Without Ray there is no The Doors. Ray pulled Jim up off of the beach of uncertainty. That is when Jim opened up with his poetry, but also his musical sense. Right there on the Santa Monica(?) beach. They were the 4 corners. They were. Just like Nirvana would. A team. Without the other they could not be the same musical band. That is how you know it is solid. If bands keep changing players and genres, they will not make for a legendary band.
Ray is the reason for The Doors. Jim and Ray on a beach with Summer Almost Gone and Ray said Jim’s student movie was great. Ray had already been part of other bands including vocals. Screamin’ Ray Hawkins!
Idk... I always thought as Robbie being the glue, he was the soft understated sympathizer. Ray was the backbone, such an integral part of the music and structure, the only thing that could keep Morrison on the shoulders of the band. 😅
i hope Ray was really in disbelief for all those years. While Manzarek was alive i felt more like he was trying to sell the idea of Morrison being alive somewhere. I look down on that a bit but if he really just had hopes his larger than life friend still around then i can respect that some.
My three year old daughter loves Jim. When she wants to hear the doors, she tells me to "put on Jim." She won't go to bed unless her doors CD is playing. I have no idea why of all the music I listen to, she latched onto Jim, but I understand it. Rest easy, Jim, and thank you for sharing yourself with the world.
Dirty Rice Nova, What a great story to share. And I must say it's because Jim's voice is so different and somehow calming. I think she feels him in her and he was good. I often still go to bed listening to Jim singing, it pacifies me. Dusty the2nd

Saw ray live in Dublin “An evening with Ray Manzarek” front row. It was a little jazz lounge. Played all the doors songs and told the whole story of the doors. Ray was such a legend. He’s more concerned about his good friend Jim’s artistic integrity and mental health than being rock stars Really love this dialogue from him
He was more interested in exploiting Jim's name and legend in the name of profit and income from re-releasing old music and every tape he could lay his hands on. This business of Jim being a poet and such was all horse pucky. Why did Ray put up with Jim's erratic behavior. What went on when he and Jim lived together in Venice before the Doors were born? Why didn't Ray insist on Jim getting help for his drinking problem if he cared so much about him?
Jim seemed cool but when I found out he railed about being able to fight injustice and feeling bad for those who couldn't, I liked him more. He was nice but wanted things his way. I admire that. I would have probably fallen for him. They must have missed him
The last 30 seconds was hard to listen to... you can hear the grief he has for his best friend even saying he was his soulmate. Ray not only lost Jim but lost a part of himself
Which makes it odd that Ray didn't fly to Paris himself immediately when he got the news. Maybe like he said thinking it was a joke it wasn't an option in his mind, but in hindsight if that was me and the news broke and I had the money to fly to Paris on a moment's notice than yea I'm going to find out wtf happened.
The Doors helped me wrestle through a very shitty childhood (wasn't sure I was going to make it through those teenage years). Jim will always have a huge place in my heart as long as it continues to beat.
In fact, he was not waiting for anything but a chance to be lead singer for the new Doors that went on tour in October-December in Minneapolis, Toronto, Cleveland, New York and Philadelphia.. In 1972 they went on a US tour, a European Tour and another US tour before they stopped performing live. No one was buying tickets. The didn't want to hear Ray's version of Chicago Blues.
In fact he wasn't. He planned a new band before Jim ever left for Paris. Jim never knew what Ray, John and Robby were planning to do when he left for Paris.
Just to let you know. I was a plumber in Bevery Hills. and one day I get a call to replace a water heater. Yes, at Ray's house I knew going in but I did the work 6 hours of labor . And it was time for the bill, I then acknowledged him. We talked for 20 minutes great guy
@@tomhefner6344 Amazing bit of fortune there. Cool for you. I’d have paid to just stand by and listen to the conversation. My favorite interview though, was Rays discussion of the way Riders on the Storm evolved from a studio session.
If you listen to him dissect the collaborative process of a particular song, he's usually at a keyboard and playing. Sometimes what he's playing isnt the song of topic and what he's doing - very subtle - is creating mood. Dude was a fine artist.
Ray's a great speaker. "So, Ray... Tell us about the last time you saw Jom..." Ray - 12 seamless minutes, no prompts, no pauses, no mmmm or uuhhhh. Excellent. Very sharp mind. RIP Ray (and Jim, of course).
He made up most of his stories. He’s worse than Paul McCartney in that aspect. The way people talk in his stories is always super dramatic or cinematic and never the way people actually talk. Always plays out like a perfect movie scene. Shame Morrison was never around to counteract that, just as Lennon was never around to counteract McCartney’s latter-day embellishments.
Ace haha, I wish. No it’s actually just that people like Manzarek and McCartney are often contradicted in their accounts of events. Manzarek’s characterizations of Morrison have always, always been completely opposite of everyone else who knew and spent time with him. It’s not a big deal. He, like many other old rock stars, was just concerned about preserving the legacy of his band. At the expense of the truth, sometimes.
Interesting enough, I had the great pleasure to meet Ray, Robbie and John. In 2008 I was working as a limo driver, I picked up Ray at S.F. airport and drove him to his home in Napa, CA. We talked for 1.5 hrs. about his music/and the Doors music. He and Robbie were reviving many of the Doors tunes, and occasionally John would join them. Ray talked about Jim and his apparent death, music, poetry and his Shamanic Spiritual path. In 1969 I met John and Robbie at a Meditation retreat in Squaw Valley (Lake Tahoe). I play drums and percussion; and about 100 people jammed and danced at nights after our evening meetings. John, Robbie and myself led the drumming for the dancers. It was wild fun! I had a most memorable time!
You're so lucky, I only met Ray. Which was cool enough, but I'd love to have all of their autographs on this 1st edition, 1st album cassette that I got from my Dad. Ray's is on it, and he's a great guy. I'll never sell it, either way.
I met Robbie Krieger at his house off Hutton Dr., in Bel Air when I worked for the power company..We were working nearby and he came down the driveway and asked if I could put a street light on the pole we were setting, to illuminate his driveway better. We talked for a while. I asked him if he still performed as the Doors, but he said no, someone else owned the rights to the name. He performed around town ( at the time) with his group "Riders on the Storm". Nice guy. I bootlegged a street light in for him, as it wasn't written into the job...

