Hot chocolate are one of the most underrated groups of all time. Theyre a UK group that covered every genre in their music. Few have ever fused so many sounds. Errol brown(RIP) was one of the greatest singers. Theyre most famous for the YOU SEXY THING(I believe in miracles) song which is a classic
“Brother Louie” version by The Stories is the better version IMO .. all versions have their own styles .. The Stories version is the more popular one that was played on the radio..
I love both versions. I like the Stories version with lead singer Ian Loyds voice kinda sounds like Rod Stewart. I prefer Hot Chocolates version way more musical and way more funk to it everyone has there own preferences. Over just a really cool song that makes you groove.
.Yes , The song “Brother Louie” was written by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson of the Group Hot Chocolate and is the Original .. Like I said above the Version/Cover of the song by The Stories is the better Cover/ Version IMHO … The Hot Chocolate song in the UK reached No 7 on the charts … The Stories (Ian Lloyd Vocals) Cover release in the US reached No 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was more of a commercial success …
Lead singer Lester Errol Brown (12 November 1943 - 6 May 2015) was a British-Jamaican singer and songwriter, best known as the frontman of the soul and funk band Hot Chocolate. In 2004, Brown received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music.
Yoo my song! As a young 5 year old boy in the early 70s I remember falling in love with this song simply for my name, but as the years went by and I heard all the words I realized it fit me perfectly😁
Louie original was done by what you just heard Hot Chocolate. Remake by the stories they took out the controversial lyrics when they said Honky and Spook and it was a number one hit.
Growing up white and in Canada I'd always believed *The Stories* were the first to record this song. This version is so different - *loved it!* Live and Learn, thanks Guys. Would also love me some *"You Sexy Thing"*
Hot Chocolate was a British group with a mix of black and white members. Error Brown was the lead singer. He passed away a couple of years ago. I saw the live in the the mid 70s. Ive not heard the Stories version, but this was the original written and sung by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson
I grew up with my parents playing this version so I prefer it. Every sunday afternoon when the cleaning was done, Hot Chocolate Greatest hits was on repeat.
I came home from the Vietnam War in 1970 .. as a white dude my girlfriend was black .. her mother and grandmother told me to stay away but we still saw each other .. this stuff was real back then
"Brother Louie" is a song about an interracial love affair between a white man and a black woman, and the subsequent rejection of both by their parents because of it. The title was written and sung by Errol Brown and Tony Wilson of the group Hot Chocolate in 1973. "Brother Louie" was covered by the American band Stories (featuring singer Ian Lloyd) about six months after Hot Chocolate's UK hit.
Oh my goodness. This brings back memories. As a toddler, I was blessed to be able to live next door to my grandmother's home. Unfortunately, my older brother use to love to stay there...alone. So, what did my brother do? He would tease me until I cried and went back home. How? I can still hear him repeat the line of this song: "Louie, Louie, Louie," etc, etc. It's funny now, but in the early 70s, I cried! 😁
OKAY YOU GUYS GOT TO LOOK UP THE ORIGINAL BY THE STORIES 1973. AND BJ DON'T TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY MAN I'M NOT TRYING TO INSULT YOU, BUT YOU SURE ARE A LUCKY MAN BECAUSE THAT ASIA IS A STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. I MEAN THAT WITH ALL DUE RESPECT. GOOD FOR YOU BJ GOOD FOR YOU MY FRIEND .
Just heard The Stories version , I have to say I prefer Hot Chocolate version maybe its because Im a as a British guy and this has always been played in UK
This is the first time I’ve listened to this version in decades. I’ve always listened to Stories version. Wow. Hot Chocolate’s version is harsh and far more impactful. I think this is now my favorite version.
Hi Asia & BJ, I always liked Hot Chocolate & looked forward to the release of their next song. Here in the U.K., they were always popular on the Tv chart show (Top Of The Pops). If you have not already, please react to their 1974 Hit song (Emma).
If you want to dive into THIS rabbit hole, you GOTTA check out "You Sexy Thing", "It Started With A Kiss", "I'll Put You Together Again" and "A Child's Prayer" (lesser known but great tune)
That's how I felt, I feel the commercial success of Stories version obscured the success of the original and the better arrangement. I didn't like this song until I discovered the original and now it's an favorite.
The intro reminds me of the funky intro to "Shaft" - it was like a signal that some serious stuff was coming up. It was the time... I remember the very first time I heard this song. It was very provocative for the time.
When I was 16 I had a very similar situation. My Dad beat me for bringing a black girl home. It did not stop me from dating black women I just knew to never let him meet them. My favorite song is still Island Girl by Elton John. The love of my life is Haitian.
People on here saying the Stories was the original version 😂 no it isn't the Hot Chocolate version is the original and is better and more direct telling sides of both the families, the Stories version was watered down.
Saw Hot Chocolate live in 2007 but without lead singer Errol Brown. Wished I had see him live back in the 70s or 80s. If there would be a time machine I would travel back to this time
I always like The Stories version better/ Mainly because until recently that was the only version I had heard. I do however really like Hot Chocolate's song "You Sexy Thing". Funny you guys needing to try and break it down-the lyrics are obvious.
Ooh in the 70s if a black boy talked to a white girl in my neighborhood the black girls would target her for endless beatings . We all understood that if we fell for anyone outside of our circle you were on your own. Of course couple by couple one baby after the next it got easier, but it was crazy hard. It’s not great now but you can’t really understand how much it’s changed ☮️
It was more than an unwritten rule. Until I was 8 years old (1967) marrying outside one;s race was punishable by one year in prison (for both people) in Virginia. The Lovings (quite an ironic last name given the charges) were convicted and sentence in 1958. At the time the US Supreme Court took up this case, it was still illegal to join in a mixed race marriage in 16 states. In a rare unanimous vote of 9-0 the court over-ruled these laws for the entire country. Through the centuries, of course, blacks and whites produced many children - often enslaved black with white owners or masters - I cringe to even type those words. Some states held that “even one drop of black blood” in a person’s heritage made them “colored” in the eyes of the law. I’m 63 and white. My adult kids absolutely cannot believe many things that happened and changed during my lifetime. Clearly, there is more to do.
Please please please can you react to a song called "Come on up to the house". It is sung by an artist named Tom Waits. It's such a beautiful song and I would love to hear what you think!
To redress the balance in the comments, IMHO, The Stories cover of this is appalling. I takes a sophisticated arrangement strips it down and completely loses any soul. The drumming is too high in the mix. The lead singing by Ian Lloyd is particularly bad. His forcing of the lyrics grates especially against the smooth delivery of Errol Brown. Sometimes covers work, this time it doesn't. Asia, BJ: You should hear more by Hot Chocolate. Start with "Love Is Life" (1970)
I grew up with this kind of BS in the 60's. No black girls. Then we found out we had a black ancestor in thelTe 1900s. I just laughed. This blonde hair blue eyed thought it was pretty damn cool.
@@60sbaby456 nothing wrong with liking the cover version more ,there are cover versions i like more than the original ,im just pointing out that hot chocolate version is the original version of this song 👍
Now you know this isn't the original version original version was done by an all-white group called the stories and it was from the male's point of view and his family same reactio by his family of course
If you'd read the comments you would know that this is the original version, written by two of the band members including the lovely Errol Brown, the main singer.
Nearly every social paradigm that changes needs trailblazers spearheading them. People who can withstand the slings and arrows and brave enough to send the message knowing full well the backlash that awaits them. Normally we compare versions, but in this case we have a black band and a white band putting it out there and I can't think of a thing more appropriate. Hot Chocolate wasn't pulling their punches in a very tumultuous era.

