Much like the rest of England things were so much better in Sheffield back then. It’s incredible how many places are crumbling to nothing right in front of our eyes. So sad to see a country get so much worse steadily throughout my life. Where will it all lead to in the end. God help us.
Nonsense. By the 80's the hole in the road was only 20 years old, but was already crumbling, as was the eggbox. Sheffield is going through a huge renovation and renewal right now, and I'm excited to see it happening.
Excellent video, if a little short. Sheffield was much better then in many ways, less pedestrian ways, less students, better parking and many of the old stores etc still there such as Walsh's, Cockaynes ( AKA Schofields ), Redgates, Crazy Daisy, Fiesta etc etc. No Sports Direct, coffee bars and such.

Awesome. Used to pass by that underground spot everyday. It was filled in by the time I lived there but had no idea what used to be until now. Why did they get rid of it?
It was growing unsafe. It was unsafe from a building point of view, but also unsafe to go down the corridors to it (you'd get mugged or spat at or abused) Also they had to build Supertram over it so it was doomed at that point
Due to a lack of Vision, of valuing and maintaining the brilliance that was - the hold in't rd as an architectural modernist phenomenon & cultural asset - Sheff City Council filled it in. There was a more lucrative opportunity looming with Meadowhall shopping complex.