He does not mention his contributions to both Jim and Pamela's death. It could have been alot different had Ray not pushed Jimmy into something he was not. Pamela tried to stop it and the 3 remaining Door's hated her.
Jacky: Would you explain to us how Ray contributed to Jim and Pamela's death. Pamela was a hardcore smack addict, and probably led Jim to use it too. Jim most likely died from a heroin overdose. Pam clearly died from a heroin overdose. How did Ray figure into all of this?
Ray is really cool and collected this whole video, I could listen to him all day. He really loved Jim though; and Ray always talked about the best genuine things about Morrison, I love that kind of positivity with The Door's history. I miss them both.
I never realized how cool Ray was. I have never heard him talk so long. Very interesting guy. I wish there was an interview with Jim that was this long. I have been a Doors fan for over 30 years.
I remember when I was in the Nam, we had a guy from California who got two records in the mail, The Doors and Brazil 66, didn’t have a player, so that day someone bought one. Rider on the Storm played over and over.
@Joy Rider I can understand why that memory stands out and also why Riders Of The Storm played over and over! I thank you for your bravery in service Sir, for me and everyone. Sincerely my best to you and yours!
No other band has come back and spoken to me again and again over the years like the Doors. It could be a few weeks, it could be five years, it always has something new to say. Music can truly give a glimpse of greater forces at work. These guys wrote it and performed it, a dance of reflection and transformation, a liberation of sound and expression, perhaps even beyond themselves. And they loved it! That's what it's all about baby. May the music find us all again.
I've heard the story before by Ray. It is so sad. So tragic. I was Twenty-One at the time. Have listened unloved the doors from their very first album. Still love them to this day. Rest in peace Jim and Ray.
Man that photo at 6:44, you can really see the emptiness in his eyes, how he must have felt so used up, a has been, at only 27. Tired, exhausted, but that young intelligent sensitive poet that Ray speaks of is still in there somewhere, but the money, the booze, the women, the hangers on, Ray couldn't have said it better when he described how they sucked Jims life force out of him. A photo of such sadness, a true artist at the end of his rope.
Today July 3rd 2020, 49 years since we lost this legend. Still missed to this day, but thanks a lot to Ray for beautifully telling this story as only he could :) RIP Jim Morrison RIP Ray Manzarek
You just know Ray and Jim are jamming again on the next plane of our existence! Imagine how awesome it was for Ray when he crossed over and was met by Jim again. Love them all. What brilliant, fun creative lives they had.
If Ray never had a career in music he would have been one hell of a talk show host, or radio DJ. The guys verbal skills were phenomenal. Probably the only other guy I ever heard that was that literate was James Woods.
Gotta say thanks for some of the most amazing music and sounds, ever. Jim had a unique voice, and his scream was so distinctive. All this was created in the late 60's its hard to imagine. Jim was consumed by his addiction. This story of his death is repeated still, in current time we live in, Amy Winehouse as a modern day example of a voice that should have gone on but was gone far too early. The Doors are a one off, real special man!
It"s so clearly evident that Ray Manzarek really loved Jim ~ he always speaks with so much warmth when discussing his relationship with him I went to Jim' s grave site in Paris years ago ... what an amazing experience that was... So glad I did go and pay my respects ~ Jim Morrison really deserves the love from so many people ~ he and the music of The Doors ~ will be forever revered. .. They were a magnificent group..... I was in Paris back in the mid 90's. Wanted to visit Jim in the cemetery but never got the chance. I see pictures of it now where people take pics by his stone and leave flowers and such but at the same time, I see fencing all around that spot to prevent people going to close. Are you able to actually stand next to the grave or do people jump the fencing to get to it?
Riki, I feel an intense sexual energy coming thought Ray's vocal cords. I seriously think that Ray was secretly in love with Jim. The energy is too intense every time he talks about him.
Ok, so only Pamela and a doctor have seen the body of Morrison, who previously joked about faking his own death. I don't blame Ray for questioning the death, the circumstances are weird as shit.

