In the cinematic trailer, as the camera pans up from the rotting base, it shows the safe shallows ending and a biome that looks exactly like the dunes being there. I always liked the mystery surronding the Crash Zone. I wanted to explore the back side of the Aurora but I just can't handle it, not even on freecam mode or with cheats... it so damn scary being back there, pitch back, with 3-4 reapers around there. @@siljorfag That shadow Leviathan looks like a parasite to me.. a super massive parasite.. but.. maybe it latches onto and feeds off something even bigger? ⊙﹏⊙ I'd love it if it lurked at the sea floor and fed on tiny creatures in the sand and was totally passive. Can you imagine if it was harmless but latched onto sea trucks/cyclops so you can see it through the window and it dragged you around a bit before letting you go but didn't do much damage? 😂 I just like seeing creative AI and never quite knowing how creatures act. Also, a quick add-on to the reaper biome theory, it could also have been, along with the loud noise, the meat (people) that were on board when it crashed could have attracted the reapers.

Maybe it could have been a safe biome before but the crash could have done the following Radiation could have killed all life plants, fish, etc other than the leviathans Loud noise lured the leviathans Lots of dead body’s fell in the water causing the leviathans to come and eat and this could be the reason why they are still there looking for more food
Haven’t watched yet, so sorry if he said this. I imagine the look didn’t change much after the crash. Near the crater edge most biomes are wide open, sandy, and with little visibility. Edit: of course he mentioned it XD
I really like the theory of it being a reaper breeding site, because what if the reapers are staying there because they’re upset that they’re eggs were crushed or they think their babies are still alive? Like mourning the death of their children, That would be really sad :(
Here is my theory about the island: so this small RUclipsr pointed out in the cinematic trailer there is an island which would line up with the one that is by the aurora. Also, the captain says “I’m attempting a controlled decent” which maybe indicates they were aiming for the island but the force was too powerful so they crushed it
I think it could be possible that there was an entrance to the lava zone along with the possible dunes. This would explain how the sea dragons used to sometimes eat reaper leviathans, as there aren't any caves that they would likely be able to fit through, so the aurora could be covering that possible entrance.
I think It would have been really cool if the crash zone would have more of a place in the story line. If they made us travel through this creepy biome trying to avoid reaper leviathans, like maybe if their was an entrance to another biome that had another precursor facility, idk
another theory i saw was that there was a MASSIVE hole there, going from the dunes to the lava biome, thus how the sea dragons got out and dragged the reapers down into the lava biome to eat (because there are reaper skeletons there) but the aurora covered it up, and made the walls collapse in, blocking the way up with rocks and one massive ship
My first experience with a reaper was I was driving my cyclops and saw the triangle on my radar. I didn't know what it was so I said "Huh, wonder what that is". He grabbed me, and now I'm scared to go back.
I really enjoyed subnautica. It was such a entertaining, time taking, and super interesting game. I can’t wait for below zero to get completed. After that they need to make another one or at least a movie or something like that. The movie would be so good.
Reaper Leviathan: Ah yes, my home is a beautiful place. The young swimming gracefully, the adults keeping watch and patrolling... what could go wrong? *Famous last words.*
I have something for the theory that the Aurora landed on a landmass, if you would look at one of the other places where you can find a reaper leviathan it is at the gun island, so maybe reaper leviathans simply prefer being near dry land 🤷♂️
I think it would have been some kind of deeper version of the safe shallows. The reason I think that is because in below zero, there is a shallow twisty bridges biome and a deeper twisty bridges biome. And those larges coral tubes, are only present in the safe shallows. So it must be a deeper variant of it. . Or it could be related to the lilypads biome, since the grass in the crashzone mesas look kind of like the grass in the lilypads. Or I could be completely wrong. And it is something completely different. But only the devs know what it looked like before the Aurora crashed there, storywise Also, I really love your content. It is one of the main reasons I like subnautica so much, because of your lovely videos :D
This is personally one of my favorite videos by you, wish it was longer though, your theories always interest me. The hell hole theory is one of the most interesting ones, but if you look around the ILZ, you dont really see any holes that could possibly lead up to the surface. But yet again, it could have collapsed upon impact, who knows! The dunes/intersecting biomes theory is the most plausible, since the population of reapers would lead you to believe so. It simply just being an area where the bulb zone, crag field, mushroom forest, safe shallows, and grassy plateaus intersect is also very plausible. The island theory COULD be true, since as you mentioned, there is solid rock at the side of the Aurora. Yet again, as you said, it could be and is most likely time/budget constraints, or maybe just developer oversight. It's also interesting to see that the amount of destroyed terrain between the crash zone and other biomes is not that much. You would expect a 1,280 meter long ship to make more of an impact. One of the things I love the most about Subnautica is that it always has... foresight in mind? I'm not sure if that's the correct word, but a lot of the time answers a lot of your, "why?" questions. Anyways, sorry for writing an entire damn essay. Keep up the good work, 1 million subs is definitely in sight. By the way, congrats on replying to all 2,988 comments! 2,989 now, :)

