My grandfather was a whiskey runner. He lived in Detour as a commercial fisherman during the day. On weekends he would make a whiskey run for Joseph Kennedy. Great stories of his running from the Revenuer’s. Thanks for triggering good memories.
I enjoy watching and rewatching this video. You are a great story teller. The silent film was great! Boating past the Cedarville area was pretty awesome too.
I think most people who had family in Michigan during prohibition have stories of running.... I always love to hear them. My old family lore... They built "sleds" they would tow behind the boats, these sleds would be submerged when loaded. Should they run across the law they could simply cut the rope and the sled would sink... Can't get arrested without any evidence I suppose the theory was. There was also rumors of double chambered fuel tanks and bilges... I also heard that it was better to out run the gangs than it was the law.... how much was bravado or truth is lost to time. but the stories were great fantasy fuel for my young mind.
When I was in my teens through my 20s my parents had a really nice place on Drummond Island. I used to go to Sooneys tavern at the 4 corners and have a few. Many times there was this crazy old dude in there that would ask for Winstons and beers. Kind of a pest but he was funny and tolerable. They called him Anggie. Turns out his name was Angus Wagoosh and was a native AMerican and happened to be the chief of Cockburn Island! Man I miss summers on Drummond! I lit right up when I heard you guys mention Cockburn Island. I just found your videos. I am enjoying them. "Click" (subscribe).
My great grandfather was friends with Bugs Moran. Bug was apparently against booze and prostitutes...my great grandfather was a horrible alcoholic, got thrown in Dunning and later Kankakee for harassing women, and died in Kankakee Asylum after 30 years with dementia caused by Syphilis. So much for the puritan/Catholic facade. My great grandfather made runs for Bugs, they had a huge mansion in Piskatee/Fox Lake in Illinois called the Rose Villa. The gangsters used to all party there and the homes all have tunnels and secret passages etc. so cool.
1) I thought it was pronounced "Co-burn" Island. 2) You crossed to Canada (Cockburn Island) and re-entered the U.S. Did you clear customs and immigration or just make your own undetected run across the lake?
LOL! Only because I walked by on Thursday night and asked about it being open. They were taking a break and one of the guys mentioned it. I didn't think anyone would catch that!!! Hahahaha!
How the heck did they make that crossing in the dark without any GPS ? Must've been really good with the stars!

Everyone from Cheboygan knows the story about the rum running and the Boathouse Restaurant. Really cool place to eat.
Is it open again, do you know? It was closed after Covid.

Agreed. And those stories are overshadowed by "gang smuggling". Personally, I found the family stories to be much more interesting.
I spent my childhood summers in Hammond Bay, cheboygan was our go to city for food, or Roger city, both twenty miles away.

We didn't cross to Canada, that was just for the story.
@@RestlessViking And your sticking to that story ! ;) ;)
Methinks Keaton and Chaplin would be please with your cinematic endeavour.
😂😂🎩
What’s hilarious about the illicit poker game comment is they do play poker there every Thursday lol

My boss’ family own it lol. They play cards every Thursday
I live right behind this gas storage tanks
Is that fuel for freighters, fuel oil, heating oil? Do you know? I was wondering about their use.
Restless Viking it’s gasoline. The tankers pump it into the tanks and semis load up and haul it to gas stations. It’s very loud and busy