I didn't see that concert. I was living in Louisville in 68, in St James Ct. We couldn't get tickets. We ended seeing The Four Seasons! A different world of music. You have a cooler memory to look back on than I do.
I saw his last performance in New Orleans. He was “out of it”, high, drunk, falling off the stage. I felt bad for him and made the comment “he’s not long for this world”. This is one time I hated being right.
@pinky-ud1rt: The only thing that MAY have helped him is if he was legally committed to a locked rehab facility - the quality of treatment like Hazelden- where he could not leave for a few months. Giving his body and mind time for the drugs to get out of his system and get his mind clearer. - and maybe he would have been more receptive to being/living sober but I kind of doubt that he would have been successful at that. Sometimes I believe that some things in this life happen for a reason. The reason we just don’t have privy to. Just my opinion.
So sad such a talented poet. I was born in 1964 and as a teenager I had posters of Jim Morrison all over my room. His music is still so loved. RIP JIM MORRISON YOU LEFT US TOO SOON BUT YOU AND THE DOORS WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN XOXO
Nice, thanx a lot and greetings from Berlin, Germany on a hot summer night with cool beers. I‘ve read all the books and it‘s clear that Mr Morrison treated these last sessions for L.A. Woman with a very professional approach that comes across in the final record. It‘s difficult to come to terms with what could have been; Rothchild bailed out because he didn‘t like ‚cocktail music‘ but thankfully Bruce Botnik stepped in. I grew to appreciate Manzarek more and more as he never waivered in his story and his love for Jim. Nice.
I love the Doors!!! I was 17 years old when Jim.Morrison died i was devastated ! Stupid people stole his bust on his grave!!! Anyway Rest in Peace Mister Morrison!!! You and your band are the best!!! A French Man...
I was roaming around London one day and I walked past this old man humming to himself sitting on the sidewalk and when I looked down I swore I was looking down at a well aged Jim Morrison. I got goosebumps and slowed way down and did a double take. It was him 💯 and I couldn’t stop laughing at how brilliant he was for faking the whole thing. What a master of his own destiny he is.
Jim was tired of fame and fortune, he was a poet in an era when stars were looking for something meaningful. Everyone was traveling to India and Kathmandu. Jim walked out on everything and went looking for himself. He probably got lost among the crowds in Nepal or so to never be seen again. A real shaman
Loved him so much that right after Jim died, Ray and Robbie was ready to sell all of The Doors hits to companies to profit off commercials. It is funny, because Jim always demonised the idea of selling their music, and as soon as he died, his two "brothers" were SO ready to make more DINERO
@@aaronmccutcheon Clearly you don't know what the term "loyalty" means. They all made a pact, and as soon as Jim died they broke it. That is called treason. And, please point out where I told anyone how to make a living.

What he said is so true, I am a writer and when I am alone I can write for days. But when I am with people I talk it all out, I pretty much have nothing left and don't feel like writing much. If you are a writer, poet, or singer, you are much better off alone and way more creative.

Jim may have been the lead singer of the band, but Ray was the heart of the Doors. I have read every band member's books. Ray truly loved Jim as a brother. No one can tell you the story like Ray could. His voice was born to tell stories and to play an organ. Ray says here on this audio that when he heard Jim had been buried, he thought , "you mean I'll never make music with my brother again?" I bet Jim was right there greeting Ray in to Paradise and they are there making beautiful 🎵 music again! I hope to hear it someday!
@@scottharrison9083 WRONG, as usual. Robby was the unofficial leader of the group. It was his father who organised the management, financial managers and attorney for the group. Ray championed Jim introduced Jim to his brothers band, where Jim was rejected, and formed the original group. Jisrt John and then Robby joined to form the final organization which was a partnership, each member sharing 1/4 of the profits. Ray was against any sanctions of Jim regardless of his behavior which led to Jim becoming more and more erratic and out of control. Ray then went on to drag every known tape the Doors ever made to produce release after release of even the worst material all in the name of income. He continued to put Jim on an ivory tower feeding all sorts of silly notions all in the name of exploiting Jim for profit. Stop putting Ray on a pedestal. Had he been less permissive, it is likely that Jim and the Doors as a group would still exist today.
His movie wasn't that great. Ray is a serious bullshitter. Other members don't remember things he apparently does. He keeps up the hipe, other members don't.
And I would argue that being a filmmaker is limiting. A director is the precise equivalent of an office middle-manager: the cast & crew under, the producers over you. Even the artform's so-called geniuses like Hitchcock, Kubick, the Coen Brothers, have those pressures. In either case, you're collaborating.

