    This video is still paying dividends! I'm literally researching this while in the parking lot of a body shop to quote painting the rails. Nope! $$$$'s vs. A case of plastic dip and a few hours work? And REMOVABLE?? Almost a "Well duh," of course PlastiDip. Thanks for the inspiration and 2yr followup for durability.👍

  • @erikfriedel

    Just my 2 cents on dipping an x3 g01. 1. The packaging or taping of takes forever if you want to do it well. 2. The roof side rail parts are a bit of a nightmare as you are spraying blind. 3. I did it outside and insects and other tree stuff became hell. 4. My first can was blocked so it sputtered. 5. I have small damage from peeling off the tape too fast on the roof. 6. The outcome is good but i was expecting better. 7. I think color spraying would have yielded nicer finish. Close to 4 hours for me for 4 layers + 2 gloss but only waiting 10 in between as it was drying quickly with the wind. An adventure they say...

    • @RapidRalphsVehicleVlog
      @RapidRalphsVehicleVlog  3 года назад +2

      Sorry it didn't turn out that well for you. Luckily, I did not have an insect or tree issue. For the sputtering, try placing the cans in warm water prior to use.

      I have never tried to plastidip over a car with the PPF before. I would think t might not adhere to it. Hey
    Just wondering what is the black color if these 3 cans that you use before the gloss one?
    Another question is, why don’t you use gloss plastic dip cans since the beginning?
    Like, why don’t only use gloss plastic dip if you want gloss look?

    • @RapidRalphsVehicleVlog
      @RapidRalphsVehicleVlog  3 года назад +2

      Where I am, we only have one type of black for plastidip at the local hardware store. Just the blue can with the black cap. I do not use gloss at the beginning because the gloss is clear, not a black gloss color. Gloss is a clear coating to achieve the gloss finish.

    Looks good, and it's reversible. I assume you don't use your roof racks. It was painful watching the back and forth spraying technique since I've been taught to spray in a long continuous motion the entire length of the item you're spraying without stopping. I think plasti-dip is more forgiving.

    • @RapidRalphsVehicleVlog
      @RapidRalphsVehicleVlog  4 года назад +4

      Thanks. It does look good and definitely better than the chrome/silver it use to be. I prefer the short back and forth spray. I would have needed a platform to spray the entire length in one spray. Maybe if I was spray painting with an air gun, but since this was aerosol, short and smooth is best. Helps prevent splatters on continuous spray from a can. Plasti dip is definitely forgiving and if it starts to look bad down the road, you can remove easily and re-do.

      @@RapidRalphsVehicleVlog Hey Ralph. I asked around about the topic of how to best cover areas not painted near the rail and the distance from the edge. You leave like 1 inch or so by the looks. I am told that this particular area will see the original coating of the room come off too when you peel off the surplus dip. You say in the clip you need this 1 inch to allow to peel off easily. Any thoughts? Tx a million

      @@erikfriedel Right below the rail is a groove with a rubber seal. You can tape up until over that gap edge. On similar cars I have done with seals, I took a plastic card/trim tool and gently etch/score along the bottom of rail and rubber seal so when you pull the tape off, the plastidip comes right off. Just have to make sure you are under rail portion where they meet. Won't hurt if you score plastic seal area since it is black. I just made sure when I pulled the tape off, I did it at a 90 degree angle away from rail very slowly for that nice, clean pull. Hope that helps!