Imagine the Aurora going “YEEET” and flying of 4546B and the G.U.N. being like “Wtf how the f did he do that” and player being like *Insert Mike Wasoski with 2 eyes*
Bro, yesterday i was playin and LITERALLY thought "if the crash zone was full of Reapers then maybe the crash zone was reaper territory" And also that the Aurora probably Yeeted like a dozen Reapers when it crashed 😂
Fun fact: if you look around the crash site, near the lifepod 4, you can find in one place, some seaweed on the ground that isn't anywhere else on the map.
@@TheLastBacon yeah, maybe not really near the lifepod 4 but at the place which is in the middle of the aurora. i went there today for supply crates, and i saw a bunch of seaweed just on the sand. i never saw this before, you should go there and look for it.
I started to feel bad for the reaper leviathans, then i remembered the terror these creatures have for me and my little mothi. TAKE A BIT OF REVENGE REAPERS
The guy driving the ship said he would try to land on solid ground and he kinda did so that would make the crash zone like a flattish mountain biome which is a lot like where all the reapers went after the crash
In one of the life pods you get an audio from the captain to the first officer, i believe, saying "I am attempting, a controlled decent!" So he was trying to fall with style.
I'd argue that all of those theories are kind of true, the Crash Zone is pretty big after all. The Aurora itself lies on top of a former part of the Safe Shallows (with rocks almost reaching the surface) while the southern area with the mesas as well as the strip to the edge of the void were basically Dunes 2: Reaper Boogaloo.
The Pilot knew what he was doing, in Second Officer Keen's voicelog on lifepod 19, the Captain states "Negative, you'll need the ship in one piece if you're going to contact HQ on the long-range. I'm attempting a controlled descent."
It was a crash fish breeding ground that consists of the alpha and lesser crash fish, The alphas were much larger impact much more of a punch and all lived in the crash zone, but due to the aggression, both both species of fish would become agitated when seeing each other which prompted them to explode making the terrain lifeless. When the Aurora crashed, it killed all of the alpha crash fish leaving just a few members of the crash fish who ventured out to the safe shallows.
I built my base behind the Aurora and the spot i built it in is on the plant covered pillars you could call them, that lay between the crag feilds and are barely in the crash zone, you are the first person to speak of them, they are truly a beautiful spot
Fun fact: In Below Zero you can go freecam to look at the planet and find the area we play in this game but the ship is nowhere to be found. But with the constant screen shaking when we're at the crash site, i think the ship simply slide off the Crater's edge since the ship was right next to it. Another fun fact: When you enter the Lost River via Bulb Zone entrance, you can find multiple Reaper skeletons (due to Sea Dragons hunting). This suggests the Reapers natural biome isn't very far from that entrance and would enforce the idea that the Reapers were NOT drawn to the ship. Also when you compare the amount of Reapers in the Dunes and the Crash Site, it would suggest the Crash Site is indeed another dune. There are 2 possibilities for the presence of Reapers in the Mountain biome: Either it's because the biome is quite similar to the Dune (just more grass) or because some of the Reapers fled North after the crashing... Actually it could be both. About the Sea Dragons hunting: it's quite obvious since the first noticeable feature of the Bulb Zone entrance is a pit leading directly to the Inactive Lava Zone, and with another Reaper skeleton down there it would suggest the Sea Dragons feed on Reapers, and would use that entrance to reach their habitat.
Also reapers like to hang out in very sandy nearly lifeless areas like the mountains, dunes, etc. So maybe they didn't just go there because of the sound, but also because it's open ,dead, and relatively hot or have hot areas. And it might be explained because maybe they use heat as a sort of camouflage against prey with heat vision, and with the open areas might be used as an easier way of finding prey with it's sonar and it's size would need a lot of space. An the reason all the biomes it lives in are mostly dead is because both the reapers eat a lot of fish, but also a large amount of fish might mess with it's sonar.
I think the island theory is probably the most logical, cause how else do you explain the evil crabs? From what I've seen, they can't swim, so it seems logical that there was some form of land there.
Maybe we should look at the rest of the fauna in the zone: Gasopods, Stalkers and Sandsharks - and a few Bonesharks at the border to the Crag Field. Gasopods are native to the Shallows and the Dunes, Stalkers are native to the Kelp Forests and Sandsharks are native to the Grassy Plateaus; all of these biomes border the north western part of the Crash site. So the north western part of the Crash Site biome might just have been parts of the bordering Kelp Forest, Shallows and Grassy Plateaus. However the Biome also has a large part behind the ridge (the south eastern portion) which is a lot deeper and is also not destroyed as badly as the actual crash site. This part of the biome has its own unique appearance.
Going off the theory that the Aurora crashed into a Dunes type biome would explain why you find SO MUCH quartz in the area. When something like sand gets super heated, it will typically turn into a glass or quartz like substance. So a Dunes type biome, albeit with extensive (relatively speaking) flora and fauna carryover from the surrounding biomes, would probably make the most sense.
I believe in Dunes theory / nesting grounds for reapers cause supposedly under aurora there was cave leading to active and inactive lava zone that sea dragons used to drag down reapers so thats how Alterra basically killed another of rare species
I find it hilarious how his introduction just before he gets started with the topic, he literally says; "Grab a peeper to feed it to a Reaper" Fair enough, survival of the fittest, but.. c'mon.. a PEEPER?- ya can't, no way, they're too adorable to sacrifice- :)
Most likely why the sea dragons are being endangered is because of their food source: the reapers. Since the aroura covered the hell hole. which for the dragons was most likely their primary way to drag down the reapers, the remaining dragons would probably starve or kill other fauna or when it came to it, kill others of their species. I could be wrong.
In officer Keen’s PDA log with the captain, the latter does confirm that he attempts a controlled descent, so it’s only natural that he would aim for the nearest landmass since he doesn’t know how deep the water is.
It was probably some form of landmass, considering some pieces of it remain above water and the extensive damage to the front of the aurora. One thing I would do is double check the PDA entries when you’re discussing theories, since they tend to add tons of weight to certain theories like this one. In particular, Second Officer Keen’s transmission from the captain gives us evidence that A: you can steer the Aurora in atmosphere and B: the captain was aiming for dry land to keep the ship intact so the survivors could contact command.

