Trader Joes has really good prices on canned beans.
79-99 cents, that includes refried black beans.
TJ's staples like milk, eggs and butter are always less than any supermarket in my area too.

One Dollar Tree find that folks might want to know about, is the Sensitive teeth toothpaste. Not only is it a lot cheaper but it doesn't have that nasty sodium lauryl sulfate that causes reaction (chapped lips) to some folks. The active ingredient for sensitivity is the same as the name brands.

In essence even at the $1 price point, some items were already priced higher than other stores but it was worth it for the convenience of DT. Now with the +25% price hike it's not even worth it with the convenience factored in.

What not to buy is a great series! Also, another idea I got while watching this, and sort of a spin off of this series: Where to buy your supplies for...1) cold/flu season (tissues at Aldi's, OTC meds at x, cough drops at x); 2) holiday baking (flour at x, sugar at x, decorations at x); 3) holiday decor (lights at x, figurines at x, outdoor blow-up lawn decorations at x); 4) etc.

It kinda felt a bit like we were conned for a while before they waited to squeeze that extra quarter out of us....not seemingly such a big deal all that much ,but when you own Dollar Tree, those quarters add up on the grand scale...And it just made me a bit more discerning ,this tactic seems even more sneaky and deliberately intentional since the vibe is coming through that they're slowly adding merchandise that is a higher $5 ,$10,$15. Price point to shmooze us like it's all innocent! Being a veteran of management in retail for lots of years,I can spot the game from a mile away, and it's not wrong to be in business to make money,it's just the slight tinge of being roped in for a chump in a way ..But I will still get a good deal for my $1.25.Money doesn't just get handed to me free these days .

YESSS thank you for this one!!! so many of us in the DT community have been compiling all sorts of price comparisons now that the price increase went into effect, like you gotta strategize these days and there's constantly shortages so if you can only make it to one store in your area you wanna make it count and make sure you're getting the best price. Walmart and Dollar General let you see ahead of time what's in stock online and in their apps so you can plan accordingly and won't waste gas driving all over trying to track things down. I'm still waiting for more wow factor items to show up for that 25cent increase at Dollar Tree though, and I'm not impressed by the Dollar Tree Plus stores with their $3 and $5 offerings. But it'll take some time.
However, fun fact, Dollar Tree seeds are still 4 for a $1 because it's printed on all of their packaging! It should ring up that way automatically but it doesn't hurt to point it out just in case ✌💓

In the cereal segment I saw to the left Dairy Pure shelf stable milk. And as a big milk drinker I can tell you that this is EXCELLENT quality milk! Better than a lot of store brand refrigerated milk! Unfortunately not all DT stores carry it, I found it once at one of my 5 stores, I bought a bunch of it, but have never seen it again. Some DT stores (none of mine! 😠) carry Gossner shelf stable milk, which is the same milk as Dairy Pure. And that info comes directly from Dairy Pure! I just ordered a case of Gossner from DT, it cost me double the in store price with shipping 😠. PS: Wal-Mart's spring water may be only $1.08 for a gallon, but it does not taste very good.

I was really shocked when Dollar Tree didn't follow Five Below's way of business model of different prices. DT did not have to raise the price of everything in the store at the same time, which as people have mentioned in the comments, is 25 percent on all their inventory. Canned goods, candy, pasta, etc .. still could have stayed at a dollar. I think they got greedy and it will burn them in the long run, as those extra quarters really add up quickly.

I have shopped at DOLLAR TREE for so many years for many of the products in this video. Even when the price went up to $1.25, I continued to shop there, thinking it was still cheaper than other stores. I am SHOCKED at the price differences. I was just at dollar general on Friday and realized they have better prices for the same products at dollar tree, then I see this new upload a couple days later! Perfect timing, lol. I loved the other comparisons such as the brownie and hello mixes being cheaper at Walmart and Aldi. This video is much appreciated! I ended up spending over 90 dollars at D Tree a few weeks ago, those quarters so add up super fast!! And the quality has gone downhill, sadly.

Great video! I don’t know if anyone has already mentioned this, but at Dollar General you can get a 16 oz. box of baking soda (a great non-toxic cleaner) for 55 cents, which also beats Wal-Mart’s pricing. Also, I try to eat organic when I can. I’ve noticed that some natural food stores (like the one near me) sometimes have specials on Annie’s mac and cheese, selling boxes for $1 each.

