Gary, thanks for the post and that's a great suggestion. I have a few other pilots I fly with and they use a heavy-duty rubber band to do a similar thing. Anything that keeps the batteries from falling all the way into the socket is a good thing until we see a firmware update to sort out the logic.

One of my mavic mini batteries went into hibernation mode, but I always use it so it never discharges to 0 and isn’t permanently on 100, I also use it as a battery pack to charge my phone. Any idea why it’s in hibernation?
Thank you for sharing information about battery. I just bought my first drone mini 2 (2nd hand) and did all the firmware updates on both the mini 2 and the controller. Do you know if it is safe now to store the three batteries in its battery hub? Thanks again.
So how do you wake up a hibernating DJI battery? Do I leave it charging in the hub or drone to wake it up ? When placed in both 3-4 lights just blink and it does not seem to be charging.

Hey everyone I just bought a dji mini 2 But i have problem with the battery it flashing all the 4 led light and is not turning on. Any suggestions? Is a brand new drone.
Hi, if you store the DJI mini 2 batteries out of the drone and either in the pouch or backwards in the hub, as you recomended and let the batts discharge, say down to 40-50%, or maybe less, can you then charge the batteries up to 90-100% just before you fly? Thanks!
Yes, that will work fine. The key thing is not storing the cells at full charge for long periods of time. The latest firmware from DJI for the Mini 2 includes a self-discharge feature to automatically lower the charge after a few days to protect the cells. Be sure to download this firmware to help protect the cells. Thanks for the post! Rick
What is the firmware ver. Of the mini2 When you had this video? Latest is v1.003 something, did they made corrections on the auto discharge function now?
New drone flyer here! Just started with a Mini 2 and loving it but definitely overly conscious and cautious about the battery life, especially since I bought it used. Was there ever a firmware update for this issue?
Welcome aboard! Yep, the latest firmware fixed this issue. Be sure to check the DJI site for your drone under the "downloads" tab to make sure you're on the latest. Also, when you do the update be sure to rotate all of your batteries through the drone. They each have controllers inside of them (smart batteries) and may need to be updated as well. I hope that helps and be sure to sub the channel so you don't miss anything.
I’ve been using LiPo batteries for years and consider myself to have a good grounding on them . Congratulations on an excellent video, very well presented and pitched at a novice to knowledgable person. I think is very helpful for those getting or got the Mini 3 Pro.
Thanks for this amazing video. I got a New Dji mini2 (Fly more combo) but, one of the batteries is not charging, it constantly blinks two lights. Solution to this will be very much appreciated. Thank you.
this was great info because i was concern i just got my mini 2 combo last week have not used it yet. thank you so much you were great , can't wait to fly !!
Just charge or discharge right until after the 2nd light in the fly more hub is on and the 3rd light starts to flash, that's 50% and about right. You can discern going further into that process more detailed if you choose to do so. Happy flying
my 3 batteries - all charged in the same charging hub - seem to not be working. They were showing as fully charged. I put them into my drone and they showed as having 96% charge but they simultaneously said 00'00" flight time remaining. One battery wouldn't even get the drone off the ground "unable to take off" and another one forced the drone to emergency land even though it had 48% battery left. My first thought was that I had put too much voltage through them when charging but now after watching this video I'm less sure. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks team!
Now when I've driven my battery into the ground & it won't charge anymore... Does DIJ have a recycling program? If not, off to the Lowes battery recycle bin...?
So can you allow them to auto discharge out of the charging hub then after 4 days of non use put them back In the charging hub the correct way round? I'm assuming they will stay discharged at around 75%??
Great video Rick, I bought a brand new Phantom 4 Pro that came with a dead battery cause it sat in the box too long and it went into permanent hibernation. Nothing more frustrating than a 150 dollar paperweight 😁
But how do you know if it’s 30% to 40% charge to keep them up in the winter for storage like in my spark batteries that has a button to check what level of charge they have.