@@derekdrake8706 Yeah I get what you mean. I expect some background for the Crater, there are still things left unexplained, or at least some hints to know more about 4546B.
About leviathans on the Crater, yeah, they are probably the creatures with the biggest ammount of lore and information in the game, so perhaps they can left them untouched; i'm exited about the lifecycle and background they'll give to the new leviathans.
It'd be so terrifying finding one at the bottom, blending in with the dark.. wondering if it'll kill you.. only to find out it ignores you ..unless you get too close. Can you imagine if it was harmless but latched onto sea trucks/cyclops so you can see it through the window and it dragged you around a bit before letting you go but didn't do much damage? 😂 I just like seeing creative AI and never quite knowing how creatures act. If all the Leviathans have the same behavior, it gets kind of old.
I love how in the first game it explains how life was able to survive the Kharaa at all thanks to the peepers swimming in and out of the Primary Containment Facility, spreading Enzyme 42 across the crater.
... doesn't explain how ghost Leviathan's in the void survived, or creatures around the arctic.. maybe the Kharaa wasn't planet wide?
Some wreckage from the Aurora probably did fall into the void. Noticed that there's wreckage from it scattered throughout the crater.
Yeah it's definitely possible :)
Also, a quick add-on to the reaper biome theory, it could also have been, along with the loud noise, the meat (people) that were on board when it crashed could have attracted the reapers.

Maybe it could have been a safe biome before but the crash could have done the following
Radiation could have killed all life plants, fish, etc other than the leviathans
Loud noise lured the leviathans
Lots of dead body’s fell in the water causing the leviathans to come and eat and this could be the reason why they are still there looking for more food
That might certainly be what happened :)

The one person who disliked the video was someone who helped build the precursor gun.
Haha probably :) but I'm fine with people expressing their opinion!
Interesting you say since the precursors used the gun to protect the planet.
I mean the precursor gun helped not spread death and doom though the galaxy, but go off
So 200 people did it?
Either that or they disliked the continuous loud audio pulse in the background of the video.
I really like the theory of it being a reaper breeding site, because what if the reapers are staying there because they’re upset that they’re eggs were crushed or they think their babies are still alive? Like mourning the death of their children, That would be really sad :(
Yeah it is certainly a possibility :)
Reapers are way too dumb for that to be a possibility. It's data entry literally says it is 90% muscle and sinew with 10% brainpower.
Here is my theory about the island: so this small RUclipsr pointed out in the cinematic trailer there is an island which would line up with the one that is by the aurora. Also, the captain says “I’m attempting a controlled decent” which maybe indicates they were aiming for the island but the force was too powerful so they crushed it
I suppose it is possible yeah :)
Was thinking about this during my playthrough. Thanks dude.

