  • I hope you find this video useful and saves you money.
    A how to guide for replacing the release handle on a reclining chair, in this case a leather G-Plan. Excellent chair but original handle snapped after 10 years, replacing it with a new metal one
    Although these handles look quite bespoke, they are in fact commodity items with only few different designs, Once you have taken the handle out from the chair it is easy to see and measure it to find a suitable replacement. This is simplle enough and can a lot of money compared to calling in a chair repair specialist or the manufacturer. In many cases you don't even need to move the chair, certainly you don't to turn it over. As you can see in the video it can be replaced using simple tools most already have at home.

    Although this video is a few years old it is super! we had plastic handles on our Harvey's manual recliners and after waiting 2 weeks for the first broken one to be repaired I decided to find a way to do it myself. A 5 minutes search on youtube for some metal universal recliner mechanisms and this video and i was ready.
    Took me mere minutes to replace and saved a bucket full of time and stress
    Thanks for being so helpful and sharing

    Thanks for the video.. I understand how to change the handle, but my chair footrest is not realeased so the cable won't come free enough to give me length for me to re-attach to handle.. so it won't release foot rest..any suggestions?

    How can I replace the release handle with a LEVER so that I can return the footrest back into position before standing up? My chair reclines and puts up the footrest, but does not go back into position. Very dangerous for old people. in other words, can you replace the trigger mechanism with a handle that allows retraction of the footrest as well?

  • @johnrobbins6754

    Hello, how do you do it if the footrest is not up? I cannot seem to get it to go up.

    I have a similar issue, but the cable doesn't have much play in it.

    • @dodeedo
      @dodeedo  4 года назад

      If you turn the chair over and look at the cable run there should be some play to be found

    • @berenscott8999
      @berenscott8999 4 года назад

      @@dodeedo yeah, it should, but this cable had no play. As in the rubber was exactly long enough. To make matters worse, the rubber was coming out of the metal sleeve at the back end reducing the length even further. And I actually took the the left off to give to the right, as the right broke. Just as i am finally putting it on I see that the left has a hairline crack. Go online and order two new ones i guess.

    How easy would it be to put a big handle like you see on a single chair onto a couch/sofa? My grandma needs to be able to put the recliner back down

    • @dodeedo
      @dodeedo  3 года назад +1

      It should be just as easy on a sofa as it is on the chair. The key is to take the old handle off and measure the recess it goes into so you get the same size handle. As they sit in a recess fitting larger ones is not possible, however you can fit better ones. In my case I took out a cheap plastic handle and replaced it with metal one of the same size, much stronger and better
      Hope this helps

    The problem with my chair is that it seems that the cable connecting to the handle is broken, any idea how time fix that

    • @dodeedo
      @dodeedo  8 лет назад

      I replaced a cable with a bicycle brake cable cost around £2.50 from Wilkinsons
      You need the barrel end not the pear shaped end. The barrel was a bit big but sandpaper sorted that out.
      The cable can then be threaded down the original guide to the release mechanism under the chair. note how the old one is fixed before removal and put the new one in the same way and adjust so the handle operates the release lever

      It should not be needed unless broke, a good tug moved the cable enough to get it on. I did have one to break, replaced with bike brake cable, little bit of filing needed to trim it down but easily available and low cost

      if you have the cable where has it. come loose. you should be able to reattach it unless it has snapped in which case easy to replace, I did one with a bike brake cable just needed to file down the end

    I have a Lane-Comfort King (Big Man) recliner.The springs that control,or aid in releasing the mechanism so it will extend out broke.I've looked every where and am unable to find a replacement.So I bent the last round of the spring to make the curve section of the springs and it will work.However I don't know where the spring is suppose to hook to.I've tried every thing,well I guess I've not tried every thing or I would have fixed it (my bad)I don't know if it can be done or not if someone could post a photo of the springs that shows where they go,,I would be grateful for sure.I need some help.
