- A review of my pre-owned 2012 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium with 29,000 miles on it, after two weeks of ownership. It is the sedan version and has a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder "boxer" engine, a 5-speed manual transmission, and all-wheel drive.

Congrats on the "new" used car! As I've mentioned before in your other car videos, I myself have a 2011 Toyota Highlander LE. It has all the standard features you'd expect from a car of that year, including such features as automatic lights, heated mirrors (that also come on with the rear defroster like your Impreza), a windshield de-icer (which your Impreza also has), and a pretty decent sounding 6-speaker audio system with AM/FM, CD, and auxiliary inputs (unlike yours though, it doesn't have RDS for some strange reason, but it does have CD text). Besides all these nice standard features, I really like how Toyota did the gauge cluster on this generation of the Highlander. No matter if it's day or night, it has to be lit up to see it (the rings around the gauge cluster are accented in red, which I love because that's my favorite color), so the gauges essentially become "hidden" when the car is off. Like your Impreza, my Highlander also does a decent job with cornering, because as mentioned before, this Highlander also came standard with 4-wheel drive, which will come in very handy during Minnesota's winters. The only things I feel like are missing from this base model or LE Highlander (but have become standard on the current generation LE), are a more detailed info system (it only has the odometer, and 2 trip computers), and RDS on the stereo.
Congratulations. I've always like Subarus - such strong, well engineered cars.
Can't wait to see you hoon this in the wintertime!
Get some uel headers for it for that boxer burble.
I just bought a 2011 Mazda 2 about a month ago. Touring Blue with only 19300 miles. Love it. Can't believe how much more entertaining to drive and quiet compared to my 2011 Mazda 3.
Every other manual transmission car I've driven has had the clutch grab in the middle, except my 2010 Ford Focus, which, like yours, grabs near the end of the travel. I'm glad to see another car like that! My Focus has an instant MPG thing too, except it's digital, not a gauge, so it's not as instant as that gauge is. Mine also has the upshift indicator, except it works and it loves fifth gear.
love the color
I own a 2002 Subaru Forester.. It's a great car. Good to see subaru hasn't lost any quality over the years!
Nice car!!! I was recently in the market for a "new" car and looked at mostly 2008 Imprezas with the manual transmission. Ended up with a 2012 Ford Focus with a five speed.
Congratulations, you're right, so many upgrades from the Mazda! The Imprezas are nice cars! I know the feeling of getting a new vehicle, I bought a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee back in May as my first car with 133,000 miles on it (it has 134,000 now)! (:
or handbrake when going uphill :P really detailed review, show us some of your old hardware and stories about computers!
great review
Nice car Kevin. I would love to own a Subaru impreza or wrx myself someday. I'm glad that Subaru has increase the space in rear legroom since I found earlier version, the legroom was a bit cramp for me (but then again I'm 6 feet tall).
Thank you so much for the video. I LOVE your car. Love All Subaru's.
Nice car! Never knew you guys had ALDI too!
The extra grip on the corners is the full time AWD. Makes Chimney Rock Rd. a fun drive. The clutch grabbing at the top of the travel is odd for a hydraulic clutch car. My Audi 4000 had a similar catch point, but that was do to an eff'ed up pedal assembly and flexing firewall. I'm surprised that the dealer didn't CPO it through their Subaru store. Oh and bluetooth compatible phones are like $10 on ebay now.
Looks like a great car! I wish the spark plugs on my engine was as easy to access as yours.
Congratulations, you've got a nice car. Interesting to see a relatively new Premium trim car without xenon headlights, which even my '05 Mazda 6 has. Btw I will be making a video about that Mazda as soon as I get around it.
