I always felt that using a softer steel to learn the process involved in making a knife or whatever else you are trying to make was helpful. Then once you are comfortable with the process you can progress on to the better material and hopefully have success with your finished item.

oh cleaver style with lawnmower blade in the title i was thinking more the cane field machete style or billhook style choppers! you know Brandon mower blades used to be hardenable i got a hold of a couple from either the 40's or 50's and made can a pair of field style machetes and a woodsman pal tool out of them and they hardened and tempered real nice!