It's always the rubber.
It is what holds the obvious together
Ray is the reason for The Doors. Jim and Ray on a beach with Summer Almost Gone and Ray said Jim’s student movie was great. Ray had already been part of other bands including vocals. Screamin’ Ray Hawkins!
Idk... I always thought as Robbie being the glue, he was the soft understated sympathizer. Ray was the backbone, such an integral part of the music and structure, the only thing that could keep Morrison on the shoulders of the band. 😅
A strange, mysterious end with no clear answers... It's sad, but it seems fitting for Jim.

i hope Ray was really in disbelief for all those years.

Ray was such a legend.
He’s more concerned about his good friend Jim’s artistic integrity and mental health than being rock stars
Really love this dialogue from him
He wasn't that much concerned with Jim's condition. It was Robbie who arranged for someone to help Jim. After two or three session Jim stopped going.
Ray even stopped backing vox for Jim so he could get the spotlight. Ray was Jim's older brother for sure.

@@BeggarsNight So you are this famous fly on the wall everyone´s talking about?

I wished someone helped him then
@pinky-ud1rt: The only thing that MAY have helped him is if he was legally committed to a locked rehab facility - the quality of treatment like Hazelden- where he could not leave for a few months. Giving his body and mind time for the drugs to get out of his system and get his mind clearer. - and maybe he would have been more receptive to being/living sober but I kind of doubt that he would have been successful at that. Yes because there were rumours and he never was so he thought it wasn't true. But no one saw his body either
What he said is so true, I am a writer and when I am alone I can write for days. But when I am with people I talk it all out, I pretty much have nothing left and don't feel like writing much. If you are a writer, poet, or singer, you are much better off alone and way more creative.
I completely agree with you, I’ve always felt that way.
I could listen to Ray Manzarek for hours. What a giant talent.
The music will never die
It's so weird being now two years removed from 27 its just sad he didn't make it. Same rhing with Cobain, just so sad. Life isn't over after 27 , it's okay to live
The way he speaks... I just disappeared for 11 minutes like I was in some other world and when the video ended I came back to earth
Ray was one of three people who voted Jim out of the boand. What he said in public was purely for a cover.
Ray was the Doors cheerleader. The driving force of the group. He convinced Jim to stay in the band years before.
I always thought that Ray limited himself by being a musician. He had so much character and style. Maybe more suited to a film maker.
i agree, but im also thankful for the art he gave us all!
James, yes maybe you are right. His was indeed very intelligent. Loved Ray as well. Miss the Doors. Dusty the 2nd.
His movie wasn't that great. Ray is a serious bullshitter. Other members don't remember things he apparently does. He keeps up the hipe, other members don't.
Well he was best suited as a musician but perhaps he could’ve been a poet too
And I would argue that being a filmmaker is limiting. A director is the precise equivalent of an office middle-manager: the cast & crew under, the producers over you. Even the artform's so-called geniuses like Hitchcock, Kubick, the Coen Brothers, have those pressures. In either case, you're collaborating.
Nothing like the Doors before and never anything like them again after. Legends..🙌🏽👍🏻💕❤️

What a fantastic video. Ray really knows how to tell a story and his voice is just the cherry on top. Great stuff. RIP
I could literally listen to him talk all day he has the smoothest voice I've ever heard
Every time he talks about Jim, I can feel his intense sexual energy vibrating through his vocal cords.
He needed to have his own radio show, what a cool voice Ray had, it made the whole interview very interesting.
Rip ray 😢😣
Just imagine if he did come back from Paris with all the material he’d have! The world unfortunately will never know.
Oh man 😢 the world that never was the possibility that ends when someone dies R.I.P. Jim R.I.P. Ray

Ray was one cool dude. Wish he were still around to continue sharing his wisdom, stories, and music with us…
What a great inside picture this gentleman paints. Great video. Thanks.
Ray & Jim are together now, they've both sunk into the Big Sleep...