Thanks for the post and you have to slide them back into the drone or the controller to check the charge level. I wish they put an indicator on the batteries as well but they were trying to minimize weight. Stay tuned for more clips posting soon. Rick
out of 3 batteries, 2 were fully charged but the 3rd was initially charging but somehow it went cranky with only one light blinking. How do I rectify it? Many thanks
So how long would it take the MA2 battery to discharge after not using after a couple days? I charge them the night before I use them. Thanks Rick for the information.
I had them in and out a few times and they made the slots a little larger. You won't have to do this anymore since DJI fixed the issue. You can simply update the firmware and they will discharge normally. Thanks for the post and I hope that helps. Rick
@@Dronevalley, you might want to pin this comment. I just bought my Mini 2, and it's good to know that the firmware update fixed the battery issue. For a first time user the battery issue sounded confusing, though you made a clear attempt to explain it. Thanks.
Thanks for the post and honestly the best plan would be to charge them the night before so they are fresh the next day for flying. If you have to charge them a few days early because you're traveling, you should store them in the hub so the "brains" in there can monitor the batteries and discharge them after 3 days in case you don't get a chance to fly. I hope that helps and consider subscribing to the channel as I'll have a ton of content posting this week. Rick
Thanks for the post and if you've updated to the latest firmware on the batteries they should now auto-discharge in the hub. Try updating and testing the feature and you may be alright. Rick
Dogs tap, I was speaking slowly to explain the initial issues with the batteries and their interaction with the hub and not discharging. DJI has since fixed this issue so no worries.
I have problem with my dji mini 2 drone batteries i put the battery hub on charge the 2 batteries are charged and the 3rd one is blinking and when i put that 3rd one in the drone the drone cant even turn on what would be the problem any solution ?
I think that battery is shot. Temperature is your biggest enemy with these Lipo cells and just a few hours in a cold or hot car can kill them. If you pop it into the drone after charging and it won't power up, it's time to replace it unfortunately. Be sure to recycle it at a Home Depot or local hardware store. Lipo cells can ignite if damaged and burn incredibly hot.
If your leave the batteries on the 6 way white charger unplugged the 4 batteries will auto discharge as normal. You can also discharge the batteries it appears with the 6 way charge if you plug them in with it disconnected but have to test further. It appears the pins must be pushed in for the batteries to auto discharge now...
have 2 batteries. one was stored in drone, everything fine. one was stored alone without any contacts. its faulty now after one year storing. 4 flashing LED issue.
I'm just bought Mini 2 single. But as experienced enthusiastic RC Hobbyist, I always charged my battery about 2-3 bars and pulled out & put it outside from the drone as I treated the drone as my other rc, especially common rc LiPO battery. Never experienced a fire but already had swelling lipo experienced. Though I did not stored them on LiPO safety pack or other unflameable storage box tho. Haha
Aaron, thanks for the post and we have them on the site here - www.dronevalley.com/store/p290/DJI_Mavic_Mini_%2F_Mini_2_-_Custom__Safety_Battery_Bag.html. We normally stock these heavt but are out of the dual and triple until Thursday this week with a new order arriving. We ship the same day they arrive and I appreciate your business!
I saw someone that used para-cord wrapped around the batteries that blocked contact with the charging hub which would allow you still store them in the hub but allow them to discharge like they are designed to.
Patrick, thanks for the post and the suggestion. I've had a few friends use a large rubber band to do the same thing and they both work. I just flip mine around in the hub and it's been working fine for me. I'm sure DJi is hard at work on a firmware update for this so stay tuned! Rick
@@Dronevalley well, they are not designed to be flipped around, there is a guideline on one of the sides, i personally don’t wanne force them in the smart case. But thanks for the tips.
@@AngelusHD Thanks for the post and it is a little tight at first but works OK. You can always use a rubber band on the top to keep them sliding all the way in. The best option is to use a triple Lipo safety bag to keep them safe for discharge.