***** The Mazda6 is a midsize sedan, while the Impreza is considered a compact sedan. Subaru's competitor to the Mazda6 is the Legacy.
vwestlife Well, they seem to be similar in size and also engine parameters, that's why I compared them. Many happy miles and keep up the tradition of driving a manual! (I learned to drive on a manual, my first car, a '93 Mazda 323F was a manual, then I got '98 Volvo C70 T5 with AT and I didn't like it, except in the middle of a traffic jam, which is quite rare in our town. The tranny broke in the Volvo and the engine started to have some serious problems (water getting into oil, it was eating oil and water as well and there was no turbo pressure at all) and since it had more than 360 thousand kilometers on the odometer, I decided to get an other car, so that's how I ended up with the 2005 Mazda 6 with a 2.0 MZR-CD diesel engine with outstanding fuel economy of 44-42 MPG while still having a relatively powerful engine with 134 horsepower and 250 lb ft of torque.
I had a 2013 Impreza. I loved that car. I finally traded it in on a new Crosstrek earlier this year. I'm sad that Subaru decided to end the manuals outside of the WRX and BRZ (which is made worse by the fact that there is no longer a hatchback version of the WRX).
We already owned 3 Subaru Legacys and they all were great! I bet the impreza also is a great car
Nice RDS radio. Most US stations use the PS field for the Artist/Song/Station Ident vs EU static Station name. My Pioneer DEH4400HD only offers PS RDS, no RT. I like how yours decodes in lower case.
Mercedes also used to use that same mpg vacuum gauge on the early 190E (my 190D does not have that), and I think the W140 S-class had it too, though it was marked with numbers.
Now there's your elusive new car! I was wondering when you were gonna make a video of it :-)
How are the fog lights working? you mentioned that you were installing them during the Uxwbill show.
My sister test drove a light blue 2015 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Premium with the CVT transmission now for 2015 they did some updates to the Impreza like they replaced they very old sound system with Subaru's new and improve sound and link system. She liked it but she ended up getting a 2015 Toyota RAV4 XLE with AWD.
Very imprezive! :P
now that is a mutha fuckin pun
your car reminds me a lot of my 2014 Forester! same radio and everything. very nice.
lmull3 Did you see this video? Putting the radio in "through mode" makes it sound a lot better. @watch?v=AnYFs6OpGGs
i'll have to try that
Heck you should have gotten a WRX! Nice 5 speed gearbox.
Hey this might be a personal question but how much do the houses in your area go for. I like those backwoods homes, just curious. Thanks
Someone been taking inspiration from Roadkill :P
Pretty nice and simple for being a modern car! Not bad! How's your Passat doing?
Nice car! 5 speed AND sunroof! My friend has a 2015 and im saying how its basically the same thing.. but he has a better radio and no sunroof and fog light area is diff... but, its the same thing.
hey I heard the CVT version's acceleration is too slow, is it the same on the manual version ? This is the only video I've ever seen to review a manual version.
You should take a look at the Chevy cruze, that is what I bought, it's so nice!
Hill holders are the best!
Except when they don't work and you roll backwards (scared the crap out of my on my friends Kia)
They should have replaced all tires. Your tread should be the same depth all around. If the tire is worn and the tread isnt as deep that will cause that tire to spin faster than the rest and thats bad for the awd system.
I have the Limited, am running the Pirelli P7 All-Season Plus. It is a much quieter tire, and available for this car in both 16" and 17" sizes. The Yokohamas have a very poor winter rating at tirerack.com.
thats a pretty sweet car
Mr Benway just rang he want's his tagline back :)
hi, nice review. I wonder for you to take off from the first gear, at what RPM do you normally change to 2nd gear? I own 2015 impreza MT too, and I found I take off too slow (new to MT drive btw). I change between 2500-3000rpm but most car in front of me take off at red light a lot faster than me.
+1m2wgood The Impreza's downsized 2.0L engine is slow off the line, especially with the A/C on. I usually shift around 3000 RPM, but higher if I'm trying to merge onto a highway or climb a hill.
How did it Handle / Drive and Ride comparing to your Mazda 3? Debating on which one to get as a used car both with high mileage(150k+)
I didn't know they still made a sedan variant, I've only ever seen the older generations in that style.
