    I came across this while replacing the cv axle. Hilarious that it is just the washer. I wish I had seen this video before purchasing the axle. Oh well, we live and learn. The washer is also special order. None of our auto parts stores carry it (not even by order).
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    Great instructions and video. Took me about an hour to do and really a straight forward process.
    While I was putting it all together I accidentally put too much torque on the bolt that secures the brake sensor. Ended up having to put a light layer of super glue down to hold it in place. Will have to use an extractor and replace the bolt another day!

    Thank you for this. This method with just the strut bolts looks much easier than knocking out the control arm and other parts.
    Do you know if this works on the passenger side with the different geometry?

    Thanks. I followed the instructions, replaced washer and nut and the popping sound is gone. The only thing is that I received two different nuts from the online store, 32 and 36mm, and realized this only when I was installing the second one, so I now have 36 on the right wheel and 32 on the left. Hopefully, it does not really matter.

    Any theories what that washer is supposed to do? Seems like once the axle nut is installed, that washer doesn't do anything...but GM obviously put it there for a reason.

    • @HowToDoitright
      @HowToDoitright  Год назад +2

      I had the same thought but actually it adds tension to axle as it goes on axle before it enters the wheel rotor and without it it’s moves and make the clicking sounds

    Great informative tutorial video. However, for me ... it is very sad to watch because I previously brought my 2012 Volt to a local tire shop (4.7 stars with many Google reviews) for driver-side CV axle replacement. Unlike this video carefully done everything step by step, the mechanic was working as "barbarian-style" with excesses force for speeding process. Not to mention, for them there's nothing such as "torque to factory specs".
    The driving characteristic has changed to somehow weird afterward; despite using the original GM OEM axle. The worst case scenario now is my car just couldn't pass smog check due to both ABS and TCS warnings and triggering the check engine light with a permanent fault code of C1222.
    A dealer wants more than $2K for replacing wheel speed sensor and hub assembly, and they recommend to do both sides at once. Anyway, what a lesson for how much a bad mechanic can mess up your car.

    • @HowToDoitright
      @HowToDoitright  2 года назад +2

      Oh sorry to hear that but I totally agree. Some mechanics are so bad. It’s hard to trust them. They don’t care cuz it’s not their car. Very sad

      HowtoDoit nice. hopefully the recall would still apply beyond the warranty ? interesting question ..
      the Volt is nice - best of both worlds. i wish there was a full size plug in hybrid SUV with decent enough battery for everyday /local driving , but with internal combustion engine for long road trips. i would replace my MB GL450 with such a vehicle. I would run on battery most all of the time, except for the trip from New York city down to the Florida house over a thousand miles away. We presently cn do that drive straight through, with only a single fuel stop. Still cannot recreate that with any of today's EV's unfortunately ..

      @HowToDoitright  2 года назад +1

      @@yeliab814 I’m not sure if it would cover after warranty. Do you have a volt and did you get yours fixed too?
      yeah I love this car. So quiet. I also have a Tesla but then on that car I’m only depending on electric. This volt I have both options so love it. Thinking about selling this one and buying the new generation.. I have maintained this one so well that don’t feel like selling it but I may. Let’s see.

    • @yeliab814
      @yeliab814 2 года назад

      @@HowToDoitright You'd have to buy a used one as they discontinued Volt in 2019 . Only sell Bolt now.
      I don't have electric vehicle. Waiting for an electric full size SUV. Battery plus engine would be great combo for a big SUV but it doesnt look like that will ever happen. So I'll just wait for Rivian, VW, Ford, Hyundai/KIA etc. to eventually make the EV i need. I look forward to that day.

      @@myoldhousefix Doing the caliper and hub removal is harder than just removing these two easily accessible bolts to release the knuckle from the shock tower. However, I wonder if one method is better than the other for preserving the cars alignment.

      @Jim Riley well we'll see...there's really not a lot of adjustment that I found. Due to salt corrosion, I ended up rebuilding almost the entire front end minus tie rods and rack. I marked all the locations, reassembled and car still seems to drive straight and wear correct. Tie rod is the only major adjustment.

    If you see bare, gold nuts / bolts / washers, any hardware, they are cadmium plated.

    I thought the TSB for the clicking sound said to NOT replace the washer.

    • @HowToDoitright
      @HowToDoitright  27 дней назад

      Not sure but don’t know why they would say that. Do you have the doc?. Now keep in mind in some case it could just be improper torque but I found my washer clip to be broken at one point and the nut must be replaced to get a better torque but sometimes it does work so try it without replacing it first. Also the washer clips inside have these three prongs which you can bent easily to make them snug better on the axle and then put the axle in the hub and then put the nut. This method also works if you don’t want to change the washer clip.

      TSB 19-NA-103 is for Gen 2 and specifically says to not replace the washer.
      I cannot find the Gen 1 TSB for the life of me and I need to fix this this week. Would like to verify it is the same for Gen 1 before I do. I’m sure I found it a long time ago that said to leave out the washer but can’t now for some reason.
      Interestingly, the Bolt EV also has this problem. The first TSB says to not replace the washer, it gets updated 4 months later to say replace the washer. Odd.

    • @slowbird
      @slowbird 22 дня назад

      @@bjbastenI’m in the same boat. I can see the TSB for the Gen 2 but can’t find it for the Gen1, however I remember reading on the forums that the fix was to remove the washer and not replace it.
      Clear as mud unfortunately.
      If you replace it it’s guaranteed to start clicking again eventually, if you leave it out…🤷🏻‍♂️

      I've been driving with the clicking for probably 5+ years now. My 14 has over 120k miles and no major problems yet. Biggest headache was replacing the 12v because they decided to bury the damn thing. That was a piece of cake compared to this. Not confident enough to try and put all that back together! I don't even notice the click anymore. XD.