Maybe it’d be helpful to edit the title of the video adding the issue has been fixed by DJI. From the recent comments and the ever more exposure to the drone market, people may find this video confused, but the video still serves as part of the history
Good information Rick. I have placed the LiPO batteries into the hub, but not clicked them in all the way. After a couple days, I pushed them all the way in and they were all at 3 lights after starting fully charged at 4 lights. I hesitate to put them in the hub backwards for fear of warping the hub. Maybe a problem, maybe not. Anyway, that's what I found... Thanks for your great information....
Dennis, as long as they are not fully inserted into the hub and making contact, they will discharge as normal. It's only when they touch those contacts that the battery has to stay "awake" in case the power button is pressed. Thanks for the post and happy flying! Rick
If you put a mini 2 in RTH while in sports mode will it fly faster than if you did RTH in normal mode ? Sometimes the wind will take it over in normal while flying but when you go into sport it goes right through the wind. So if RTH used the sport mode power it would be a better chance on making it back..
Beyond topic really. But the reason is allowed attack angle rather than motor power. RTH is its own mode though so if in sports mode, you're no longer in RTH and flying it back yourself.
@@danman32 I know it's not the topic but nobody answers questions on any other channels so I just wanted to try. But I knew it had nothing to do with the video.. 😏
TapSnap - As Dan has mentioned, RTH is it's own "special" mode that isn't affected by the settings in the controller. When that feature is triggered, the drone locks down all control and heads for the takeoff point to land. it doesn't really care what the pilot is doing or what settings are in the controller except for the RTH height. You have to be sure this is set above any obstacle in the area so you don't have issues on the way home. Thanks for the post and I hope you'll stop back soon. Rick
Thank you! I'm want to use this for prospecting, so I'm thinking of getting the mini 2 fly-more package, then ordering a spare Mini 1 battery so I can always have one battery that is topped off. I can keep the mini 2 batteries at 50% so as not to damage them, and if I need to get in the air unexpectedly I can use the lithium-ion while I'm topping off the 3 lithium polymer batteries.
Thanks for the post and it's a tricky answer. If you leave the battery in the Air 2S it will auto-discharge normally so no worries about the charge. Where it gets tricky is that the auto-discharge produces some heat and that's never a good thing for the quad. It's small, but over time it worries me that it might unnecessarily fatigue the quad. The other concern is that if a battery does decide to go non-linear and misbehave, if it's out of the quad, you've only lost a battery. if it's inside the quad you've lost everything. To put this into perspective, I have a ton of quads in the shop and literally a hundred or more Lipo cells. I've been flying for years with a lot of other pilots and have never had, or heard of a Lipo fire with any of them. Its a rare issue, but like with home fires, we have to be careful because of the possibility. I hope that helps and my advice is always to fly more and worry less. Rick
Did DJI release a fix already? I recently bought the mini 2 and am flying it almost evey day so I cant leave the batteries for 3-5 days to see if they will auto discharge :D
You have to tell me which of the LED's are blinking 3 times. Looking at the battery with the button on the right, the LED on the left is number 1. When I know which one is blinking, I can tell you the issue. Rick
Hi, what did I do wrong? I charged all three batteries in the charging hub all morning, went to a birthday party in the afternoon that I was going to film… And my charging hub discharged all three of my batteries right down to critical position, The first time this happened it discharged one battery, this time it discharged all 3, Not sure why this happened, I think I have the latest battery firmware, Thanks… I love your channel
George, you're going to be fine and it's an incredible machine that you're going to love flying. The only thing you'll need to remember is to never put your batteries away fully charged, especially into the hub. If you have them out of the hub (and drone) they will auto-discharge if needed. My routine is to fly them down to about 30% and put them away. The next time I want to fly I charge them and head out to the lake for some fun. Let me know if you have any other questions and consider subscribing to the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
Great tips and information , especially for a flyer like me. So will it be a practical practice like i store them in safety %, the night before I am going to fly i charge them in the hub (likely overnight), unplug them after wake up and go to fly?
so if i was to charge all 3 of my batteries and i only was to use one because it started to rain. am i ruining my batteries by leaving them or can i just charge them back and they are completely fine?
