Celine was never a brand known for its menswear yet Hedi stepped in and did his thing. Chanel not having a men's line isn't really an obstacle for him. I also don't think Chanel owners would resist having one of the most influential menswear designers launching a line under their brand. It also makes total financial sense and a safe bet for expansion under his leadership. I think the only reason Hedi wouldn't go to Chanel is that he won't be given total control. And I see why the owners are hesitant and consider it a really risky move. Even though he's been very successful in other brands, dior homme SL and celine are much smaller compared to the behemoth that is Chanel. I really can't imagine having one single person managing all the aspects of the brand like Hedi usually does. It's just too big. Him launching his own brand is also highly unlikely, I can't remember the exact quote but he said he would never put his own name on a fashion label like helmut or margiela. Maybe a brand with a made-up name but he might as well just go to another house where he's needed. I don't see many people bring it up but Fendi would also be a good fit for Hedi. It has the atelier, the archive and a good potential for growth. He might rarely show it but there's some Italianisms in his work, maybe it's time for him to fully tap into it.
Didn’t Karl take full control of Chanel though? As far as I know of Matthieu, he is also very strong on the menswear side. I do believe Matthieu is one of the reasons why menswear is becoming exciting
My main concern is that if Hedi doesn’t get his post at Chanel he will just leave fashion like he did before and focus on say photography again. I can’t imagine him at Armani.
I agree that Hedi is a menswear first designer but that is precisely why he is perfect for Chanel. The LBD was garconne, jersey a men’s material, her love for sports, the 2 tone shoes mimicked men’s shoes, her 20s suits and epic come back brought a boyish silhouette. The menswear and boyishness in his fashion paired with his ability to modernize the past couldn’t be a more perfect fit for Chanel.
this. is. exhausting. 😆 i agree with the sentiment of “what brand has the guts to shut down after their namesake either retires or dies to preserve (in time) their specific design legacy?” how will we ever have the next armani or valentino or azzedine alaia when one can just bounce around every few years as a designer for hire at a heritage house? someone should’ve bankrolled an eponymous hedi slimane brand after dior… just as someone should’ve done the same for alessandro michele after gucci as they’re both generational talents who deserve to have legacies of their own… not piggybacked on “as creative director for…” and for the record… in my opinion, slimane at armani would be a colossal mistake.
“what brand has the guts to shut down after their namesake either retires or dies to preserve (in time) their specific design legacy?” Would make sense but it's not just the designer and the fashion is also countless jobs behind the scene....A lot of unknown people livelihood is also at stake...I see Armani as quintessential masculine elegance....Slimane ideal man is a very skinny, (almost sickly)androgynous very avant garde, prepubescent male at the polar opposite of Armani fit, broad shouldered , ready to take the world male vision
totally agree about the lives & livelihoods that would be affected… i’m an old queen though, so for me it’s more about the art than the commerce. 😆 thing is… the young men who wore dior homme back in 2005 when they were 25 years old… they’re now fully-grown 45 year old men, married with 3-4 kids getting ready for college… and they wear armani… their aesthetic has evolved. slimane’s hasn’t.
I’ve followed Hedi everywhere he’s been - Specifically Dior Homme and Saint Laurent. The first time Hedi was at Yves Saint Laurent, his work was very ‘flow-y”, especially the pants.
Hedi doesn’t fit core Armani codes like simple relaxed comfort. Just look at the men’s trousers… if he goes for his go to skinny jeans, there will be an exodus of Armani clients.
Can we all take a moment to recall Raf at Dior 2013/2014? It was a vision, and his style is essentially the opposite of Dior. Hedi Could absolutely take on Chanel or Armani.
Generally u tend to be right. But that logic that he should go to a menswear brand does not really make sense. In fact his work at Celine was more noticeable for women’s wear than for what he did in menswear.
It just me or does Slimane at Armani seem like such a less-than, such a step-down for him? Slimane needs the Emperor's crown of the haute couture world: Chanel. Or, his own line, but as you said, at LVMH. I just cringe thinking about Slimane becoming the cheap Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors or Lagerfeld "brands."
Controversial opinion: But Hedi for Chanel would shake up the house. Hedi is classic and edgy. I agree with the revamp, and if Hedi was a Chanel bag, he would be the boy bag. IIRC the boy bag came after the hobo bag trend, and if were in a fashion cycle, Hedi for Chanel would be in the lead of the trend cycle. Take my opinion with a grain of salt though, I work in finance not fashion lol
I am still rooting for Hedi at Chanel because he would shake the brand out of its current mausoleum status. Armani is a quieter brand that delights in precision, even in its oversized offerings.
Mary, Mary...quite contrary (I'm just kidding). Looking at the first YSL men's show by Slimane back in 1999 (ruclips.net/video/05aTxv3lORU/видео.html) indicates, to my mind, that he is totally capable of designing looser silhouettes. I think he would be great for the job. Everyone thought he was wrong for Celine, remember? Also Hed Mayner or Damir Doma would be even better, but they don't have the 'name' to attract the sales. Hell, I could do it!
Hedi gets a lot of flack. But I adore him. Loved him at YSL. Although, him at Chanel does not work in my head - but it would be a good shake up in my opinion. Chanel just feels so far gone for me. The accessories look like plastic

I love that you Really responded. I think honestly V Vivald is there to stay. The decision to promote her was very calculated.

It's possible. Giorgio Armani is iconic. If hedi goes there he must like the man. I can see him working for this brand. Why not?!.... ❤

Don’t understand why anyone would buy property in Milan unless it’s for work…

I read a while back that Armani really does respect Hedi and they write letters to each other

I want a home in Milan.
hahahaha, the bottom line of the topic
I am still rooting for Hedi at Chanel because he would shake the brand out of its current mausoleum status. Armani is a quieter brand that delights in precision, even in its oversized offerings.
I actually think Stefano Pilati would be great at Armani. Or Uma Wang?
Why am I the only one thinking Sarah Burton would be perfect for Chanel??????

Listen to the end of the vid
Around 12:00
I like Armani would be a perfect fit for Heidi
Armani will be back onto "hot" brand, again!
LVMH have Berluti a menswear house

I really hope not...Skinny as an ideal is for WOMEN, not for men just too lazy too work out or prepubescent teenagers!
please no lol