That's a fantastic colour though, not as vibrant as your old one but still pretty sweet!
Turn off the TC and SC sometime see how it corners.
is it difficult/expensive to add fog lights to a car? i know my 2006 punto had a option for it, but the grills where they go into need to be swapped out with ones that have the holes in them.
fiattrickbox It depends if the car is pre-wired for fog lights or not.
If you have the OEM fogs and electronics, it's relatively straightforward, depending on the car.
where did you get the sunroof visor?
It came with the car.
I had never seen the sedan so I just went to the German Subaru website to look for details and prices, but this model isn't available here. Subarus portfolio in Germany is a joke sadly.
Two things I wondered about were:
Are there no rear foglights in the USA?
Why does it say "partly zero emission" when it's not a hybrid or something like that?
Cars in the USA can have rear foglight(s) but it is not required. Any vehicle which is below a certain emissions level gets the PZEV status even if it's not a hybrid.
Ok, thanks for answering! I find it surprising that foglights are only optional, because the improve safety tremendously in thick fog.
Why did you rid of the Mazda? I thought you liked the bright neon color!
Though, how many cars do you have? Seems to much for being single..
mraiwa1000 I have the Subaru and the VW Passat.
vwestlife Still, seems too much. But I guess It's not that much for living on a big property!
mraiwa1000 Depends how you look at it, some people buy used cars and sell them forward with bit higher price to make extra money
Would you say the clutch is heavier than other daily drivers? I test drive one and the clutch was extremely heavy, I think something is broken but of course the sales person said it's fine.
The clutch is a bit heavy, but I'm used to it.
VWestlife thank you for the info.
Wow, what a gorgeous front yard! If you don't mind me asking, where abouts New Jersey do you live?
Central NJ.
North jersey is better :)
How has your impreza held up? I'm considering purchasing as 2012 impreza with 26k miles.
It has been very reliable. I have about 53,000 miles on it now.
@@vwestlife how about now? Still have it?
@@theskyizblue2day431 No. See my update video.
VWestlife should name is Subaru "Suzy".
Still have this car? I’m thinking of buying one in a hatch, 5 speed.
No, I replaced it with a 2018 VW Jetta.
Engine temperature gauge?
No, but it has blue and red indicator lights to show that the engine is cold or overheating.
Would this car be great for someone who has never driven stick? would it be easy to learn? (i'd get the base model)
ANormalPC Yes, it should be easy to learn on.
ANormalPC Still blows my mind that US don't learn this when learning to drive
There again it still amazes me that cars like the VW UP! aren't even in the US at all when they are perfectly capable of being on fast roads... well the UP! is anyway. Guess the US audience just doesn't want such a small car... or something.
m80pls The market for subcompact cars is doing very well in the USA. However, for some reason Volkswagen has decided not to sell any cars smaller than the Golf here.
vwestlife I thought it was because of history of those size cars in the USA, I knew they had picked up in sales but I didn't know how much. And I'm amazed the Polo isn't sold there too! I didn't even know that. The Polo is practically no different from the Golf and the interior is practically the same as the previous Golf and Skoda Superb!
I'm going from a VW to a Subaru.. only cause of low maintence costs and higher reliablity. plus AWD hehe
I still wonder how something can be partially zero emissions, how can it be a percentage of nothing
It's a California thing. When they were looking to clean up LA's smog problem in the '80s, they originally wanted all new cars to be electric (zero emissions) by 1998, and there was a big publicity campaign about ZEVs (Zero Emissions Vehicles) in the early '90s. But when they realized the 1998 goal was not going to be met, they changed it to allow low-emissions gas engines as well, under the name Partial Zero Emissions Vehicles (PZEV).
ahh, that makes sense then. Pretty big ambition to aim for electric only in 1998
Do you still own this car?
Yes.
How do you like it man?
***** how many cars do you have?
the compaq nerd The Subaru and the VW Passat.
vwestlife
ok.
Awww. No more Mazda2? I'd rather have the mazda2. Still, a really nice sedan.