Lipo cells don't like stay fully charged or very lightly charged and both of those scenarios can shorten their life. I always fly my cells to below 50% and then store them until I'm ready to fly again. If you do come home with a few cells fully charged, slip them into the charging hub and use it to charge your phone or other device to draw down the power in the cells. That will prolong their life. Thanks for the post.
I’m not sure if DJI have issued a firmware update for the batteries yet, but I’m not going to rely on their say so. I tried storing the batteries in my 3-way charging hub with a thick rubber band around the top of the battery but the electrical contacts inside the hub were biting in to the rubber band so I ditched that idea. Instead, I cut up a plastic eraser into smaller pieces about 18mm thick (I’m sure a thinner piece would work fine too) and dropped them into the bottom of the battery slots in the charging hub, to prevent 100% insertion of the batteries into the hub, while still achieving good storage efficiency in the Fly More Combo carry bag. I don’t want to take any chances with the batteries that might shorten their life. Now to find somewhere in Australia to actually fly the damn drone without having to apply for a permit many days in advance… I don’t encourage law-breaking but the restrictions here seem to encourage flyers to just send the drone up when there’s no one around, fly around without bothering other people, then pack up and get out of there before a park ranger shows up. Rather than applying for a permit, wait for a week or more for a response, and maybe get rejected any way. I’m all for complying with the rules from the air space regulator (CASA in Australia), but all the parks seem to require a permit which is a pain in the ar$e.
AWESOME! Thanks for the info. You should be a science teacher. I was just having this discussion with my son a few days ago. Now I know the science behind it. Keep the videos coming.
That is awesome! I love diving into the nerdy details of what makes things tick and can't help but talk about it on the channel. It's great you're sharing that with your son. I do the same with my kids and it's really important in this tech-driven world they'll be living in. Stay tuned for more geeky topics soon. Rick
I just bought a fly more kit and only 2 out of the three batteries work. Because they plugged one into the drone and it totally discharged. Just know if you’re going to buy a new in box mini 2 fly more kit this late since release. You’re only going to get 2 of 3 batteries.
Thanks for the post but all of the batteries shipped with the drones are in their "dormant" state. They have to be woken up with the first charging and you should charge them to 100% before flying. They can sit in this dormant state for years on a shelf in a warehouse and won't lose any of their charge potential. Once you wake them up with the first charge, you'll need to always keep them above 15% when you're not flying or they may actually drop to zero and can't be revived. If you've tried to charge a new battery and it's not taking a charge, contact DJI and they will replace it for you. I hope that helps, Rick
Love your teaching.... very well explained! Good point on how they will fix that but didn’t thought about flipping those batteries; thanks so much keep them comming! Fly safe
John, I'm one of those nerds that actually reads every piece of documentation that comes with the drone and even the firmware update details. Let me know what I missed and I can address it here. What I put together in this clip is accurate and based on my testing of the quad. Thanks, Rick
Sounds like they have been dormant for a long time and may have entered hibernation mode. The best suggestion I can give you would be to put them in the drone and frain them completely and then try and charge them. That may "reset" them for you. If not, you'll need to replace them.
Hey Rick, a side question here. How well do the Yagi Range Extenders really work? I was thinking about getting one for my MM2, are they really worth it?
Rick the strangest thing happen to me with my FPV. It has been flying beautiful so I decided to try it with the joystick controller. I went into connect it etc and the DJI fly app took me to the fly tutorial and it won’t let me out. I’ve deleted the app, reinstalled it. Turned peer off n on. Any ideas? Also I put a 129 card in goggles and drone. Is there a size limit that you know of. Thanks Ron.
Gary, thanks for the post and you're going to love that quad! I've said from the beginning that the amount of tech DJI was able to cram into that tiny air frame is unbelievable.
Rick
Hey Rick what kind of battery's are in the DJI Air 2S ??
