Oh, to answer your questions: Hatari describe themselves as techno, industrial and punk rock band. And yes, Eurovision in general is supposed to be a family friendly show (some families even throw parties while watching it), however since it starts at 9 pm CET, most younger kids are most likely getting to bed already :) As far as how "shocking" this was for the audience: it was memorable enough (in a good sense), to get them to 10th place overall (out of 41), but (at least for Eurovision fans) not too much of a shock, probably mostly for casual viewers 😂 But yes, they definitely stood out among other performances with their BDSM theme and singing style .
Oh, yay! I was one of the ones recomending this song. As for Eurovision being family friendly, my niece has watched since she was three, but going to bed half way through because it gets pretty late. There's really no telling what stuff a kid will react to, maybe the lights would be scary for a little kid. Generally americans are way more sensitive about things that can be interperated as sexual in any way, so if this was an american contest, maybe this would upset some people because yes, Eurovision is watched by the whole family.
If you think that's not family friendly, you should see what Ukraine had chosen to send that year. They ended up withdrawing due to political reasons but they were gonna send "Siren Song" by MARUV
Actually the video you reacted to was at the National Final in Iceland. This wasn't the performance in Eurovision Grand Final. The title of the song means "hatred will prevail"
Loved this. You'd watched Iceland represent itself in a very different cutesy way in the US film, and then this was the Icelandic Eurovision reality ;o)
Eurovision is incredibly diverse. It tends to go out late at night, past the watershed so it's not exactly a family show. You've been reacting to a lot of rock based entries on here but i think it might be time to open your eyes to other genres that take the opportunity to present themselves tele-visually. Eurovision is about performance and staging just as much as about the song itself. I would suggest watching Australia 2019 Kate Miller-Heidke performing Zero Gravity. ruclips.net/video/Eo5H62mCIsg/видео.html Seriously, this will blow you away!
Hi, thanks for the reaction! Just a heads up, looks like Hatari's and many other Eurovision semifinal/final performances may not be available to watch in US, so maybe try using VPN to see the actual Eurovision performances. In general, national final performances (the one you watched, when certain country selects their entry to go to Eurovision) are ok to react to a song, but most of the times performances are changed/elevated at the actual Eurovision (bigger stage, more/bigger pyrotechnics, LED screens, other special effects like on-screen graphics, holograms.. you name it haha). Also, they are allowed to revamp/remix the song that was selected at the national stage up until 2 months before Eurovision (not like the day before as shown in the movie 😂), so sometimes the final version of the song can also sound a bit different.
Also quick tip: If i'm not wrong a lot of the big live versions of recent Eurovisions songs on youtube are blocked in north america, so with a european VPN you should be able to access the better and bigger live performance videos at Eurovision. Hungary and Iceland that you recently watched were both neither at Eurovision but national performance.
"Is it supposed to be family friendly?" - Hatari S&M costumes were all the craze among children in Iceland that year, and no, I'm not kidding. :) The funny thing is that they're devoted family members with children. :) In one of their *numerous* trolling videos, they lovingly bake and decorate a cake in one of their houses while in the background someone reads off hate mail denouncing them an immoral and corrupting influence.
Since we're on the topic of Iceland watch what they were going to send to Eurovision this year, if it hadn't been cancelled. It's called Think about Things by Daði og Gagnamagnið. It truly shows that Iceland or Eurovision in general is so very different with many different styles every year (And if you want to react to an older Icelandic entry that has a bit of a bdsm vibe too and probably brought the sexyness to Eurovision performances you could watch Minn hinsti dans by Paul Oscar from 1997. I just had to mention it since it's one of my all time fav performances but I'm biased since he's one of my fav artists in general)
Kids in Iceland LOVED Hatari! ruclips.net/video/l98Wm_yUBMg/видео.html The point being that the meaning you give to their appearance is not an inherent quality but a cultural construct.
The title of the song means "Hate will prevail". I don't know exactly what their message was with this song, but it has a message. Maybe you can look up the English translation of the lyrics?
Aurelia D the message is that if we forget to love then hatred will prevail. It also shows what they think capitalism will do to the world. There is more but this is just a short summary
Heyy😁 Can You Please react to; "TAYANNA - I Love You" (*She’s from Ukraine, She wanted to go Eurovision 2017 to represent his country but she came second at National Selection) You should watch it and see what did they lose.

Yeah, I think europeans are less sensitive to sexual content than americans. I didn't mind that my kid watched it.
I don't see how this is more sexualized than any video/show from mainstream american stars such as Britney, Beyoncé or Lady Gaga (etc.) though

definitely should react to this but the finals performance
Best eurovision song EVER!

You should really see Siren Song by Maruv from the ukrainian national fina. Of course it’s family friendly, we’re allowed to watch everything hahahah

You should react to netta!!! Israel 2018 final performance.
Most epic performances are Russia 2016, Ukraine 2016 and Australia 2019. You already did Australia, now do these two, you will not regret it :D