I think it could be possible that there was an entrance to the lava zone along with the possible dunes. This would explain how the sea dragons used to sometimes eat reaper leviathans, as there aren't any caves that they would likely be able to fit through, so the aurora could be covering that possible entrance.
Yep that's definitely possible :) quite likely actually imo.
I like the Dunes theory!!! It would also make sense with the Sea Dragons as they used to come up from below the Aurora to feed on Reapers :)
Yep very true! :)
"the crash zone is the biggest biome"
the void biome: am i a joke to you?
Fair enough :) the void is technically larger.
I think It would have been really cool if the crash zone would have more of a place in the story line. If they made us travel through this creepy biome trying to avoid reaper leviathans, like maybe if their was an entrance to another biome that had another precursor facility, idk
Would definitely give us more of an incentive to spend time there :) cuz right now, I always go in and out as fast as I can...
another theory i saw was that there was a MASSIVE hole there, going from the dunes to the lava biome, thus how the sea dragons got out and dragged the reapers down into the lava biome to eat (because there are reaper skeletons there) but the aurora covered it up, and made the walls collapse in, blocking the way up with rocks and one massive ship
Yep, I really like that theory :)

I have something for the theory that the Aurora landed on a landmass, if you would look at one of the other places where you can find a reaper leviathan it is at the gun island, so maybe reaper leviathans simply prefer being near dry land 🤷♂️
Found this on my homepage on 06/04/24, it's great to see Subnautica content in the algorithm ten years after the game was released.
Eyyy that is awesome indeed :)
Heh heh I know the rock-puncher's biome.
Uhh.... Too late?...
Now that's an interesting theory :) would explain why we never see them in the 1st game!
Aurora:Crashes
Reaper leviathan: Is that my dad?
It's free real estate :)
But only the devs know what it looked like before the Aurora crashed there, storywise
Also, I really love your content. It is one of the main reasons I like subnautica so much, because of your lovely videos :D

Anyway, my theory is: ERROR 404: Never thought about that ;-;
Now that is a theory we didn't consider :)

He definitely did a good job! :) Probably saved Ryley's life with that!
@@TheLastBacon That was his plan... maybe not trying to save Ryley specifically but... eh it works out for the janitor.
True :) it's very likely that the area probably consisted of multiple biomes overlapping.
The Pilot knew what he was doing, in Second Officer Keen's voicelog on lifepod 19, the Captain states "Negative, you'll need the ship in one piece if you're going to contact HQ on the long-range. I'm attempting a controlled descent."
Yep, he certainly managed to land in a good area at least :)
Me personally I think the crash zone used to be a biome called the mesas, like the ones behind the aurora but many more, with no reaper leviathans.
Could definitely be the case :)
I always figure it was a safe shallow's because of the cinematic trailer, but also because of acid mushrooms, sparse grass, and coral tubes
Could definitely be the case! :)
As if regular crashfish weren't bad enough :)
You may not remember but you have responded to 3 of my other comments, thanks for having conversations with your subscribers. Luv ur vids btw ;)
I built my base behind the Aurora and the spot i built it in is on the plant covered pillars you could call them, that lay between the crag feilds and are barely in the crash zone, you are the first person to speak of them, they are truly a beautiful spot
Pretty epic spot! :)
Bro I got jumped by two reapers while behind the Aurora
Oh that is a very good point about the Bulb Zone area :) definitely could be where reapers come from!
Yeah maybe you're right - it does sound like the kind of territory they'd inhabit :)
I think the island theory is probably the most logical, cause how else do you explain the evil crabs? From what I've seen, they can't swim, so it seems logical that there was some form of land there.
Yeah that definitely plays into the theory :)
Yeah true! The creatures to hint towards similar areas around the shallows :)
Oh that’s an excellent point :)
I believe in Dunes theory / nesting grounds for reapers cause supposedly under aurora there was cave leading to active and inactive lava zone that sea dragons used to drag down reapers so thats how Alterra basically killed another of rare species
Yeah I do really like the lava zone hole idea :)
@@TheLastBacon also I absolutely love how you respond to every comment on your videos no matter age of that video

Haha fair enough :) They are very cute!
Yeah it’s definitely possible :)

In officer Keen’s PDA log with the captain, the latter does confirm that he attempts a controlled descent, so it’s only natural that he would aim for the nearest landmass since he doesn’t know how deep the water is.
True! :)
Yeah about the landmass it really depends on whether you consider the trailer canon since it shows the crash :)
@@TheLastBacon yeah that’s also true, since most of it seems vaguely canon.