Lithium Polymer. They have a switch on the battery as he noted. They will auto discharge. Hope this helps.
Thank you.
Great video! I do have a question. If the mini 2 battery is between 40% and 65% can we leave it in the drone/cahrger?
this was great info because i was concern i just got my mini 2 combo last week have not used it yet. thank you so much you were great , can't wait to fly !!
For an owner of the mini 2 for less than a week, this is good for me. Thank you
One of the connections in my mini 2 battery is misaligned and now I can’t charge or discharge. Is there a way to fix this?
How do you set your batteries to storage charge? 3.8v per cell.
What kind of batteries are in the controller mini 2 already have had to replace one battery for the Drone
Very informative! Thank you! Like the other fella said be nice if you spoke a bit slower for those of us who aren’t as speedy ! Otherwise many thanks!
They are extremely tight putting in backwards. I'm not trying to damage the Batts. How did yours slide in so easy??
I had them in and out a few times and they made the slots a little larger. You won't have to do this anymore since DJI fixed the issue. You can simply update the firmware and they will discharge normally. Thanks for the post and I hope that helps. Rick
@@Dronevalley, you might want to pin this comment. I just bought my Mini 2, and it's good to know that the firmware update fixed the battery issue. For a first time user the battery issue sounded confusing, though you made a clear attempt to explain it. Thanks.
Hi Rick. My question is if I fully charge my batteries and have a plan to fly in 2 or 3 days, should I keep them in hub or out of hub?
Thanks for the post and honestly the best plan would be to charge them the night before so they are fresh the next day for flying. If you have to charge them a few days early because you're traveling, you should store them in the hub so the "brains" in there can monitor the batteries and discharge them after 3 days in case you don't get a chance to fly. I hope that helps and consider subscribing to the channel as I'll have a ton of content posting this week. Rick
Thanks Rick, I plan to remove my batteries from the charger NOW. I had no idea they needed to be loose to activate the auto-discharge😂
Thanks for the post and if you've updated to the latest firmware on the batteries they should now auto-discharge in the hub. Try updating and testing the feature and you may be alright. Rick
So how do you fix them? A lot of yapping for 14 mins and didn’t show us how to fix them
Dogs tap, I was speaking slowly to explain the initial issues with the batteries and their interaction with the hub and not discharging.
Haha
Rick I don't see the lipo bag any where!! I want to order one?
If I plan to fly the next day or two, can I charge them up to 100% and how low will they go everyday if left to auto discharge
Has this been fixed now ??
So has Dji fixed the issue 2 years later?
Maybe it’d be helpful to edit the title of the video adding the issue has been fixed by DJI.
From the recent comments and the ever more exposure to the drone market, people may find this video confused, but the video still serves as part of the history
That's good. What have they done differently
Rick
@@Dronevalley ok thanks, I always have it set to 200 + feet. Thanks for the reply.
Great information as always thank you,can I ask so is it perfectly safe to leave the battery in my air2s drone
Rick
@@Dronevalley sound advice thank you again
Did DJI release a fix already? I recently bought the mini 2 and am flying it almost evey day so I cant leave the batteries for 3-5 days to see if they will auto discharge :D
what does 3 times blinking in the battery indicator on the drone mean. It is not accepting the charge. Please help. I have a mini se
You have to tell me which of the LED's are blinking 3 times. Looking at the battery with the button on the right, the LED on the left is number 1. When I know which one is blinking, I can tell you the issue. Rick
@@Dronevalley hi all the leds are blinking 3 times
I just got it a few hour back
Flew it once and then kept it back
Once again turned it on after removing battery from the drone and saw battery cell error message and critical low battery
Hi, what did I do wrong? I charged all three batteries in the charging hub all morning, went to a birthday party in the afternoon that I was going to film… And my charging hub discharged all three of my batteries right down to critical position, The first time this happened it discharged one battery, this time it discharged all 3, Not sure why this happened, I think I have the latest battery firmware, Thanks… I love your channel
if there's any confusion after watching this video, watch it again at 75% speed.