@xtrmfc Stories version is more vanilla, less funky, and less impactful.

Stories did the song first it's their song, every body else covered it the original is better.
I've never heard this version. I love the song & the message. You should definitely listen to the version by STORIES.
Great band and a great song. And the band itself were interracial, so knew what they were writing about, especially back in those days.
Oh my goodness. This brings back memories. As a toddler, I was blessed to be able to live next door to my grandmother's home. Unfortunately, my older brother use to love to stay there...alone. No covers versions can beat Hot Chocolates original ‘Brother Louis’. They were a great British band.
So agree with others here. No comparison. Best version of this the Stories. The vocals on their hit with the song are killer.
The " no groove, can't dance" version
Louie and his father are still fighting it out since 1973 ...
Good band ,, they did a song called EMMA .BY H.C. POWERFUL Song..☮️🎶

Alright now!

Everyone's a winner by these guys is pretty funky. Emma Lee was a hit for them as well

Never even knew this version existed! Although I'll have to admit that I like it. Especially the orchestral arrangements.
That's how I felt, I feel the commercial success of Stories version obscured the success of the original and the better arrangement. I didn't like this song until I discovered the original and now it's an favorite.
This is a cover. Original made I believe in the ‘70s was one of my favs

this is much better by the original writers -hot chocolate

You have to react to "The Stories" cover version. It's a White band that switches it up a bit. Great song though, appropriate for the times.
Forgot about this one! Couple of suggestions for next Hot Chocolate tune. “Every Ones A Winner” or “You Sexy Thing”. 😁👍
When I was 16 I had a very similar situation. My Dad beat me for bringing a black girl home. It did not stop me from dating black women I just knew to never let him meet them. My favorite song is still Island Girl by Elton John. The love of my life is Haitian.

Check out the original by the band Stories. ‘73.
This is the original the version by Stories is a cover
@ you are correct, the original was by Hot Chocolate, a fine band in their day own & way. “Emma” was particularly fine.
I remember this song from Jr. High in the middle '70s. The parents attitude didn't make sense to me then and still doesn't now.
I remember this song more by Stories. It didn't have the spoken words in verse as this cover does.
This isn't a cover this is the original 👍
Stories version is great too
Thanks you 2...i dont think i ever heard this version ...love Hot Coco! Lol ve to have some woth you 2!!
Ahhh so glad you got to the chocolate, fantastic 😍😍😊
There are at least two white guys in this band as well.
I always like The Stories version better/ Mainly because until recently that was the only version I had heard. I do however really like Hot Chocolate's song "You Sexy Thing". Funny you guys needing to try and break it down-the lyrics are obvious.
Brings me back to a great time
heavens in the backseat of my cadillac by Hot Chocolate deserves a listen to
Actual hot chocolate with a bit of brown sugar sounds good right now lol. They're an interesting band. A vibe when the moment is right.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do "Hot Chocolate", the song, "Everyone's a winner." The original video.
IT IS FIRE!
You 2 will love it!
It wasn’t just race . Spanish to Spanish- Irish to Like-Italian to- Jewish to-Greek to- basically it was all kinds of tribalism
I remember this song. There are several songs like this. Does your mama know about me, Society’s Child are the songs that come to mind.
You should check out "Come and get Your Love" by Redbone. The song was featured in the opening of the movie "Guardians of the Galaxy ".
Wait a second, WAIT a second!!! Do Stories' version, please. It just IS better.
I love thier You Sexy Thing its fire!...Also please do Brother Louie by Stories its way better trust me. 🙂

In the 70s as you say racism was very bad and although thankfully it is a lot better now unfortunately it is on the rise again (certainly in the U.K.)
The stories are better