With the compare to prices you quoted from other stores it would seem that it’s always been cheaper to shop around elsewhere for same price or cheaper before the .25 cent price hike. I too love Dollar Tree especially for seasonal and party decor plus few other items that they have as a special buy. Although not all stores carry same items and with higher gas prices it’s not worth it to shop around at other Dollar Trees for that particular item. Thanks for video!

You are 100% right on all of your reportings of prices. Keep up the good work. 😊 Also, I should note that q-tips were sold for $1.00, for 300 count a package. Now they are sold for a $1.25 with 200 count package. Same applies to razors for both men and women. They were sold at the Dollar Tree for a $1.00 now you get 1 or 2 less in the package & you're paying $1.25. Bad move on DT regarding the few items I mentioned. Consumers are paying 25% More For less product, what a crock of s***. It may not matter to some that have more than plentiful amount of money, but for those who have a strict budget or have children to buy for, it's a huge sting for consumers/single parents. Absolutely ridiculous. Shop smart & don't be fooled. $0.25 adds up when you buy a multiple products. Shame on Dollar Tree for their greediness. 😤😤😤

I enjoyed this what not to buy video. Looking forward to more! :) I was disappointed when our dollar tree raised their prices last year. Some of the items are now more expensive than our local Walmart or other dollar stores. It makes it more time consuming and difficult to save money when you have to travel all over town to get the best deals and with gas being so high.

I was thinking the same. Depending on how much you need to buy, it might make more sense - or in this case, ‘cents’ - to just buy the stuff at Dollar Tree if that’s the closest place. My math skills are definitely being challenged these days when it comes to figuring out the most cost effective ways to get the things I need.

Yes, I found out the hard way when it came to the school supplies for my grandkids I went to dollar store THINKING (this is what I get lol) it was cheaper. Then later went to Target for items that DT didn't have. I was so defeated. NOW I know!! LOL Another thing I will not buy at DT even if they are cheaper there is the batteries! A lot of the items even before the DT price increase were still cheaper else where. I think a lot of time time for some they do like to price compare but for lack of "not wanting to make another stop" we'll get it while we are in DT so there for getting it at DT. I try to pay attention to prices anywhere I shop so I know where not to shop. A fixed income definitely changes things. I hated to see elderly people loading their buggies at DT with canned goods at DT even before the price increase but especially now since the price increase. I still go to DT but I definitely do not buy as much there now. Wonder what effect that price increase will have on DT a year from now... don't think it will be good.

In some ways the price hike at DT has meant higher quality merchandise as far as their seasonal and special buy/close out from big retailers is concerned. For the more everyday stuff, yes, you have to be more judicious when deciding what is a better deal there vs other retailers.

Honestly, I think I like the "what not to buy" just as much as the "what to buy" videos. That could help us decide which products are actually worth more money and which aren't. 😊

My local Walgrens has drink mixes and cereal for $1. Not all have a $1 section though. The cereal is a much bigger box than Dollar Tree. They also regularly swap things in like salsa into their $1 section. Mine's next to the post office, so I take a run through to see if they have anything good.

  • @Gransonec

Dollar Tree has, really, priced itself out of the bargain store market. Many of the items it sells are, usually, around $1, at most big retailers. I still go to multiple Dollar Trees, several times per week. But, I'm conscious of the prices, now. I, often, find myself about to pick up something and then hear myself saying "nope!", when that extra quarter pops up, in my head. Candy is now a no go, unless it's holiday or the Dollar Tree knockoffs, because the bags are a nice size. No more eggs, because they're all 8-ct now. I skip over many items that I used to readily buy. Mostly, I'm there looking for new items and things like T-shirts and DVD/Blu-rays that are still an extreme value, at $1.25. Recently, I've bought 60-count packages of The Nobleman charcoal body cleansing wipes, which are great and a 160-ct canister of glass wipes, which seems like a lot, for $1.25. One of my nearest locations has put in a $3 and $5 item aisle, which is great. I got some oversized planters and a large glass baking dish, for $5. They had some platter stand. But, I missed them. I saw the same one, at Rose's Express (kind of like a cross between Big lots and Dollar General), for $7.99. They're definitely, the better buy, at Dollar Tree. I think, with higher base price, they're going to need those $3 and $5 items, to pull in the customers who, now, consider their $1.25 items to be overpriced. It's the stuff that they, usually, would go to a Dollar General or Family Dollar to buy.