If a battery goes to 0% and will not charge is it destroyed or is there a way to recharge
Hey Rick what if I got a brand new mini 2 that I haven't even opened the box yet? Am I going to be in good shape or do I need to do something???
George, you're going to be fine and it's an incredible machine that you're going to love flying. The only thing you'll need to remember is to never put your batteries away fully charged, especially into the hub. If you have them out of the hub (and drone) they will auto-discharge if needed. My routine is to fly them down to about 30% and put them away. The next time I want to fly I charge them and head out to the lake for some fun. Let me know if you have any other questions and consider subscribing to the channel so you don't miss anything. Rick
Great videos. Really helps me to understand. Is the battery in the controller the same way? Can I leave it fully charged or half way during storage?
Thanks for the great info. Does the most current firmware fix this issue or are we still waiting for an update?
Great tips and information , especially for a flyer like me. So will it be a practical practice like i store them in safety %, the night before I am going to fly i charge them in the hub (likely overnight), unplug them after wake up and go to fly?
I admire you so much Rick ,you are BRILLIANT .
so if i was to charge all 3 of my batteries and i only was to use one because it started to rain. am i ruining my batteries by leaving them or can i just charge them back and they are completely fine?
Lipo cells don't like stay fully charged or very lightly charged and both of those scenarios can shorten their life. I always fly my cells to below 50% and then store them until I'm ready to fly again. If you do come home with a few cells fully charged, slip them into the charging hub and use it to charge your phone or other device to draw down the power in the cells. That will prolong their life. Thanks for the post.
Great video, mate. Are the Li-Po batteries for the Mini 2 able to get firmware updates like the drone and the controller?
So its definitely not a good idea to fully charge the batterys day before a flight mission?
There are people modifying their batteries to get much more improved flight time for mini 2. Any videos on that?
So when you leave batteries for long time u need to charge about 60% and put into box?
Now to find somewhere in Australia to actually fly the damn drone without having to apply for a permit many days in advance…
I don’t encourage law-breaking but the restrictions here seem to encourage flyers to just send the drone up when there’s no one around, fly around without bothering other people, then pack up and get out of there before a park ranger shows up. Rather than applying for a permit, wait for a week or more for a response, and maybe get rejected any way. I’m all for complying with the rules from the air space regulator (CASA in Australia), but all the parks seem to require a permit which is a pain in the ar$e.
Great explanation!!
Great video I have seen more on this issue. I took mine out of the charger and drone.
Many thanks. Excellent advice to a newcomer like me. I've just subscribed. Cheers.
Fly safe
great tips for storing the battery's ,l like the backwards one in the charger
Suggest you read the dji manual for the mini2 re batteries.
John, I'm one of those nerds that actually reads every piece of documentation that comes with the drone and even the firmware update details. Let me know what I missed and I can address it here. What I put together in this clip is accurate and based on my testing of the quad. Thanks, Rick
my batt flahes 3 times in charger and dont charge any ideas seems like hibernation mode
Sounds like they have been dormant for a long time and may have entered hibernation mode. The best suggestion I can give you would be to put them in the drone and frain them completely and then try and charge them. That may "reset" them for you. If not, you'll need to replace them.
@@Dronevalley cheers
Hey Rick, a side question here. How well do the Yagi Range Extenders really work? I was thinking about getting one for my MM2, are they really worth it?
He has a video on those!
Yes absolutely get one!!! They work!!!
Thanks for sharing. DJI has advised me to remove batteries from the Drone or Charging Hub when not in use
Thanks Ron.
Thanks for the info Rick, waiting on the mini 2 combo to arrive.
Gary, thanks for the post and you're going to love that quad! I've said from the beginning that the amount of tech DJI was able to cram into that tiny air frame is unbelievable. It really does fly just like the larger quads and can almost fit into your pocket. Have fun and be sure to subscribe to the channel as I have a lot more content posting this week. RIck
