be okay. We get to define how much is enough! But people, even and especially the richest of us, run on fear. There is fear of Not Enough, so we need to make more and more and more. It’s so sad. Love makes us stewards, fear makes us despoilers. Christ shows us Love.
I feel, that most of us individuals, especially in the highly developed areas of Earth, DO know what we are doing. As a group however we develop very convenient amnesia about our power. It is uncomfortable to face our destructive tendencies. It is inconvenient to have to make a change in our comparatively comfortable lifestyles. Those of us in highly developed countries are causing most of the damage. We must do most of the work to fix our mess. Less of us “wealthy” and less of our “wealthy”lifestyle may be the only solution… for the sake of our sisters and brothers, both human and non.
I once got into a discussion about this with my brother in law. He told me we're merely human and we don't have the power god has to change the earth. I simply brought up nuclear weapons. We have poisoned the earth thousands and thousands of times with these weapons. We have destroyed ecosystems on islands and mutatated species that end up on these islands. No we're not gods but we as a society try to be a god. We have to coexist with other creatures on this planet. Years ago after experiencing an abusive relationship I realized humanity has the potential to be the ab***ve partner that wants to control everything around them. We are a small part but we also have the most significant impact on the planet and everything on it.
If I could cue up a choir / song at the end of this amazing message ... It would be "That's The Way God Planned It" by Billy Preston -- 1969 (Parts 1 and 2) from the original Apple recording. It's so perfect. I've witnessed so much here that comes out of those verses. Billy joined by Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ginger Baker, Keith Richards ...
When I think of the environment, I always go back to the parable of the talents. How can we simply exploit the gift we have been entrusted to nurture and grow then give an account such as the one who buried it?
I’ve always wondered why so many people do not take environmental issues seriously and now I believe that most do not want to deal with the inconvenience of being good stewards of our planet. Very sad.
Rev. Ed, if you can, get a copy of, and read, In Search of a Common Ground: a Dialogue between Huey P. Newton and Erik Eriksen. Eriksen was a social philosopher back in the 60s and 70s.
God put mankind in to a garden - we were to be the gardeners of Eden, His garden but we broke the conventent, "The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your people who revere your name, both great and small - and for destroying those who destroy the earth" Revelation 11: 18
I think you're onto something with the question, "do we not understand that we have this power?" But I think there's more to it than that. Scratch a little deeper: _why_ do we not understand that we have this power? because if we were to believe in our great power, we must also believe in our great responsibility [hat tip to Lee]. If we admit that we are causing tremendous change in the natural world, then we are trapped into taking responsibility for the consequences of our actions. Easier to shut our eyes, plug our ears, and say "no! no! no!" so that we can continue to live thoughtlessly and carelessly. Those Christians who would ask, "are we the Earth's keeper?" should consider who first questioned his responsibility to those around him.
The snake in Eden was telling the truth when it said, "If you eat from the Tree of Knowledge, you will be like God." God confirms this later, after they've eaten: "The human has become like one of us."
@@SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans7648 I think in one sense you're right; God acts there as if He's threatened by them, and I don't take that as a literal fear on God's part. However, at the same time, I think it's expressing a truth about human beings-a truth that has been confirmed thousands of years later by looking at the harm human beings have wrought on earth.

Stewards do not rape, pillage, and plunder. They tend and care for sustainably. We made mistakes in the past from ignorance, but now that we know better nothing is stopping us from correcting except greed. A preacher who participates in propaganda to justify greed is an abomination and a sinner, not a leader.
When I was a wee little conservative girl back in the 90s, there was this sense that anyone who cared about the environment at all was somehow "worshiping the earth" instead of God. Looking back now, it seems like an extremely manipulative way for Christians to justify supporting unrestricted capitalism in spite of the obvious damage it's doing to our world. God gave us this planet to take care of. All Christians should be environmentalists. The only way to convince Christians to vote against what is obviously right is to spread a narrative that only wimpy liberal tree-huggers who hate God care about the environment, at which point it just becomes a kneejerk reaction to reject anything that even hints at taking care of the earth. I am filled with dread and grief when I think about the damage we have already done and the repercussions to come.
