      Yes, Cosmic originally was a set of GNOME extensions, and Cosmic Epoch is essentially a Rust-rewrite of GNOME.

    i love the fact that they used the title bar to add the context menus on there loke a pseudo-global menu. its amazing cause it saves a lot of space, i hate gnome HUGE padding and waste of screen space, this cosmic desktop looks so good. i cant wait to the alpha release. Im using pop os rn

    Bizarrely I've been using cosmic on Fedora with no problems whilst not jumping the gun on my Pop OS desktop.

      same, but it had really high cpu usage and I couldn't take my fans spinning up for no reason anymore.

    Cosmic is the future...im playing emulators with no issue whatsoever ..even on my gtx 1650 this thing is king fps is noticeable..kde and gnome didnt offer me as much stability and fps ...but cosmic has been great....i hope that they dont mess it up so far so good.

    Oh god, a lot of border radius are different. (Menu, window, buttons, menu buttons, desktop number, terminal tabs, folder left menu, settings left menu, settings top buttons)
    I hope they will make it more consistent.
    Also, the desktop number background color touch the up and down of the topbar.
    Same for the file menu touching the file button.

    Now they just need to figure out how to theme actual GTK apps and flatpaks. Yeah Iced is cool, but that doesn't mean GTK and QT are going away.

      Enable the external theme support in the appearance settings page. It is in the experimental settings context drawer.

    It's like gnome but not completely neutered to the point you need a separate software to properly set your wallpaper. I hope they come out with an official fedora package for this soon!

    O nice they combinded title bars with menu bars of their apps - I like this idea!
    Now only me to allow to move dock on top-center, clock to the left and this will be DE for me!

    I hope they add the ability to turn windows invisible or transparent when you hover over other windows from the same program in the dock, like how windows does it. It makes it alot easier to find windows if you have multiple monitors.
    Also a clipboard list.

    I am a fan of KDE Plasma for 7 years now. I really like Plasma 6 and Wayland compositor works great now.
    But i am really interested in Cosmic DE, i will give it a try for sure. It may be a real good DE

    Im happy to see a cooler dark UI background, the brownish gray i got from popos gnome was so ugly and so difficult for me to override. This may may have been my skill issue but the theming experience really rubbed me the wrong way that I switched to kde

    I love the auto theme system switcher and the horizontal workspace layout. Having work spaces on the side feels weird for me

    Currently using Hyprland but having a hard time with some games, hoping the floating/tiling hybrid and gaming focus from System76 with this Cosmic desktop will help solve a lot of those issues while letting me keep tiling support. Super excited for the alpha release, will be hopping on as soon as I hear it's "good enough" for daily use.

      I wish I could. But I use CUDA for work, so I need an Nvidia GPU and it didn't seem to work nicely with the proprietary drivers according to the documentation (I red it a while ago, so I don't know if it is still the same).

      @@vidal9747 I heard 555 plays better with Wayland compositor but ymmv. On the AMD side it's mostly good. Definitely look into the new drivers though.

      @@vidal9747 Newest proprietary drivers should work lots better. The 555 betas made Wayland viable, the 555 stable/public drivers should only improve that.

    Cosmic is looking pretty sweet!
    Last time i tried it I added app icons to the top panel and when i made it larger so app icons were large enough the left and right side for system tray and workspace icons were way too huge for me....i am just wondering if that has been fixed by any chance now? Thanks

    I've been trying it out on the side and I can definitely see the potential. However, I wouldn't dream of dailying it yet since the launcher is super rough and the tiling support is extremely bare bones.

      Having the app icons touch the edges is so weird. I know this is an alpha, but the UI looks super inconsistent.

    I love Pop. I just wish they would have updated the base when Ubuntu did. With it taking this long, it would be nice to have an up to date operating system.

      This. I also want them to update to 24.04 because I wanted to use stable kde plasma 6. I hope that it won't be delayed so long. Cosmic de is pretty cool though

    While I love the way GNOME looks, I can't even change the default terminal emulator to open when using the open in terminal option. They have some serious issues in customization. But it will take a while to get used to KDE, so I just keep frustrated and keep using it. I hope COSMIC is great and fixes my issues with GNOME

    Can you please search for apps in the store and show the response time? Searching in the store has always been terribly slow in the store for me.

      Search results are generated in realtime as you type. It can search the entire database within milliseconds.

    GUI consistency is abysmal.. Look at the X button in Settings vs. Terminal.. Same goes for their header bar. Standing on the Gnome's shoulders for a GUI + WM is likely to always yield such inconsistencies.

      He opened the old settings app which is a gtk app. The new cosmic settings has a consistent theme.

    Sadly.. i've never been a fan of this sort of UI and layout.. i like a more traditional UI... a kin to classic windows like windows 95 and 98 and XP... i think that's why i keep using Mint..
    It's just easier to find my way around.

On Microsoft's blog, read "We need a safer systems programming language" from 2019. As well as the US CISA's "The Urgent Need for Memory Safety in Software Products" from 2023. Collectively, 70% of vulnerabilities are the direct result of usage of C and C++, and are resolved through Rust's memory safety features. Vulnerabilities not only represent a surface area for attack, but cause software crashes and instability.

    Eh... it looks like GNOME... and GNOME is one of the only desktop environments I actually f*ckin' hate. The tiling window management seems pretty good for a mainstream-type desktop, but for real power I'm sure it will never match a real tiling window manager.
    I can't complain about having another choice of desktop environment, although that doesn't stop me but wonder: why? What's the point of this? It's juft a new GNOME written in Rust. I have no interest in this, nor did I ever have any interest in Pop!_OS, so this is a solid pass for me.
    If I were to sum up my thoughts in two words, they would be "who cares?"

      I'm sure it'll deviate from gnome much more as time goes by. They need to get the core functionality in place and get a release out first.

      Gnome is dead, son. It was cursed by a supernatural shaman... they got no money anymore... Cosmic replaces not only Gnome but also its devs. System76 needs a solid foundation for its pre build computers that they sell. I guess at some point they might also sell gaming rigs and move to Arch like Valve did for Steam Deck. Perhaps Valve will also use Cosmic for Steam OS. Cosmic is already being used for NixOS and some other distro.

      As an i3 user who has played with cosmic I would say it's an extremely competent tiling wm.. maybe even more so because it is also just as mouse friendly as it is keyboard friendly. It might look like gnome to you initially but functionality-wise is it not. Its like i3 but with the conviences a full desktop environment brings.
