Grew up on pastina (and stracciatella). I've made it for friends and it sounds deceptively boring but it's not, it's just peaceful. It's comfort in a bowl.
Pro tip: after your parmigiana rind is done providing flavor to your soup (or sauce, as we also use it), chef's perk is getting to eat the warm, soft, extra flavored rind. I swear, one of my favorite things to eat on earth is a chunk of parmigiana rind that's taken a long bath in some sugo. Heaven.

    Yum!
I add an egg or two…depending how big my pot is.
    Just stir it around.
    Adds protein.

When I was a child (many decades ago) my mother would cook the star-shaped pastina as a hot breakfast cereal with a little milk and a sprinkle of sugar! And she was of German descent! This soup looks so delicious, I need to try it, but I haven't seen pastina in the grocery stores. I have found orzo and many other shapes, but no pastina! Thanks!

My Sicilian grandma and great grandma made something similar. I'd never heard the word pastina until the internet. It was chicken stock, Acini di pepe. After it was mostly cooked, we drizzled scrambled egg in and topped with a lot of parmesan cheese. My mom made it, and I made it for my kids.

Acini di pepe is a slightly larger pasta. Now that Ronzoni no longer makes the Pastina shaped pasta, everyone is substituting with Ancini de Pepe

I was married to an Italian for 17 years. His mother made acene de pepe. She fed it to the babies too bc it’s perfect of little ones with few teeth or no teeth. She added different things to it. Acene de pepe looks just like pastina.

      $0.24 to $0.49 each.
